Ur-94 Emohydra: Multimodal Emotion Classification Using Heterogenous Modality Fusion, William A Stigall

C-Day Computing Showcase

Affective computing is a field of growing importance, as human society becomes more integrated with machines. Human feelings are both complex and multi-modal, expressed through various methods and nuances in behavior. In this work we introduce EmoHydra, a multi-modal model created through the fusion of three top-level models fine-tuned on text, vision, and speech respectively. Despite heterogenous heads performing well on the unseen data, as well as generalizing well to other benchmarks, logit concatenation proves to be ineffective at predicting Multimodal data, therefore we implement Multi-Head Attention as our fusion mechanism.

Optimal Molecular Dynamics System Size For Increased Precision And Efficiency For Epoxy Materials, Khatereh Kashmari, Sagar Patil, Josh Kemppainen, Shankara Gowtham, Gregory Odegard

Michigan Tech Publications

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is an important tool for predicting thermo-mechanical properties of polymer resins at the nanometer length scale, which is particularly important for efficient computationally driven design of advanced composite materials and structures. Because of the statistical nature of modeling amorphous materials on the nanometer length scale, multiple MD models (replicates) are typically built and simulated for statistical sampling of predicted properties. Larger replicates generally provide higher precision in the predictions but result in higher simulation times. Unfortunately, there is insufficient information in the literature to establish guidelines between MD model size and the resulting precision in predicted …

Optimizing Keyboard Layouts For English Text, David Sommerfield Apr 2024

Optimizing Keyboard Layouts For English Text, David Sommerfield

Research & Creative Achievement Day

QWERTY has been the de facto layout for English text input since its invention in 1874. Its continued usage has led to concerns about its ergonomic shortcomings. Previous attempts at layout creation have usually relied on manual observations of typing data rather than a predictive model. To address this issue, we propose a methodology that incorporates both corpus data from 22 million English websites and 8,228 hours of real-world typing data from participants. The corpus data is processed into bigrams and their number of occurrences. The typing data is preprocessed to exclude user-made typos, and then each bigram is tabulated …

Artificial General Intelligence And The Mind-Body Problem: Exploring The Computability Of Simulated Human Intelligence In Light Of The Immaterial Mind, Caleb Parks Apr 2024

Artificial General Intelligence And The Mind-Body Problem: Exploring The Computability Of Simulated Human Intelligence In Light Of The Immaterial Mind, Caleb Parks

Senior Honors Theses

In this thesis I explore whether achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI) through simulating the human brain is theoretically possible. Because of the scientific community’s predominantly physicalist outlook on the mind-body problem, AGI research may be limited by erroneous foundational presuppositions. Arguments from linguistics and mathematics demonstrate that the human intellect is partially immaterial, opening the door for novel analysis of the mind’s simulability. I categorize mind-body problem philosophies in a manner relevant to computer science based upon state transitions, and determine their ramifications on mind-simulation. Finally, I demonstrate how classical architectures cannot resolve so-called Gödel statements, discuss why this inability …
