Macrohft : Memory Augmented Context-Aware Reinforcement Learning On High Frequency Trading, Chuqiao Zong, Chaojie Wang, Molei Qin, Lei Feng, Xinrun Wang, Xinrun Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

High-frequency trading (HFT) that executes algorithmic trading in short time scales, has recently occupied the majority of cryptocurrency market. Besides traditional quantitative trading methods, reinforcement learning (RL) has become another appealing approach for HFT due to its terrific ability of handling high-dimensional financial data and solving sophisticated sequential decision-making problems, e.g., hierarchical reinforcement learning (HRL) has shown its promising performance on second-level HFT by training a router to select only one sub-agent from the agent pool to execute the current transaction. However, existing RL methods for HFT still have some defects: 1) standard RL-based trading agents suffer from the overfitting …

Reinforcement Tuning For Detecting Stances And Debunking Rumors Jointly With Large Language Models, Ruichao Yang, Wei Gao, Jing Ma, Hongzhan Ling, Bo Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning multi-task models for jointly detecting stance and verifying rumors poses challenges due to the need for training data of stance at post level and rumor veracity at claim level, which are difficult to obtain. To address this issue, we leverage large language models (LLMs) as the foundation annotators for the joint stance detection (SD) and rumor verification (RV) tasks, dubbed as JSDRV. We introduce a novel reinforcement tuning framework to enhance the joint predictive capabilities of LLM-based SD and RV components. Specifically, we devise a policy for selecting LLM-annotated data at the two levels, employing a hybrid reward mechanism …

Reinforcement Nash Equilibrium Solver, Xinrun Wang, Chang Yang, Shuxin Li, Pengdeng Li, Xiao Huang, Hau Chan, Bo An

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Nash Equilibrium (NE) is the canonical solution concept of game theory, which provides an elegant tool to understand the rationalities. Though mixed strategy NE exists in any game with finite players and actions, computing NE in two- or multi-player general-sum games is PPAD-Complete. Various alternative solutions, e.g., Correlated Equilibrium (CE), and learning methods, e.g., fictitious play (FP), are proposed to approximate NE. For convenience, we call these methods as "inexact solvers", or "solvers" for short. However, the alternative solutions differ from NE and the learning methods generally fail to converge to NE. Therefore, in this work, we propose REinforcement Nash …

How To Avoid Jumping To Conclusions: Measuring The Robustness Of Outstanding Facts In Knowledge Graphs, Hanhua Xiao, Yuchen Li, Yanhao Wang, Panagiotis Karras, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Natalia Rozalia Avlona

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An outstanding fact (OF) is a striking claim by which some entities stand out from their peers on someattribute. OFs serve data journalism, fact checking, and recommendation. However, one could jump to conclusions by selecting truthful OFs while intentionally or inadvertently ignoring lateral contexts and data that render them less striking. This jumping conclusion bias from unstable OFs may disorient the public, including voters and consumers, raising concerns about fairness and transparency in political and business competition. It is thus ethically imperative for several stakeholders to measure the robustness of OFs with respect to lateral contexts and data. Unfortunately, a …

Heterogeneous Graph Transformer With Poly-Tokenization, Zhiyuan Lu, Yuan Fang, Cheng Yang, Chuan Shi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graph neural networks have shown widespread success for learning on graphs, but they still face fundamental drawbacks, such as limited expressive power, over-smoothing, and over-squashing. Meanwhile, the transformer architecture offers a potential solution to these issues. However, existing graph transformers primarily cater to homogeneous graphs and are unable to model the intricate semantics of heterogeneous graphs. Moreover, unlike small molecular graphs where the entire graph can be considered as the receptive field in graph transformers, real-world heterogeneous graphs comprise a significantly larger number of nodes and cannot be entirely treated as such. Consequently, existing graph transformers struggle to capture the …

Robust Asynchronous Federated Learning With Time-Weighted And Stale Model Aggregation, Yinbin Miao, Ziteng Liu, Xinghua Li, Meng Li, Hongwei Li, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Federated Learning (FL) ensures collaborative learning among multiple clients while maintaining data locally. However, the traditional synchronous FL solutions have lower accuracy and require more communication time in scenarios where most devices drop out during learning. Therefore, we propose an Asynchronous Federated Learning (AsyFL) scheme using time-weighted and stale model aggregation, which effectively solves the problem of poor model performance due to the heterogeneity of devices. Then, we integrate Symmetric Homomorphic Encryption (SHE) into AsyFL to propose Asynchronous Privacy-Preserving Federated Learning (Asy-PPFL), which protects the privacy of clients and achieves lightweight computing. Privacy analysis shows that Asy-PPFL is indistinguishable under …

Establishing The Importance Of Co-Creation And Self-Efficacy In Creative Collaboration With Artificial Intelligence, Jack Mcguire, David De Cremer, Tim Van De Cruys

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The emergence of generative AI technologies has led to an increasing number of people collaborating with AI to produce creative works. Across two experimental studies, in which we carefully designed and programmed state-of-the-art human–AI interfaces, we examine how the design of generative AI systems influences human creativity (poetry writing). First, we find that people were most creative when writing a poem on their own, compared to first receiving a poem generated by an AI system and using sophisticated tools to edit it (Study 1). Following this, we demonstrate that this creativity deficit dissipates when people co-create with—not edit—AI and establish …

Gradient Wild Bootstrap For Instrumental Variable Quantile Regressions With Weak And Few Clusters, Wenjie Wang, Yichong Zhang Aug 2024

Gradient Wild Bootstrap For Instrumental Variable Quantile Regressions With Weak And Few Clusters, Wenjie Wang, Yichong Zhang

Research Collection School Of Economics

We study the gradient wild bootstrap-based inference for instrumental variable quantile regressions in the framework of a small number of large clusters in which the number of clusters is viewed as fixed, and the number of observations for each cluster diverges to infinity. For the Wald inference, we show that our wild bootstrap Wald test, with or without studentization using the cluster-robust covariance estimator (CRVE), controls size asymptotically up to a small error as long as the parameter of endogenous variable is strongly identified in at least one of the clusters. We further show that the wild bootstrap Wald test …

Projection-Domain Low-Count Quantitative Spect (Lc-Qspect) Methods For Radiopharmaceutical Therapies (Rpts), Zekun Li

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Radiopharmaceutical therapies (RPTs) using α- or β-particle-emitting isotopes are becoming increasingly important in cancer treatment. Reliable (accurate and precise) quantification of absorbed doses in lesions and vital organs is important for the safety and effectiveness of these therapies. Quantitative single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) provides a mechanism for such dose quantifications by quantifying the regional activity uptake. This dissertation aims to develop methodologies for reliable SPECT-based regional uptake quantification for patients treated with α-particle-emitting RPTs (α-RPTs). A significant challenge with conventional reconstruction-based quantitative (RBQ) SPECT methods is the ill-posed nature of image reconstruction, which is further complicated by the limited …

Topic Modeling On Document Networks With Dirichlet Optimal Transport Barycenter, Ce Zhang, Hady Wirawan Lauw Aug 2024

Topic Modeling On Document Networks With Dirichlet Optimal Transport Barycenter, Ce Zhang, Hady Wirawan Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Text documents are often interconnected in a network structure, e.g., academic papers via citations, Web pages via hyperlinks. On the one hand, though Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have shown promising ability to derive effective embeddings for such networked documents, they do not assume a latent topic structure and result in uninterpretable embeddings. On the other hand, topic models can infer semantically interpretable topic distributions for documents by associating each topic with a group of understandable key words. However, most topic models mainly focus on plain text within documents and fail to leverage network structure across documents. Network connectivity reveals topic …

Water droplet behavior on soil surfaces plays a critical role in numerous environmental processes, including soil erosion, hydrological dynamics, and ecosystem health. Accurate characterization of soil water repellency, quantified by parameters such as water droplet penetration time (WDPT) and contact angles (WDCA), is essential for informed decision-making in agricultural management, forestry practices, and land-use planning. Despite the significance of these parameters, challenges exist in reliably estimating them due to the complex and dynamic nature of soil-water interactions. This thesis address challenges in estimating WDPT and WDCA, by leveraging state-of-the-art image processing techniques and machine learning algorithms. The research focuses on …

Scoring Single-Sample Pathway Expression Level Using Graph Autoencoder, Eunyoung Jang Aug 2024

Scoring Single-Sample Pathway Expression Level Using Graph Autoencoder, Eunyoung Jang

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Single-sample pathway analysis (ssPA) is a bioinformatics technique used to assess the activity of biological pathways in individual samples, rather than relying on aggregated data from multiple samples. This approach allows for the detection of pathway activation or suppression in single samples, making it a valuable approach in research and clinical applications where individual variability is critical. In this paper, we propose a deep-learning method that scores individual pathway expression levels using a graph autoencoder. The proposed method provides insights into the biological processes and leverages the high dimensionality of gene expression data by setting the nodes in the neural …

Mining Gambling Data For Modeling Gambling Behavior Patterns, Piyush Aniruddha Puranik

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Understanding player behavior for responsible gambling research is a difficult task due to the lack of data on players’ activities. Past studies in this area are largely limited to publicly available behavioral data or aggregated players data. Problem gambling in gamblers is typically identified only after they have already been addicted or have already been engaging in problematic gambling behavior. Furthermore, “risky” gambling behavior has historically been difficult to define due to the varying patterns of gambling activity that could potentially be attributed to it.In this dissertation we illustrate the methodology and algorithms used to engineer financial data for further …

Interpretable Tensor Fusion, Saurabh Varshneya, Antoine Ledent, Philipp Liznerski, Andriy Balinskyy, Purvanshi Mehta, Waleed Mustafa, Marius Kloft

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Conventional machine learning methods are predominantly designed to predict outcomes based on a single data type. However, practical applications may encompass data of diverse types, such as text, images, and audio. We introduce interpretable tensor fusion (InTense), a multimodal learning method training a neural network to simultaneously learn multiple data representations and their interpretable fusion. InTense can separately capture both linear combinations and multiplicative interactions of the data types, thereby disentangling higher-order interactions from the individual effects of each modality. InTense provides interpretability out of the box by assigning relevance scores to modalities and their associations, respectively. The approach is …

Solving Long-Run Average Reward Robust Mdps Via Stochastic Games, Krishnendu Chatterjee, Ehsan Kafshdar Goharshady, Mehrdad Karrabi, Petr Novotný, Dorde Zikelic

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Markov decision processes (MDPs) provide a standard framework for sequential decision making under uncertainty. However, MDPs do not take uncertainty in transition probabilities into account. Robust Markov decision processes (RMDPs) address this shortcoming of MDPs by assigning to each transition an uncertainty set rather than a single probability value. In this work, we consider polytopic RMDPs in which all uncertainty sets are polytopes and study the problem of solving long-run average reward polytopic RMDPs. We present a novel perspective on this problem and show that it can be reduced to solving long-run average reward turn-based stochastic games with finite state …
