Winning Back The Cup For Distributed Pomdps: Planning Over Continuous Belief Spaces, Pradeep Varakantham, Ranjit Nair, Milind Tambe, Makoto Yokoo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Distributed Partially Observable Markov Decision Problems (Distributed POMDPs) are evolving as a popular approach for modeling multiagent systems, and many different algorithms have been proposed to obtain locally or globally optimal policies. Unfortunately, most of these algorithms have either been explicitly designed or experimentally evaluated assuming knowledge of a starting belief point, an assumption that often does not hold in complex, uncertain domains. Instead, in such domains, it is important for agents to explicitly plan over continuous belief spaces. This paper provides a novel algorithm to explicitly compute finite horizon policies over continuous belief spaces, without restricting the space of …

Osprey: A Practical Type System For Validating Dimensional Unit Correctness Of C Programs, Lingxiao Jiang, Zhendong Su May 2006

Osprey: A Practical Type System For Validating Dimensional Unit Correctness Of C Programs, Lingxiao Jiang, Zhendong Su

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Misuse of measurement units is a common source of errors in scientific applications, but standard type systems do not prevent such errors. Dimensional analysis in physics can be used to manually detect such errors in physical equations. It is, however, not feasible to perform such manual analysis for programs computing physical equations because of code complexity. In this paper, we present a type system to automatically detect potential errors involving measurement units. It is constraint-based: we model units as types and flow of units as constraints. However, standard type checking algorithms are not powerful enough to handle units because of …

Discovering Causal Dependencies In Mobile Context-Aware Recommenders, Ghim-Eng Yap, Ah-Hwee Tan, Hwee Hwa Pang May 2006

Discovering Causal Dependencies In Mobile Context-Aware Recommenders, Ghim-Eng Yap, Ah-Hwee Tan, Hwee Hwa Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mobile context-aware recommender systems face unique challenges in acquiring context. Resource limitations make minimizing context acquisition a practical need, while the uncertainty inherent to the mobile environment makes missing context values a major concern. This paper introduces a scalable mechanism based on Bayesian network learning in a tiered context model to overcome both of these challenges. Extensive experiments on a restaurant recommender system showed that our mechanism can accurately discover causal dependencies among context, thereby enabling the effective identification of the minimal set of important context for a specific user and task, as well as providing highly accurate recommendations even …

Time-Dependent Semantic Similarity Measure Of Queries Using Historical Click-Through Data, Qiankun Zhao, Steven C. H. Hoi, Tie-Yan Liu, Sourav S. Bhowmick, Michael R. Lyu, Wei-Ying Ma May 2006

Time-Dependent Semantic Similarity Measure Of Queries Using Historical Click-Through Data, Qiankun Zhao, Steven C. H. Hoi, Tie-Yan Liu, Sourav S. Bhowmick, Michael R. Lyu, Wei-Ying Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

It has become a promising direction to measure similarity of Web search queries by mining the increasing amount of click-through data logged by Web search engines, which record the interactions between users and the search engines. Most existing approaches employ the click-through data for similarity measure of queries with little consideration of the temporal factor, while the click-through data is often dynamic and contains rich temporal information. In this paper we present a new framework of time-dependent query semantic similarity model on exploiting the temporal characteristics of historical click-through data. The intuition is that more accurate semantic similarity values between …

Design And Implementation Of A Web-Based Lead Management System Using Oracle And Coldfusion Technologies, James Darschewski

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

In business a key to being successful is being able to identify who your customers are and evaluating their needs. Most businesses are not only comprised of a single customer; therefore, there is a need to retain customer information and to track the customer from initial contact to the point of sale. While there are numerous off the shelf products that can store customer data, often times they do not easily allow for modifications and many of these products would require some sort of wide area network (WAN), which could incur extensive costs, in order for highly distributed sales people …

Development Of An Automated And Integrated Budgeting System, Sarah E. Bury Apr 2006

Development Of An Automated And Integrated Budgeting System, Sarah E. Bury

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Alpine Health currently uses Microsoft Excel to produce consolidated budget statements each year. These Excel templates have become extremely cumbersome to the accounting department since they must cut and paste all of the templates (over 20) into a "master" schedule that consolidates the reports into a view that the executives make decisions from. Often times these templates are too large to email back and forth. They are hard to track since several versions of the same budget are sent during the process. Each time a new entity or hospital is added, the accounting department must update several different tabs on …

No Free Lunch, Bayesian Inference, And Utility: A Decision-Theoretic Approach To Optimization, Christopher Kenneth Monson Apr 2006

No Free Lunch, Bayesian Inference, And Utility: A Decision-Theoretic Approach To Optimization, Christopher Kenneth Monson

Theses and Dissertations

Existing approaches to continuous optimization are essentially mechanisms for deciding which locations should be sampled in order to obtain information about a target function's global optimum. These methods, while often effective in particular domains, generally base their decisions on heuristics developed in consideration of ill-defined desiderata rather than on explicitly defined goals or models of the available information that may be used to achieve them. The problem of numerical optimization is essentially one of deciding what information to gather, then using that information to infer the location of the global optimum. That being the case, it makes sense to model …

Twenty-First Century Ticketing, Ron E. Hamilton Apr 2006

Twenty-First Century Ticketing, Ron E. Hamilton

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

There has been a dramatic increase in show ticket sales on the Internet from 1999 to 2006. This shift has enabled box offices to step away from traditional means of distribution. In many cases, the ticketing system was tied to distribution. If a box office wanted to change ticketing systems, they would lose their distribution channels. Increased Internet sales have fueled the rise of independent ticket sellers as well as new ticketing software companies. AnyShowTicket.com is a ticket broker that has captured the market for selling show tickets for third-party venues in its city. They handle Internet and call center …

Clustering Of Database Query Results, Kristine Jean Daniels Apr 2006

Clustering Of Database Query Results, Kristine Jean Daniels

Theses and Dissertations

Increasingly more users are accessing database systems for interactive and exploratory data retrieval. While performing searches on these systems, users are required to use broad queries to get their desired results. Broad queries often result in too many items forcing the user to spend unnecessary time sifting through these items to find the relevant results. This problem, of finding a desired data item within many items, is referred to as "information overload". Most users experience information overload when viewing these database query results. This thesis shows that users information overload can be reduced by clustering database query results. …

Mediated Identification, D T. Shaw

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

Identity and identification are linked by variable meanings and applications and are essential in many remote transactions. Identification relying on mediation or third party intervention may be modified or withdrawn at will. Creating or reestablishing identity may require time and resources including artefacts such as the identity card usually sourced from a third party. The characteristics of the identification process and artefacts are discussed and the requirements of usermediated identification artefacts are explored. The implicit link between user identity and artefact identity may be broken under certain circumstances.

Axiomatic Multi-Transport Bargaining: A Quantitative Method For Dynamic Transport Selection In Heterogeneous Multi-Transport Wireless Environments, Qiuyi Duan, Michael A. Goodrich, Charles D. Knutson, Lei Wang

Faculty Publications

Transport selection mechanisms are designed to facilitate seamless connectivity in heterogeneous multi-transport environments, allowing access to the “best” available transport according to user requirements. Evaluating transport configurations dynamically according to the user’s preferences and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements is a challenging task. This paper describes a quantitative approach that applies the Utility Theorem and Nash’s Bargaining solution to heterogeneous wireless environments. The mathematical model presented generates and adjusts the transport preference list dynamically depending on the degree to which a transport satisfies user preferences and the application’s QoS requirements. We incorporate a negotiation engine using the Axiomatic Multi-Transport Bargaining …
