Learning Causal Models For Noisy Biological Data Mining: An Application To Ovarian Cancer Detection, Ghim-Eng Yap, Ah-Hwee Tan, Hwee Hwa Pang Jul 2007

Learning Causal Models For Noisy Biological Data Mining: An Application To Ovarian Cancer Detection, Ghim-Eng Yap, Ah-Hwee Tan, Hwee Hwa Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Undetected errors in the expression measurements from highthroughput DNA microarrays and protein spectroscopy could seriously affect the diagnostic reliability in disease detection. In addition to a high resilience against such errors, diagnostic models need to be more comprehensible so that a deeper understanding of the causal interactions among biological entities like genes and proteins may be possible. In this paper, we introduce a robust knowledge discovery approach that addresses these challenges. First, the causal interactions among the genes and proteins in the noisy expression data are discovered automatically through Bayesian network learning. Then, the diagnosis of a disease based on …

The Business Model Of "Software-As-A-Service", Dan Ma Jul 2007

The Business Model Of "Software-As-A-Service", Dan Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The emergence of the software-as-a-service (SaaS) business model has attracted great attentions from both researchers and practitioners. SaaS vendors deliver on-demand information processing services to users, and thus offer computing utility rather than the standalone software itself. In this work, the author propose an analytical model to study the competition between the SaaS and the traditional COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) solutions for software applications. The author show that when software applications become open, modulated, and standardized, the SaaS business model will take a significant market share. In addition, under certain market conditions, offering users an easy exit option through the software …

Improving Memory-Based Collaborative Filtering Using A Factor-Based Approach, Zhenxue Zhang, Dongsong Zhang, Zhiling Guo Jul 2007

Improving Memory-Based Collaborative Filtering Using A Factor-Based Approach, Zhenxue Zhang, Dongsong Zhang, Zhiling Guo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Collaborative Filtering (CF) systems generate recommendations for a user by aggregating item ratings of other like-minded users. The memory-based approach is a common technique used in CF. This approach first uses statistical methods such as Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient to measure user similarities based on their previous ratings on different items. Users will then be grouped into different neighborhood depending on the calculated similarities. Finally, the system will generate predictions on how a user would rate a specific item by aggregating ratings on the item cast by the identified neighbors of his/her. However, current memory-based CF method only measures user similarities …

An Empirical Study On Large-Scale Content-Based Image Retrieval, Yuk Man Wong, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu Jul 2007

An Empirical Study On Large-Scale Content-Based Image Retrieval, Yuk Man Wong, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

One key challenge in content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is to develop a fast solution for indexing high-dimensional image contents, which is crucial to building large-scale CBIR systems. In this paper, we propose a scalable content-based image retrieval scheme using locality-sensitive hashing (LSH), and conduct extensive evaluations on a large image testbed of a half million images. To the best of our knowledge, there is less comprehensive study on large-scale CBIR evaluation with a half million images. Our empirical results show that our proposed solution is able to scale for hundreds of thousands of images, which is promising for building Web-scale …

Conceptual Xml For Systems Analysis, Reema Al-Kamha Jun 2007

Conceptual Xml For Systems Analysis, Reema Al-Kamha

Theses and Dissertations

Because XML has become a new standard for data representation, there is a need for a simple conceptual model that works well with XML-based development. In this research we present a conceptual model for XML, called C-XML, which meets this new need of systems analysts who store their data using XML. We describe our implementation of an automatic conversion from XML Schema to C-XML that preserves information and constraints. With this conversion, we can view an XML Schema instance graphically at a higher level of abstraction. We also describe our implementation of an automatic conversion from C-XML to XML Schema. …

Intelligent Rotoscoping: A Semi-Automated Interactive Boundary Tracking Approach To Video Segmentation, Seth R. Holladay Jun 2007

Intelligent Rotoscoping: A Semi-Automated Interactive Boundary Tracking Approach To Video Segmentation, Seth R. Holladay

Theses and Dissertations

Video segmentation is an application of computer vision aimed at automating the extraction of an object from a series of video frames. However, it is a difficult problem, especially to compute at real-time, interactive rates. Although general application to video is difficult because of the wide range of image scenarios, user interaction can help to reduce the problem space and speed up the computation. This thesis presents a fast object-tracking tool that selects an object from a series of frames based on minimal user input. Our Intelligent Rotoscoping tool aims for increased speed and accuracy over other video segmentation tools, …

Finding Termination And Time Improvement In Predicate Abstraction With Under-Approximation And Abstract Matching, Dritan Kudra Jun 2007

Finding Termination And Time Improvement In Predicate Abstraction With Under-Approximation And Abstract Matching, Dritan Kudra

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of current formal verification methods is mitigating the state explosion problem. One of these formal methods is predicate abstraction, which reduces concrete states of a system to bitvectors of true/false valuations of a set of predicates. Predicate abstraction comes in two flavors, over-approximation and under-approximation. A drawback of over-approximation is that it produces too many spurious errors for data-intensive applications. A more recent under-approximation technique which does not produce spurious errors, does abstract matching on concrete states (AMCS). AMCS adds behaviors to an abstract system by augmenting the set of initial predicates, making use of a theorem prover. …

Cognitive And Behavioral Model Ensembles For Autonomous Virtual Characters, Jeffrey S. Whiting Jun 2007

Cognitive And Behavioral Model Ensembles For Autonomous Virtual Characters, Jeffrey S. Whiting

Theses and Dissertations

Cognitive and behavioral models have become popular methods to create autonomous self-animating characters. Creating these models presents the following challenges: (1) Creating a cognitive or behavioral model is a time intensive and complex process that must be done by an expert programmer (2) The models are created to solve a specific problem in a given environment and because of their specific nature cannot be easily reused. Combining existing models together would allow an animator, without the need of a programmer, to create new characters in less time and would be able to leverage each model's strengths to increase the character's …

Vision-Based Control And Flight Optimization Of A Rotorcraft Uav, David Christian Hubbard Jun 2007

Vision-Based Control And Flight Optimization Of A Rotorcraft Uav, David Christian Hubbard

Theses and Dissertations

A Rotorcraft UAV provides an ideal experimental platform for vision-based navigation. This thesis describes the flight tests of the US Army PALACE pro ject, which implements Moravec's pseudo-normalized correlation tracking algorithm. The tracker uses the movement of the landing site in the camera, a laser range, and the aircraft attitude from an IMU to estimate the relative motion of the UAV. The position estimate functions as a GPS equivalent to enable the rotorcraft to maneuver without the aid of GPS. Flight tests were performed with obstacles and over concrete, asphalt, and grass in daylight conditions with a safe landing area …

Session 2 - Societal-Consciousness In The Computing Curricula: A Time For Serious Introspection, Daniel Moix, Srini Ramaswamy

International Symposium on Technology and Society

This paper addresses the growing need for inculcating appropriate ethics within the computing curriculum by fostering the development of a societally-conscious ethical framework among our students to address the use of information technology vis-à-vis government, business and society. We propose a new integrated model based approach (IDEA) and suggest its adoption to encourage students on reflecting upon the social and ethical ramifications of technology, beyond the narrow, project focused tunnel vision that currently (subliminally) exists in many computing curricula, and in particular, in today’s profit-focused, consulting and contract-based software industry.

Rules And Insights: Connecting The Mathematical And Linguistic Abilities Of C.S. Lewis, Kim Jongerius Jun 2007

Rules And Insights: Connecting The Mathematical And Linguistic Abilities Of C.S. Lewis, Kim Jongerius

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2007

While most biographical works on C.S. Lewis give passing reference to Lewis' problems with elementary mathematics, few have made an attempt at diagnosing the difficulty or exploring its impact on his writing. A careful study of family correspondence, however, makes it clear that his learning difficulties were not with mathematics alone and suggests connections between attitudes toward and abilities in both mathematics and language. This paper will make these connections clear and will illustrate their ties to Lewis' effective mathematical references.

Acquisition Of Owl Dl Axioms From Lexical Resources, Johanna Volker, Pascal Hitzler, Philipp Cimiano

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

State-of-the-art research on automated learning of ontologies from text currently focuses on inexpressive ontologies. The acquisition of complex axioms involving logical connectives, role restrictions, and other expressive features of the Web Ontology Language OWL remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we present a method and implementation for enriching inexpressive OWL ontologies with expressive axioms which is based on a deep syntactic analysis of natural language definitions. We argue that it can serve as a core for a semi-automatic ontology engineering process supported by a methodology that integrates methods for both ontology learning and evaluation. The feasibility of our approach is …

The Impact Of Cultural And Religious Values On Adoption Of Innovation, Angela Hausman, Morris Kalliny Jun 2007

Although managing the adoption of innovations domestically can be frustrating, the complexity of the issue increases tremendously when companies take a global approach to marketing. Differences in cultural and religious values can have a great impact on the process of innovation adoption. This study investigates the role of these cultural and religious values, specifically, collectivism/individualism/, uncertainty avoidance and power distance. a conceptual model is presented to illustrate the relationship between cultural/religious values and adoption of innovation.

Instance Weighting For Domain Adaptation In Nlp, Jing Jiang, Chengxiang Zhai Jun 2007

Instance Weighting For Domain Adaptation In Nlp, Jing Jiang, Chengxiang Zhai

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Domain adaptation is an important problem in natural language processing (NLP) due to the lack of labeled data in novel domains. In this paper, we study the domain adaptation problem from the instance weighting per- spective. We formally analyze and charac- terize the domain adaptation problem from a distributional view, and show that there are two distinct needs for adaptation, cor- responding to the different distributions of instances and classification functions in the source and the target domains. We then propose a general instance weighting frame- work for domain adaptation. Our empir- ical results on three NLP tasks show that …

A Multi-Scale Tikhonov Regularization Scheme For Implicit Surface Modeling, Jianke Zhu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu Jun 2007

A Multi-Scale Tikhonov Regularization Scheme For Implicit Surface Modeling, Jianke Zhu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Kernel machines have recently been considered as a promising solution for implicit surface modelling. A key challenge of machine learning solutions is how to fit implicit shape models from large-scale sets of point cloud samples efficiently. In this paper, we propose a fast solution for approximating implicit surfaces based on a multi-scale Tikhonov regularization scheme. The optimization of our scheme is formulated into a sparse linear equation system, which can be efficiently solved by factorization methods. Different from traditional approaches, our scheme does not employ auxiliary off-surface points, which not only saves the computational cost but also avoids the problem …

Similarity Beyond Distance Measurement, Feng Kang, Rong Jin, Steven C. H. Hoi Jun 2007

Similarity Beyond Distance Measurement, Feng Kang, Rong Jin, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

One of the keys issues to content-based image retrieval is the similarity measurement of images. Images are represented as points in the space of low-level visual features and most similarity measures are based on certain distance measurement between these features. Given a distance metric, two images with shorter distance are deemed to more similar than images that are far away. The well-known problem with these similarity measures is the semantic gap, namely two images separated by large distance could share the same semantic content. In this paper, we propose a novel similarity measure of images that goes beyond the distance …

Usage-Based Versus Flat Pricing For E-Business Services With Differentiated Qos, Zhen Liu, Laura Wynter, Cathy Xia Jun 2007

Usage-Based Versus Flat Pricing For E-Business Services With Differentiated Qos, Zhen Liu, Laura Wynter, Cathy Xia

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Design of e-commerce services that are competitive, in such a quickly responding market, requires the analyses of prices and price structures. We present a general model of an e-commerce market that allows us to analyze optimal price structures, both flat and usage-based. Based on the price structure of a major web hosting provider, we consider both single-tier and two-tier (burst-rate) pricing, and our result suggests that the more complex two-tier structure may not be worth the marketing effort, as the firm?s equilibrium profits will not increase through the use of this structure. An essential feature of our approach is that …

Customers face random demand, and each DC maintains a certain amount of safety stock in order to achieve a certain service level for the customers it serves. The objective is to minimize the total previous termcostnext term that includes previous termlocation costs and inventory costsnext term at the DCs, and distribution previous termcostsnext term in the supply chain. We show that this problem can be formulated as a nonlinear integer programming previous termmodel, next term for …

Survey Of Supercomputer Cluster Security Issues, George Markowsky, Linda Markowsky Jun 2007

Survey Of Supercomputer Cluster Security Issues, George Markowsky, Linda Markowsky

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The authors believe that providing security for supercomputer clusters is different from providing security for stand-alone PCs. The types of programs that supercomputer clusters run and the sort of data available on supercomputer clusters are fundamentally different from the programs and data found on stand-alone PCs. This situation might attract a different type of attacker with different goals and different tactics. This paper discusses the results of a questionnaire sent out to many supercomputer clusters in the United States and relates them to a literature search that was also undertaken. These results suggest approaches that can be taken to further …

Factors Affecting Website Reconstruction From The Web Infrastructure, Frank Mccown, Norou Diawara, Michael L. Nelson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

When a website is suddenly lost without a backup, it may be reconstituted by probing web archives and search engine caches for missing content. In this paper we describe an experiment where we crawled and reconstructed 300 randomly selected websites on a weekly basis for 14 weeks. The reconstructions were performed using our web-repository crawler named Warrick which recovers missing resources from the Web Infrastructure (WI), the collective preservation effort of web archives and search engine caches. We examine several characteristics of the websites over time including birth rate, decay and age of resources. We evaluate the reconstructions when compared …

Continuous Nearest Neighbor Queries Over Sliding Windows, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Dimitris Papadias Jun 2007

Continuous Nearest Neighbor Queries Over Sliding Windows, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Dimitris Papadias

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent research has focused on continuous monitoring of nearest neighbors (NN) in highly dynamic scenarios, where the queries and the data objects move frequently and arbitrarily. All existing methods, however, assume the Euclidean distance metric. In this paper we study k-NN monitoring in road networks, where the distance between a query and a data object is determined by the length of the shortest path connecting them. We propose two methods that can handle arbitrary object and query moving patterns, as well as fluctuations of edge weights. The first one maintains the query results by processing only updates that may invalidate …

Simplifying Cyber Foraging For Mobile Devices, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Darren Gergle, Mahadev Satyanarayanan, James Herbsleb Jun 2007

Simplifying Cyber Foraging For Mobile Devices, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Darren Gergle, Mahadev Satyanarayanan, James Herbsleb

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cyber foraging is the transient and opportunistic use of compute servers by mobile devices. The short market life of such devices makes rapid modification of applications for remote execution an important problem. We describe a solution that combines a "little language" for cyber foraging with an adaptive runtime system. We report results from a user study showing that even novice developers are able to successfully modify large, unfamiliar applications in just a few hours. We also show that the quality of novice-modified and expert-modified applications are comparable in most cases.

Maximizing Broadcast And Multicast Traffic Load Through Link-Rate Diversity In Wireless Mesh Networks, Chun Tung Chou, Bao Hua Liu, Archan Misra Jun 2007

Maximizing Broadcast And Multicast Traffic Load Through Link-Rate Diversity In Wireless Mesh Networks, Chun Tung Chou, Bao Hua Liu, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper studies some of the fundamental challenges and opportunities associated with the network-layer broadcast and multicast in a multihop multirate wireless mesh network (WMN). In particular, we focus on exploiting the ability of nodes to perform link-layer broadcasts at different rates (with correspondingly different coverage areas). We first show how, in the broadcast wireless medium, the available capacity at a mesh node for a multicast transmission is not just a function of the aggregate pre-existing traffic load of other interfering nodes, but intricately coupled to the actual (sender, receiver) set and the link-layer rate of each individual transmission. We …
