So Far (Schematically) Yet So Near (Semantically), Amit P. Sheth, Vipul Kashyap
So Far (Schematically) Yet So Near (Semantically), Amit P. Sheth, Vipul Kashyap
Kno.e.sis Publications
In a multidatabase system, schematic conflicts between two objects are usually of interest only when the objects have some semantic affinity. In this paper we try to reconcile the two perspectives. We first define the concept of semantic proximity and provide a semantic taxonomy. We then enumerate and classify the schematic and data conflicts. We discuss possible semantic similarities between two objects that have various types of schematic and data conflicts. Issues of uncertain information and inconsistent information are also addressed.

On Matching Ann Structure To Problem Domain Structure, George G. Lendaris, Martin Zwick, Karl Mathia
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
To achieve reduced training time and improved generalization with artificial neural networks (ANN, or NN), it is important to use a reduced complexity NN structure. A "problem" is defined by constraints among the variables describing it. If knowledge about these constraints could be obtained a priori, this could be used to reduce the complexity of the ANN before training it. Systems theory literature contains methods for determining and representing structural aspects of constrained data (these methods are herein called GSM, general systems method). The suggestion here is to use the GSM model of the given data as a pattern for …

The objective of my research project was to write a computer program in Turbo Pascal which would determine how many general university requirements a student has completed and what requirements he or she needs to complete in order to graduate. There are six degrees offered at Illinois Wesleyan University. They are: BA (Bachelor of Arts); BS (Bachelor of Science); BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts); BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing); BM (Bachelor of Music) and BME (Bachelor of Music Education). There is a different set of criteria to be met for the completion of each of these degrees. The program …
Ensuring The Satisfaction Of A Temporal Specification At Run-Time, Grace Tsai, Matt Insall, Bruce M. Mcmillin
Ensuring The Satisfaction Of A Temporal Specification At Run-Time, Grace Tsai, Matt Insall, Bruce M. Mcmillin
Computer Science Technical Reports
This paper presents an approach to operationally evaluate a temporal specification in a distributed computing environment. First, an algorithm Compute History is proposed to allow every distributed processor to collect events executed by itself and by other processors, and to order the collected events by causality. This algorithm employs neither monitors nor a global clock to order collected events of a processor. These collected events of a processor form an execution history of a distributed computation, and they represent behaviors of all the processors during execution. Next, the semantics of operational evaluation of a temporal assertion is presented. The evaluation …
An Object Oriented Preemptive Multitasking Kernel, Lee Gene Shipman
An Object Oriented Preemptive Multitasking Kernel, Lee Gene Shipman
Masters Theses
“This paper describes a preemptive multitasking kernel designed and coded using C++ using an object oriented paradigm. The kernel design, while implemented on an Intel 80386 based IBM PC running MS-DOS 4.01, can be ported to any platform, rewriting only the low level, hardware specific code.
The kernel, in application framework form, enables the applications developer to create real-time multitasking applications. This can be done in a systematic way by capitalizing on the power of object oriented program development.
A simulation was created to verify the correctness of the kernel against a traditional non-multitasking approach. This simulation provides the proof …

Fortran 90d/Hpf Compiler For Distributed Memory Mimd Computers: Design, Implementation, And Performance Results, Zeki Bozkus, Alok Choudhary, Geoffrey C. Fox, Tomasz Haupt
Northeast Parallel Architecture Center
Fortran 90D/HPF is a data parallel language with special directives to enable users to specify data alignment and distributions. This paper describes the design and implementation of a Fortran90D/HPF compiler. Techniques for data and computation partitioning, communication detection and generation, and the run-time support for the compiler are discussed. Finally, initial performance results for the compiler are presented which show that the code produced by the compiler is portable, yet efficient. We believe that the methodology to process data distribution, computation partitioning, communication system design and the overall compiler design can be used by the implementors of HPF compilers.

A Compilation Approach For Fortran 90d/Hpf Compilers On Distributed Memory Mimd Computers, Zeki Bozkus, Alok Choudhary, Geoffrey C. Fox, Tomasz Haupt
Northeast Parallel Architecture Center
This paper describes a compilation approach for a Fortran 90D/HPF compiler, a source-to-source parallel compiler for distributed memory systems. Different from Fortran 77 parallelizing compilers, a Fortran90D/HPF compiler does not parallelize sequential constructs. Only parallelism expressed by Fortran 90D/HPF parallel constructs is exploited. The methodology of parallelizing Fortran programs such as computation partitioning, communication detection and generation, and the run-time support for the compiler are discussed. An example of Gaussian Elimination is used to illustrate the compilation techniques with performance results.

Integrating Multiple Programming Paradigms On Connection Machine Cm5 In A Dataflow-Based Software Environment, Gang Cheng, Geoffrey C. Fox, Kim Mills
Northeast Parallel Architecture Center
By viewing different parallel programming paradigms as essential heterogeneous approaches in mapping "real-world" problems to parallel systems, we discuss methodologies in integrating multiple programming models on a Connection Machine CM5. In a data flow based integration model built in a visualization software AVS, we demonstrate a simple, effective and modular way to couple sequential, data-parallel and explicit message-passing modules into an integrated programming environment on the CM5.

The Multicomputer Toolbox - First-Generation Scalable Libraries, Anthony Skjellum, Alvin Leung, Steven G. Smith, Robert D. Falgout
Northeast Parallel Architecture Center
"First-generation" scalable parallel libraries have been achieved, and are maturing, within the Multicomputer Toolbox. The Toolbox includes sparse, dense, iterative linear algebra, a stiff ODE/DAE solver, and an open software technology for additional numerical algorithms, plus an inter-architecture Makefile mechanism for building applications. We have devised C-based strategies for useful classes of distributed data structures, including distributed matrices and vectors. The underlying Zipcodemessage passing system has enabled process-grid abstractions of multicomputers, communication contexts, and process groups, all characteristics needed for building scalable libraries, and scalable application software. We describe the data-distribution-independent approach to building scalable libraries, which is needed so …
Hierarchical Tree-Structures As Adaptive Meshes, David J. Edelsohn
Hierarchical Tree-Structures As Adaptive Meshes, David J. Edelsohn
Northeast Parallel Architecture Center
Introduction: Two basic types of simulations exist for modeling systems of many particles: grid-based (point particles indirectly interacting with one another through the potential calculated from equivalent particle densities on a mesh) and particle-based (point particles directly interacting with a one another through potentials at their positions calculated from the other particles in the system). Grid-based solvers traditionally model continuum problems, such as fluid and gas systems, and mixed particle-continuum systems. Particle-based solvers find more use modeling discrete systems such as stars within galaxies or other rarefied gases. Many different physical systems, including electromagnetic interactions, gravitational interactions, and fluid vortex …

On Transactional Workflows, Amit P. Sheth, Marek Rusinkiewicz
Kno.e.sis Publications
The basic transaction model has evolved over time to incorporate more complex transactions structures and to take the advantage of semantics of higher-level operations that cannot be seen at the level of page reads and writes. Well known examples of such extended transaction models include nested and multi-level transactions. A number of relaxed transaction models have been defined in the last several years that permit a controlled relaxation of the transaction isolation and atomicity to better match the requirements of various database applications. Correctness criteria other than global serializability have also been proposed. Several examples of extended/relaxed transaction models are …
The Effect Of Subliminal Learning: Using A Direct Manipulation Computer Interface, Tammy P. Campbell
The Effect Of Subliminal Learning: Using A Direct Manipulation Computer Interface, Tammy P. Campbell
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research to determine what subliminal presentation accomplishes and its effects upon the learning process is very limited. The possibility of presenting subliminal information in a passive manner to reinforce the learning process and the possibility that this presentation can aid in the absorption of the information needed to learn is examined. A previous study examined this possibility using a text editor as the test instrument. In this thesis, a direct manipulation interface using a spreadsheet which visually presents tasks is examined to determine if this environment might be more effective with a learning medium using subliminal perception, then was the …

The Synthesis kernel [21,22,23,27,28] showed that dynamic code generation, software feedback, and fine-grain modular kernel organization are useful implementation techniques for improving the performance of operating system kernels. In addition, and perhaps more importantly, we discovered that there are strong interactions between the techniques. Hence, a careful and systematic combination of the techniques can be very powerful even though each one by itself may have serious limitations. By identifying these interactions we illustrate the problems of applying each technique in isolation to existing kernels. We also highlight the important common under-pinnings of the Synthesis experience and present our ideas on …

The world, or at least I, was all agog when touch screens arrived. My initial contact with touch screens was at a science exhibition in Menara MPPJ, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia in July 1987. That particular exhibit, which encouraged visitors to participate and to experiment with, was a graphic program. Visitors could use their fingers to select the drawing tool or the color they want (which is something like the tools on a MacDraw screen on a Macintosh) and use their fingers to move around the screen to draw anything they want. That added to my fascination with the world of …
The Dynamics Of Growth-Factor-Modified Immune-Response To Cancer Growth: One-Dimensional Models, J. A. Adam
The Dynamics Of Growth-Factor-Modified Immune-Response To Cancer Growth: One-Dimensional Models, J. A. Adam
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
By characterizing the effect of tumor growth factors as deviations from normal logistic-type growth rates, the spatio-temporal dynamics for a one-dimensional model of cancer growth incorporating immune response are studied. The growth rates considered are classified respectively as normal, activated, inhibited and delay activated. The homogeneous steady states are defined by relative extrema of a ''free energy'' function V(x) for each of the above four cases. This function is of particular importance in studying the coexistence of tumoral and cancer-free steady states, and in identifying the nature (progressive or regressive) of travelling wave solutions to the nonlinear partial differential equation …
Generating Tests For Delay Faults In Nonscan Circuits, Prathima Agrawal, Vishwani D. Agrawal, Sharad C. Seth
Generating Tests For Delay Faults In Nonscan Circuits, Prathima Agrawal, Vishwani D. Agrawal, Sharad C. Seth
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
This new method allows any sequential-circuit test generation program to produce path delay tests for nonscan circuits. To test a given path, the authors augment the netlist model of the circuit with a logic block in which testing for a certain single stuck-at fault is equivalent to testing for a path delay fault. The test sequence for the stuck-at fault performs all the necessary delay fault test functions: initialization, path activation, and fault propagation. The authors present results on benchmarks for nonscan and scan/hold modes of testing.

Alternating horizontal and vertical projection profiles are extracted from nested sub-blocks of scanned page images of technical documents. The thresholded profile strings are parsed using the compiler utilities Lex and Yacc. The significant document components are demarcated and identified by the recursive application of block grammars. Backtracking for error recovery and branch and bound for maximum-area labeling are implemented with Unix Shell programs. Results of the segmentation and labeling process are stored in a labeled X-Y tree. It is shown that families of technical documents that share the same layout conventions can be readily analyzed. More than 20 types of …
Development Of A Classification System For Computer Viruses In The Ibm Pc Environment Using The Dos Operating System, Hugh R. Browne
Development Of A Classification System For Computer Viruses In The Ibm Pc Environment Using The Dos Operating System, Hugh R. Browne
Theses : Honours
The threat to computers worldwide from computer viruses is increasing as new viruses and variants proliferate. Availability of virus construction tools to facilitate 'customised' virus production and wider use of more sophisticated means of evading detection, such as encryption, polymorphic transformation and memory resident 'stealth' techniques increase this problem. Some viruses employ methods to guard against their own eradication from an infected computer, whilst other viruses adopt measures to prevent disassembly of the virus for examination and analysis. Growth in computer numbers and connectivity provide a growing pool of candidate hosts for infection. Standardised and flexible systems for classification and …

Trainrec: A System For Training Feedforward & Simple Recurrent Networks Efficiently And Correctly, Barry L. Kalman, Stan C. Kwasny
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
TRAINREC is a system for training feedforward and recurrent neural networks that incorporates several ideas. It uses the conjugate-gradient method which is demonstrably more efficient than traditional backward error propagation. We assume epoch-based training and derive a new error function having several desirable properties absent from the traditional sum-of-squared-error function. We argue for skip (shortcut) connections where appropriate and the preference for a sigmoidal yielding values over the [-1,1] interval. The input feature space is often over-analyzed, but by using singular value decomposition, input patterns can be conditioned for better learning often with a reduced number of input units. Recurrent …

A Unified Model For Shared-Memory And Message-Passing Systems, Kenneth Goldman, Katherine Yelick
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
A unified model of distributed systems that accomodates both shared-memory and message-passing communication is proposed. An extension of the I/O automaton model of Lynch and Tuttle, the model provides a full range of types of atomic accesses to shared memory, from basic reads and writes to read-modify-write. In addition to supporting the specification and verification of shared memory algorithms, the unified model is particularly helpful for proving correspondences between atomic shared objects and invocation-response systems and for proving the correctness of systems that contain both message passing and shared memory (such as a network of shared-memory multiprocessors or a distributed …

Neural Network Diagnosis Of Malignant Melanoma From Color Images, Fikret ErçAl, C. Chawla, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss
Computer Science Technical Reports
Malignant melanoma is the deadliest form of all skin cancers. Approximately 32,000 new cases of malignant melanoma were diagnosed in 1991, with approximately 80 percent of patients expected to survive five years [1]. Fortunately, if detected early, even malignant melanoma may be treated successfully. Thus, in recent years, there has been a rising interest in the automated detection and diagnosis of skin cancer, particularly malignant melanoma [2]. In this paper, we present a novel neural network approach for the automated separation of melanoma from three other benign categories of tumors which exhibit melanoma-like characteristics. Our approach is based on devising …

The importance of the inspection process has been magnified by the requirements of the modern manufacturing environment. In electronics mass-production manufacturing facilities, an attempt is often made to achieve 100 % quality assurance of all parts, subassemblies, and finished goods. A variety of approaches for automated visual inspection of printed circuits have been reported over the last two decades. In this survey, algorithms and techniques for the automated inspection of printed circuit boards are examined. A classification tree for these algorithms is presented and the algorithms are grouped according to this classification. This survey concentrates mainly on image analysis and …
X.500 Directory Service Support For Electronic Mail, Mihai G. Sirbu
X.500 Directory Service Support For Electronic Mail, Mihai G. Sirbu
Masters Theses
"One of the difficult problems on the Internet is finding the electronic mail addresses of users. In practice, there are some indirect ways of finding these addresses such as the finger program in UNIX, but almost all of these methods require the user to know the exact host name of the destination. What is most desirable is an automated mechanism which provides the e-mail addresses of users if some minimal information about the destination site is known.
This thesis describes the design of such a directory service support system, based on the X.500 Series of CCITT Recommendation, for the elm …

Detection Of Skin Tumor Boundaries In Color Images, Fikret Erçal, M. Moganti, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
A simple and yet effective method for finding the borders of tumors is presented as an initial step towards the diagnosis of skin tumors from their color images. The method makes use of an adaptive color metric from the red, green, and blue planes that contains information for discriminating the tumor from the background. Using this suitable coordinate transformation, the image is segmented. The tumor portion is then extracted from the segmented image and borders are drawn. Experimental results that verify the effectiveness of this approach are given
