The Dark Side Of Risk (What Your Mother Never Told You About Time Warp), David M. Nicol, Xiaowen Liu Nov 1996

The Dark Side Of Risk (What Your Mother Never Told You About Time Warp), David M. Nicol, Xiaowen Liu

Computer Science Technical Reports

This paper is a reminder of the danger of allowing ``risk'' when synchronizing a parallel discrete-event simulation: a simulation code that runs correctly on a serial machine may, when run in parallel, fail catastrophically. This can happen when Time Warp presents an ``inconsistent'' message to an LP, a message that makes absolutely no sense given the LP's state. Failure may result if the simulation modeler did not anticipate the possibility of this inconsistency. While the problem is not new, there has been little discussion of how to deal with it; furthermore the problem may not be evident to new users …

A Critique Of The Telecommunications Description Language (Ted), Brian J. Premore, David M. Nicol, Xiaowen Liu Nov 1996

A Critique Of The Telecommunications Description Language (Ted), Brian J. Premore, David M. Nicol, Xiaowen Liu

Computer Science Technical Reports

TeD is an object-oriented description language designed to facilitate the modeling of large scale telecommunication networks, with simulation on parallel and distributed platforms. TeD models are mapped to the Georgia Tech Time Warp engine (GTW) for execution. In this paper we outline the features of TeD, pointing out its strengths and identifying characteristics that gave us trouble as we used TeD to model detailed networks. Our issues are motivated specifically by a model of TCP and a model of multicast resource allocation. Our intention is to illustrate by example what TeD can do, and characteristics that a potential TeD user …

High Quality Alias Free Image Rotation, Charles B. Owen, Fillia Makedon Nov 1996

High Quality Alias Free Image Rotation, Charles B. Owen, Fillia Makedon

Dartmouth Scholarship

This paper presents new algorithms for the rotation of images. The primary design criteria for these algorithms is very high quality. Common methods for image rotation, including convolutional and separable approaches, are examined and shown to exhibit significant high frequency aliasing problems. A new resampling filter design methodology is presented which minimizes the problem for conventional convolution-based image rotation. The paper also presents a new separable image rotation algorithm which exhibits improved performance in term of reduction in artifacts and an efficient $O(N^{2} log N)$ running time.

Galley: A New Parallel File System For Parallel Applications, Nils Nieuwejaar Nov 1996

Galley: A New Parallel File System For Parallel Applications, Nils Nieuwejaar

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Most current multiprocessor file systems are designed to use multiple disks in parallel, using the high aggregate bandwidth to meet the growing I/O requirements of parallel scientific applications. Most multiprocessor file systems provide applications with a conventional Unix-like interface, allowing the application to access those multiple disks transparently. This interface conceals the parallelism within the file system, increasing the ease of programmability, but making it difficult or impossible for sophisticated application and library programmers to use knowledge about their I/O to exploit that parallelism. In addition to providing an insufficient interface, most current multiprocessor file systems are optimized for a …

Four-Fermion Production In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Of 130 And 136 Gev, D. Buskulic, Manoj Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Four-fermion events have been selected in a data sample of 5.8 pb−1 collected with the aleph detector at centre-of-mass energies of 130 and 136 GeV. The final states ℓ+ℓ−qq, ℓ+ℓ−ℓ+ℓ−, ννqq, and ννℓ+ℓ− have been examined. Five events are observed in the data, in agreement with the Standard Model predictions of 6.67±0.38 events from four-fermion processes and 0.14−0.05+0.19 from background processes.

A Fast Parallel Implementation Of The Wavelet Packet Best Basis Algorithm On The Mp-2 For Real-Time Mri, Sumit Chawla, Dennis M. Healy Jr Oct 1996

A Fast Parallel Implementation Of The Wavelet Packet Best Basis Algorithm On The Mp-2 For Real-Time Mri, Sumit Chawla, Dennis M. Healy Jr

Computer Science Technical Reports

Adaptive signal representations such as those determined by best-basis type algorithms have found extensive application in image processing, although their use in real-time applications may be limited by the complexity of the algorithm. In contrast to the wavelet transform which can be computed in O(n) time, the full wavelet packet expansion required for the standard best basis search takes O(n log n) time to compute. In the parallel world, however, both transforms take O(log n) to compute when the number of processors equal the number of data elements, making the wavelet packet expansion attractive to implement. This note describes near …

A Fertility Channel Model For Post-Correction Of Continuous Speech Recognition, Eric K. Ringger, James F. Allen Oct 1996

A Fertility Channel Model For Post-Correction Of Continuous Speech Recognition, Eric K. Ringger, James F. Allen

Faculty Publications

We have implemented a post-processor called SPEECHPP to correct word-level errors committed by an arbitrary speech recognizer. Applying a noisy-channel model, SPEECHPP uses a Viterbi beam-search that employs language and channel models. Previous work demonstrated that a simple word-for-word channel model was sufficient to yield substantial incieases in word accuracy. This paper demonstrates that some improvements in word accuracy result from augmenting the channel model with an account of word fertility in the channel. This work further demonstrates that a modern continuous speech recognizer can be used in "black-box" fashion for robustly recognizing speech for which the recognizer was not …

An Evidential Reasoning Approach To Attribute Value Conflict Resolution In Database Integration, Ee Peng Lim, Jaideep Srivastava, Shashi Shekhar Oct 1996

An Evidential Reasoning Approach To Attribute Value Conflict Resolution In Database Integration, Ee Peng Lim, Jaideep Srivastava, Shashi Shekhar

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Resolving domain incompatibility among independently developed databases often involves uncertain information. DeMichiel [1] showed that uncertain information can be generated by the mapping of conflicting attributes to a common domain, based on some domain knowledge. In this paper, we show that uncertain information can also arise when the database integration process requires information not directly represented in the component databases, but can be obtained through some summary of data. We therefore propose an extended relational model based on Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence [2] to incorporate such uncertain knowledge about the source databases. The extended relation uses evidence sets to represent …

Practical Implementation Of Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation Using Neyman-Pearson Based Hypothesis Testing And Spectral Estimation Tools, Peter D. Hanlon Sep 1996

Practical Implementation Of Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation Using Neyman-Pearson Based Hypothesis Testing And Spectral Estimation Tools, Peter D. Hanlon

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates and develops various modifications to the Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation (MMAE) algorithm. The standard MMAE uses a bank of Kalman filters, each based on a different model of the system. Each of the filters predict the system response, based on its system model, to a given input and form the residual difference between the prediction and sensor measurements of the system response. Model differences in the input matrix, output matrix, and state transition matrix, which respectively correspond to an actuator failure, sensor failure, and an incorrectly modeled flight condition for a flight control failure application, were investigated …

This research addresses two objectives. The first objective is to identify an appropriate set of software indicators and metrics to be used by government program offices for the management of development efforts involving software systems for AI and ES. The second objective is to demonstrate how the resources of the National Software Data and Information Repository (NSDIR) can be used in order …

Physical Modeling For Interaction In Real-Time Simulation, Curtis Lisle Sep 1996

Physical Modeling For Interaction In Real-Time Simulation, Curtis Lisle

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

The goal of this project was to model objects in a simulated environment with a method which allows physically-correct behavior to be calculated in real-time. Our approach studied the interaction between differing object types and used object-oriented software design to create a class hierarchy of objects suitable for interactive speed virtual environment simulation. We studied physical modeling systems and constraint systems as techniques to control the behavior of objects in our simulations. We also studied two different ways to achieve distributed execution of an object-oriented simulation. In our first approach, we designed a set of simulation software which ran built …

An On-The-Fly Decoding Technique For Reed-Solomon Codes, Yuan Xing Lee, Robert H. Deng, Eng Hean Koh Sep 1996

An On-The-Fly Decoding Technique For Reed-Solomon Codes, Yuan Xing Lee, Robert H. Deng, Eng Hean Koh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An on-the-fly error correction technique for double-byte-error-correction (DBEC) and triple-byte-error-detection (TBED) Reed-Solomon (RS) codes is presented in this paper. This new algorithm finds number of byte-errors (single byte-error, double-byte errors, and triple-byte errors) by simply testing the values of a few syndrome functions, and locates and corrects the byte-errors directly without using the standard iterative algorithms for finding the error location polynomial. More importantly, it neither suffers from malfunctions incurred in Deng-Costello algorithm (1987), nor requires syndrome re-calculation as in Koksal-Yucel's modification (1992). It is also much more simpler and faster than the original Deng-Costello algorithm. It has found applications …

Mass Limit For The Standard Model Higgs Boson With The Full Lep I Aleph Data Sample, Buskulic, D.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas Sep 1996

Mass Limit For The Standard Model Higgs Boson With The Full Lep I Aleph Data Sample, Buskulic, D.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The reaction e+e− → HZ∗ is used to search for the standard model Higgs boson in the Hνν and the Hℓ+ℓ− channels. The data sample corresponds to about 4.5 million hadronic Z decays collected by the ALEPH experiment at LEP from 1989 to 1995 at centre-of-mass energies at and around the Z peak. Three candidate events are found in the Hμ+μ− channel, in agreement with the expected background from the electroweak process e+e− ℓ+ℓ−qq. This search results in a 95% C.L. lower limit on the Higgs boson mass of 63.9 GeV/c2.

Measurement Of The B Forward-Backward Asymmetry And Mixing Using High-P⊥ Leptons, Buskulic, D., M. Thulasidas Sep 1996

Measurement Of The B Forward-Backward Asymmetry And Mixing Using High-P⊥ Leptons, Buskulic, D., M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The B0 - B̄0 average mixing parameter χ and b forward-backward asymmetry AFB0(b) are measured from a sample of about 4 200 000 Z → qq̄ events recorded with the ALEPH detector at LEP in the years 1990–1995. High transverse momentum electrons and muons produced in b semileptonic decays provide the tag of the quark flavour and of its charge. The average mixing parameter and the pole b asymmetry are measured to be χ = 0.1246 ± 0.0051stat ± 0.0052syst, AFB0(b) = 0.1008 ± 0.0043stat ± 0.0028syst. The value of sin2θweff = 0.23198 ± 0.00092 is extracted from the asymmetry measurement.

Search For Charginos And Neutralinos With R-Parity Violation At √S = 130 And 136 Gev, Buskulic, D.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas Sep 1996

Search For Charginos And Neutralinos With R-Parity Violation At √S = 130 And 136 Gev, Buskulic, D.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Searches for charginos and neutralinos produced in e +e - collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 130 and 136 GeV have been performed under the assumptions that R-parity is not conserved, that the dominant R-parity violating coupling involves only leptonic fields, and that the lifetime of the lightest supersymmetric particle can be neglected. In the 5.7 pb -1 data sample collected by ALEPH, no candidate events were found. As a result, chargino and neutralino masses and couplings are constrained and the domains previously excluded at LEP1 are extended.

Search For Cp Violation In The Decay Z → B B̄ G, Buskulic, D.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas Sep 1996

Search For Cp Violation In The Decay Z → B B̄ G, Buskulic, D.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

About three million hadronic decays of the Z collected by ALEPH in the years 1991 to 1994 are used to search for anomalous CP violation beyond the Standard Model in the decay Z → bb̄g. The study is performed by analyzing angular correlations between the two quarks and the gluon in three-jet events and by measuring the differential two-jet rate. No signal of CP violation is found. For the combinations of anomalous CP violating couplings, ĥb = ĥAbgVh - ĥVbgAb and hb* = √ĥVb2 + ĥAb2, limits of | ĥb | b*
