Tool Support For Two-Tiered Architectural Design For Automotive Control Systems, Kevin Steppe, Greg Bylenok, David Garlan, Bradley Schmerl, Kanat Abirov, Nataliya Shevchenko Jan 2004

Tool Support For Two-Tiered Architectural Design For Automotive Control Systems, Kevin Steppe, Greg Bylenok, David Garlan, Bradley Schmerl, Kanat Abirov, Nataliya Shevchenko

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An attractive approach to architecture-based design is to structure the development process into two tiers. The top tier represents the abstract design (or architecture) of a system in terms of abstract components. The bottom tier refines that design by making specific implementation decisions, such as platform, middleware, and component implementations. While attractive in principle, there has been relatively little industrial-based experience to shed light on problems and solutions involved in such an approach. In this paper we describe our experience in developing tools to introduce a two-tiered model-based approach to the design of Ford Motor Company’s automotive control systems, highlighting …

A Study In Modeling Low-Conservation Protein Superfamilies, Chang Wang, Stephen Scott, Jun Zhang, Qingping Tao, Dmitri E. Fomenko, Vadim N. Gladyshev Jan 2004

A Study In Modeling Low-Conservation Protein Superfamilies, Chang Wang, Stephen Scott, Jun Zhang, Qingping Tao, Dmitri E. Fomenko, Vadim N. Gladyshev

School of Computing: Technical Reports

We present several algorithms for identification of new proteins in superfamilies with low primary sequence conservation. The low conservation of primary sequence in protein superfamilies such as Thioredoxin-fold (Trxfold) makes conventional methods such as hidden Markov models (HMMs) difficult to use. Therefore, we use structural properties to build our classifiers. These structural properties include secondary structure patterns as well as various properties of the residues in the protein sequences. We use this information to model proteins via hidden Markov models, support vector machines and algorithms in the multiple-instance learning model. In 20-fold jackknife tests, some of our models performed well, …

Greenpass: Flexible And Scalable Authorization For Wireless Networks, Sean Smith, Nicholas C. Goffee, Sung Hoon Kim, Punch Taylor, Meiyuan Zhao, John Marchesini Jan 2004

Greenpass: Flexible And Scalable Authorization For Wireless Networks, Sean Smith, Nicholas C. Goffee, Sung Hoon Kim, Punch Taylor, Meiyuan Zhao, John Marchesini

Computer Science Technical Reports

Wireless networks break the implicit assumptions that supported authorization in wired networks (that is: if one could connect, then one must be authorized). However, ensuring that only authorized users can access a campus-wide wireless network creates many challenges: we must permit authorized guests to access the same network resources that internal users do; we must accommodate the de-centralized way that authority flows in real universities; we also must work within standards, and accommodate the laptops and systems that users already have, without requiring additional software or plug-ins.

This paper describes our ongoing project to address this problem, using SPKI/SDSI delegation …

Comparison Of Modis And Avhrr 16-Day Normalized Difference Vegetation Index Composite Data, Kevin P. Gallo, Lei Ji, Brad Reed, John Dwyer, Jeffrey Eidenshink Jan 2004

Comparison Of Modis And Avhrr 16-Day Normalized Difference Vegetation Index Composite Data, Kevin P. Gallo, Lei Ji, Brad Reed, John Dwyer, Jeffrey Eidenshink

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data derived from visible and near-infrared data acquired by the MODIS and AVHRR sensors were compared over the same time periods and a variety of land cover classes within the conterminous USA. The relationship between the AVHRR derived NDVI values and those of future sensors is critical to continued long term monitoring of land surface properties. The results indicate that the 16-day composite values are quite similar over the 23 intervals of 2001 that were analyzed, and a linear relationship exists between the NDVI values from the two sensors. The composite AVHRR NDVI data were …

Self-Motivated, Task-Independent Reinforcement Learning For Robots, Lisa Meeden, James Marshall, Doug Blank Jan 2004

Self-Motivated, Task-Independent Reinforcement Learning For Robots, Lisa Meeden, James Marshall, Doug Blank

Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

This paper describes a method for designing robots to learn self-motivated behaviors rather than externally specified be- haviors. Self-motivation is viewed as an emergent property arising from two competing pressures: the need to accu- rately predict the environment while simultaneously wanting to seek out novelty in the environment. The robot’s inter- nal prediction error is used to generate a reinforcement signal that pushes the robot to focus on areas of high error or nov- elty. A set of experiments are performed on a simulated robot to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach. The simulated robot is based directly on an …

The Governor Architecture: Avoiding Catastrophic Forgetting In Robot Learning, Jeremy Strober, Lisa Meeden, Doug Blank Jan 2004

The Governor Architecture: Avoiding Catastrophic Forgetting In Robot Learning, Jeremy Strober, Lisa Meeden, Doug Blank

Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

The governor architecture is a new method for avoiding catatrophic forgetting in neural networks that is particularly useful in online robot learn- ing. The governor architecture uses a categorizer to identify events and excise long sequences of repetitive data that cause catastrophic forgetting in neural networks trained on robot-based tasks. We examine the performance of several variations of the governor architecture on a number of re- lated localization tasks using a simulated robot. The results show that governed networks perform far better than ungoverned networks. Governored networks are able to reliably and robustly prevent catastrophic forgetting in robot learning tasks.

Using Symbolic Knowledge In The Umls To Disambiguate Words In Small Datasets With A Naive Bayes Classifier, Gondy Leroy, Thomas C. Rindflesch Jan 2004

Using Symbolic Knowledge In The Umls To Disambiguate Words In Small Datasets With A Naive Bayes Classifier, Gondy Leroy, Thomas C. Rindflesch

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Current approaches to word sense disambiguation use and combine various machine-learning techniques. Most refer to characteristics of the ambiguous word and surrounding words and are based on hundreds of examples. Unfortunately, developing large training sets is time-consuming. We investigate the use of symbolic knowledge to augment machine-learning techniques for small datasets. UMLS semantic types assigned to concepts found in the sentence and relationships between these semantic types form the knowledge base. A naïve Bayes classifier was trained for 15 words with 100 examples for each. The most frequent sense of a word served as the baseline. The effect of increasingly …

What Effect Does Spyware Have On Consumer Trust, And Will Its Use Ever Be Acceptable?, James Anthony Hatton

The Corinthian

Trust literature has been thoroughly developed in the field of Information Systems. However, recent innovations in broadband networks and the growing popularity of the Internet has brought rise to software called spyware - a program that employs a user's Internet connection in the background without the user's knowledge or explicit permission. This study attempts to analyze spyware and explore the nature of its effect on consumer trust. Additionally, the research examines what controls, if any may make the use of spyware acceptable to the consumer.

Context Sensitive Anomaly Monitoring Of Process Control Flow To Detect Mimicry Attacks And Impossible Paths, Haizhi Xu, Wenliang Du, Steve J. Chapin Jan 2004

Context Sensitive Anomaly Monitoring Of Process Control Flow To Detect Mimicry Attacks And Impossible Paths, Haizhi Xu, Wenliang Du, Steve J. Chapin

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Many intrusions amplify rights or circumvent defenses by issuing system calls in ways that the original process did not. Defense against these attacks emphasizes preventing attacking code from being introduced to the system and detecting or preventing execution of the injected code. Another approach, where this paper fits in, is to assume that both injection and execution have occurred, and to detect and prevent the executing code from subverting the target system. We propose a method using waypoints: marks along the normal execution path that a process must follow to successfully access operating system services. Waypoints actively log trustworthy context …

Cooperative Game Theory Within Multi-Agent Systems For Systems Scheduling, Derek Messie, Jae C. Oh Jan 2004

Cooperative Game Theory Within Multi-Agent Systems For Systems Scheduling, Derek Messie, Jae C. Oh

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Research concerning organization and coordination within multi-agent systems continues to draw from a variety of architectures and methodologies. The work presented in this paper combines techniques from game theory and multi-agent systems to produce self-organizing, polymorphic, lightweight, embedded agents for systems scheduling within a large-scale real-time systems environment. Results show how this approach is used to experimentally produce optimum real-time scheduling through the emergent behavior of thousands of agents. These results are obtained using a SWARM simulation of systems scheduling within a High Energy Physics experiment consisting of 2500 digital signal processors.

Pokémon® Cards And The Shortest Common Superstring, Mark Stamp, Austin Stamp

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

Evidence is presented that certain sequences of Pokémon cards are determined by selecting consecutive elements from a longer sequence. We then consider the problem of recovering the shortest common superstring (SCS), i.e., the shortest string that contains each of the Pokémon card sequences as a consecutive substring. The SCS problem arises in many applications, most notably in DNA sequencing.
