Jamming-Tolerant Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Network For Detection Sensor Networks, Michael A. Eddy
Jamming-Tolerant Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Network For Detection Sensor Networks, Michael A. Eddy
Theses and Dissertations
This research evaluates the impact of electronic warfare, particularly jamming, on an audio-based drone detection wireless sensor network (WSN) using Monte Carlo simulations. A six-node IEEE 802.15.4 network, with five edge nodes and a central sink, is tested against jamming probabilities ranging from 0-100% in 5% increments across 30 iterations per configuration. Results show that packet delivery ratio (PDR) degrades linearly at approximately 20% per jammed node, while detection performance often exceeds PDR. Even at 80% jamming, detection success rates remain above 57%, highlighting resilience despite network degradation. The study reveals that jamming effectiveness depends on node placement relative to …
Emergency Response Digital Twin: Integrating Augmented Reality And Live Position Data With Simulation-Aided Decision-Making In Real-Time, Joseph Fuentes
Emergency Response Digital Twin: Integrating Augmented Reality And Live Position Data With Simulation-Aided Decision-Making In Real-Time, Joseph Fuentes
Theses and Dissertations
With the growing use of simulation across industries, the digital twin remains an underexplored research area, particularly in emergency management and response. Its real-time updating capability is often overlooked due to the misconception that "digital twin" is merely a complex term for simulation. This paper highlights its distinctiveness through an evasion exercise involving two independent entities in a collocated environment. Using a highly integrated virtual environment (HIVE) and internet of things (IoT) devices, we link the physical system with an analytical simulation, demonstrating the impact of lag times in high-pressure scenarios. The computational model leverages agent-based modeling (ABM) and discrete-event …
Early-Phase Cost Estimation For Department Of Defense Construction Projects Via Artificial Neural Networks: Implications And Policy Recommendations For Artificial Intelligence Integration, Kobe T. Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
The Department of Defense lost over 500 million dollars between 2016 and 2024, partially due to poor early cost estimates resulting in cost overruns. practice for cost estimation relied on parametric techniques that incorporate historical data, subject matter experts in cost estimating, and predictive software applications. The main motivation for this study was to assess the viability of artificial neural networks as a means of providing a more accurate cost estimate in the early design phases of a construction project. The dataset initially contained approximately 48,000 data points from a database of various Air Force projects, including maintenance, repair, minor …

Machine Learning Techniques To Predict Solar Particle Events And Radiation Of Aircrew, Haley Traub
Theses and Dissertations
Solar Particle Events (SPEs) are high-energy phenomena from the Sun that pose risks to technology, human health, and Air Force operations. Accurate prediction of SPEs exceeding 100 MeV is crucial for mitigating these risks. This thesis explores using Bayesian statistical models to predict such events, integrating prior knowledge from solar physics with the ability to update predictions based on new data. The research uses a dataset spanning three solar cycles (21–23) and incorporates attributes like flare fluence, peak flux, latitude, longitude, and class. Four Bayesian models (PyMC, Bnlearn, and two Dredge models) were compared to machine learning models. The Bayesian …

Event-Based Camera Simulation And Neural Network Processing For Autonomous Aerial Refueling, Stephanie C. Hanson
Theses and Dissertations
Event-based cameras excel in dynamic environments, and do not face challenges like washout and motion blur, like a frame-based camera. This work describes the process used to collect the first EBS data collect for use in AAR, and develops an event simulator to generate synthetic training data for evaluating CNN architectures on asynchronous data. The three models compared are a traditional CNN, a YOLO-based CNN, and an asynchronous sparse CNN. The YOLO-based model achieved the best accuracy, while the sparse CNN, despite being less optimized, maintained an average IoU of 0.9. These results highlight the potential of asynchronous approaches for …

Development Of An Algorithm To Identify The Presence Of Luks-Encrypted Volumes On A Forensic Image Of A Drive, Nicholas Flynn, Michael Black
Shelby Hall Graduate Research Forum Posters
Current forensic tools struggle to effectively detect encrypted storage media. In recent years, there have been significant advancements, but a noticeable gap remains when it comes to identifying encrypted volumes from metadata alone. The goal of this research is to develop a novel algorithm that will identify the presence of volumes on a disk image which have been encrypted with the Linux Unified Key Setup (LUKS) encryption algorithm, in an effort to aid digital forensics investigations. Bad actors often use encryption as an anti-forensics tool to pose significant challenges to forensic investigators, especially when it is done within sections of …

Shelby Hall Graduate Research Forum Posters
The integration of Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) have made OT devices vulnerable to threats that have been successfully exploited with devastating results. Many modern techniques for hardening and securing enterprise IT systems are either incompatible with OT components in an Industrial Control System (ICS), reduce the efficiency of processes, or are prohibitively expensive to implement. Research in the area of ICS security focuses on a top-down approach, such as intrusion prevention by securing the perimeter of the network and hardening computer systems. This approach is useful in business IT systems, but full compatibility with OT components in …

Hand1000: Generating Realistic Hands From Text With Only 1,000 Images, Haozhuo Zhang, Bin Zhu, Yu Cao, Yanbin Hao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Text-to-image generation models have achieved remarkable advancements in recent years, aiming to produce realistic images from textual descriptions. However, these models often struggle with generating anatomically accurate representations of human hands. The resulting images frequently exhibit issues such as incorrect numbers of fingers, unnatural twisting or interlacing of fingers, or blurred and indistinct hands. These issues stem from the inherent complexity of hand structures and the difficulty in aligning textual descriptions with precise visual depictions of hands. To address these challenges, we propose a novel approach named Hand1000 that enables the generation of realistic hand images with target gesture using …

Neurovig: Integrating Event Cameras For Resource-Efficient Video Grounding, Dulanga Weerakoon, Vigneshwaran Subbaraju, Joo Hwee Lim, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Spatio-Temporal Video Grounding (STVG) - the task of identifying the target object in the field-of-view that the language instruction refers to - is a fundamental vision-language task. Current STVG approaches typically utilize feeds from an RGB camera that is assumed to be always-on and process the video frames using complex neural network pipelines. As a result they often impose prohibitive system overheads (energy latency) on pervasive devices. To address this we propose NeuroViG with two key innovations: (a) leveraging on event streams from a low-power neuromorphic event camera sensor to perform selective triggering of the more energy-hungry RGB camera for …

Ragg: Retrieval-Augmented Grasp Generation Model, Zhenhua Tang, Bin Zhu, Yanbin Hao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Richang Hong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Intent-based grasp generation inherently involves challenges such as manipulation ambiguity and modality gaps. To address these, we propose a novel Retrieval-Augmented Grasp Generation model (RAGG). Our key insight is that when humans manipulate new objects, they initially mimic the interaction patterns observed in similar objects, then progressively adjust hand-object contact. Consequently, we develop RAGG as a two-stage approach, encompassing retrieval-guided generation and structurally stable grasp refinement. In the first stage, we propose a Retrieval-Augmented Diffusion Model (ReDim), which identifies the most relevant interaction instance from a knowledge base to explicitly guide grasp generation, thereby mitigating ambiguity and bridging modality gaps …

Aligning Large Language Models For Faithful Integrity Against Opposing Argument, Yong Zhao, Yang Deng, See-Kiong Ng, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated impressive capabilities in complex reasoning tasks. However, they can be easily misled by unfaithful arguments during conversations, even when their original statements are correct. To this end, we investigate the problem of maintaining faithful integrity in LLMs. This involves ensuring that LLMs adhere to their faithful statements in the face of opposing arguments and are able to correct their incorrect statements when presented with faithful arguments. In this work, we propose a novel framework, named Alignment for Faithful Integrity with Confidence Estimation (AFICE), which aims to align the LLM responses with faithful integrity. Specifically, …
Offline Safe Reinforcement Learning Using Trajectory Classification, Ze Gong, Akshat Kumar, Pradeep Varakantham
Offline Safe Reinforcement Learning Using Trajectory Classification, Ze Gong, Akshat Kumar, Pradeep Varakantham
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Offline safe reinforcement learning (RL) has emerged as a promising approach for learning safe behaviors without engaging in risky online interactions with the environment. Most existing methods in offline safe RL rely on cost constraints at each time step (derived from global cost constraints) and this can result in either overly conservative policies or violation of safety constraints. In this paper, we propose to learn a policy that generates desirable trajectories and avoids undesirable trajectories. To be specific, we first partition the pre-collected dataset of state-action trajectories into desirable and undesirable subsets. Intuitively, the desirable set contains high reward and …

The growing interest in generating recipes from food images has drawn substantial research attention in recent years. Existing works for recipe generation primarily utilize a two-stage training method—first predicting ingredients from a food image and then generating instructions from both the image and ingredients. Large Multi-modal Models (LMMs), which have achieved notable success across a variety of vision and language tasks, shed light on generating both ingredients and instructions directly from images. Nevertheless, LMMs still face the common issue of hallu- cinations during recipe generation, leading to suboptimal performance. To tackle this issue, we propose a retrieval augmented large multimodal …

Mimic: Ai And Ar-Enhanced Multi-Modal, Immersive, Relative Instruction Comprehension, Dhanuja Wanniarachchi, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We present a multimodal instruction comprehension framework, called MImIC, that utilizes visual sensing (including LIDAR and 2D RGB sensing) & AI spatial reasoning capabilities to support more seamless and immersive interaction between humans and AI-driven situated assistive agents. MImIC's key new capability is to support disambiguation of a wider set of relative spatial references that users naturally employ while issuing spatially-situated instructions. To support enhanced visual grounding via a combination of both fully-qualified and relative attribute references, MImIC uses (a) a fine-tuned transformer-based language translation DNN to accurately convert natural verbal commands into a structured set of machine understandable constraints …

Explainable Neural Networks With Guarantee: A Sparse Estimation Approach, Antoine Ledent, Peng Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Balancing predictive power and interpretability has long been a challenging research area, particularly in powerful yet complex models like neural networks, where nonlinearity obstructs direct interpretation. This paper introduces a novel approach to constructing an explainable neural network that harmonizes predictiveness and explainability. Our model is designed as a linear combination of a sparse set of jointly learned features, each derived from a different trainable function applied to a single 1-dimensional input feature. Leveraging the ability to learn arbitrarily complex relationships, our neural network architecture enables automatic selection of a sparse set of important features, with the final prediction being …

Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy Staff Publications
Given the need for enforceable guardrails for artificial intelligence (AI) that protect the public and allow for innovation, the U.S. Government recently issued a Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights which outlines five principles of safe AI design, use, and implementation. One in particular, the right to notice and explanation, requires accurately informing the public about the use of AI that impacts them in ways that are easy to understand. Yet, in the healthcare setting, it is unclear what goal the right to notice and explanation serves, and the moral importance of patient-level disclosure. We propose three normative functions …
Abolition By Algorithm, Peter N. Salib
Abolition By Algorithm, Peter N. Salib
Michigan Law Review
In one sense, America’s newest abolitionist movement—advocating the elimination of policing and prison—has been a success. Following the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, a small group of self-described radicals convinced a wide swath of ordinary liberals to accept a sweeping claim: Mere reforms cannot meaningfully reduce prison and policing’s serious harms. Only elimination can. On the other hand, abolitionists have failed to secure lasting policy change. The difficulty is crime. In 2021, following a nationwide uptick in homicides, liberal support for abolitionist proposals collapsed. Despite being newly “abolition curious,” left-leaning voters consistently rejected concrete abolitionist policies. Faced with the difficult …

Leveraging Constraint Violation Signals For Action Constrained Reinforcement Learning, Janaka Chathuranga Brahmanage, Jiajing Ling, Akshat Kumar
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In many RL applications, ensuring an agent’s actions adhere to constraints is crucial for safety. Most previous methods in Action-Constrained Reinforcement Learning (ACRL) employ a projection layer after the policy network to correct the action. However projection-based methods suffer from issues like the zero gradient problem and higher runtime due to the usage of optimization solvers. Recently methods were proposed to train generative models to learn a differentiable mapping between latent variables and feasible actions to address this issue. However, generative models require training using samples from the constrained action space, which itself is challenging. To address such limitations, first, …

Occlusion-Insensitive Talking Head Video Generation Via Facelet Compensation, Yuhui Deng, Yuqin Lu, Yangyang Xu, Yongwei Nie, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Talking head video generation involves animating a still face image using facial motion cues derived from a driving video to replicate target poses and expressions. Traditional methods often rely on the assumption that the relative positions of facial keypoints remain unchanged. However, this assumption fails when keypoints are occluded or when the head is in a profile pose, leading to inconsistencies in identity and blurring in certain facial regions. In this paper, we introduce Occlusion-Insensitive Talking Head Video Generation, a novel approach that eliminates the reliance on spatial correlation of keypoints and instead leverages semantic correlation. Our method transforms facial …

Adapting Knowledge Prompt Tuning For Enhanced Automated Program Repair, Xuemeng Cai, Lingxiao Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Automated Program Repair (APR) aims to enhance software reliability by automatically generating bug-fixing patches. Recent work has improved the state-of-the-art of APR by fine-tuning pre-trained large language models (LLMs), such as CodeT5, for APR. However, the effectiveness of fine-tuning be-comes weakened in data scarcity scenarios, and data scarcity can be a common issue in practice, limiting fine-tuning performance. To alleviate this limitation, this paper adapts prompt tuning for enhanced APR and conducts a comprehensive study to evaluate its effectiveness in data scarcity scenarios, using three LLMs of different sizes and six diverse datasets across four programming languages. Prompt tuning rewrites …

Adaptive Deviation Learning For Visual Anomaly Detection With Data Contamination, Aanindya Sundar Das, Guansong Pang, Monowar Bhuyan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Visual anomaly detection targets to detect images that notably differ from normal pattern, and it has found extensive application in identifying defective parts within the manufacturing industry. These anomaly detection paradigms predominantly focus on training detection models using only clean, unlabeled normal samples, assuming an absence of contamination; a condition often unmet in real-world scenarios. The performance of these methods significantly depends on the quality of the data and usually decreases when exposed to noise. We introduce a systematic adaptive method that employs deviation learning to compute anomaly scores end-to-end while addressing data contamination by assigning relative importance to the …

Software development involves collaborative interactions where stakeholders express opinions across various platforms. Recognizing the sentiments conveyed in these interactions is crucial for the effective development and ongoing maintenance of software systems. For software products, analyzing the sentiment of user feedback, e.g., reviews, comments, and forum posts can provide valuable insights into user satisfaction and areas for improvement. This can guide the development of future updates and features. However, accurately identifying sentiments in software engineering datasets remains challenging. This study investigates bigger large language models (bLLMs) in addressing the labeled data shortage that hampers fine-tuned smaller large language models (sLLMs) in software …

Explaining multi-agent systems (MAS) is urgent as these systems become increasingly prevalent in various applications. Previous work has provided explanations for the actions or states of agents, yet falls short in understanding the black-boxed agent's importance within a MAS and the overall team strategy. To bridge this gap, we propose EMAI, a novel agent-level explanation approach that evaluates the individual agent's importance. Inspired by counterfactual reasoning, a larger change in reward caused by the randomized action of agent indicates its higher importance. We model it as a MARL problem to capture interactions across agents. Utilizing counterfactual reasoning, EMAI learns the …

Backdoor Token Unlearning: Exposing And Defending Backdoors In Pretrained Language Models, Peihai Jiang, Xixiang Lyu, Yige Li, Jing Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Supervised fine-tuning has become the predominant method for adapting large pretrained models to downstream tasks. However, recent studies have revealed that these models are vulnerable to backdoor attacks, where even a small number of malicious samples can successfully embed backdoor triggers into the model. While most existing defense methods focus on post-training backdoor defense, efficiently defending against backdoor attacks during training phase remains largely unexplored. To address this gap, we propose a novel defense method called Backdoor Token Unlearning (BTU), which proactively detects and neutralizes trigger tokens during the training stage. Our work is based on two key findings: 1) …

This article provides a new way of thinking about managerial discretion in information technology (IT) investment decisions. We delve into the existence, antecedents, and consequences of sticky IT investment behavior, an understudied managerial deliberate resource commitment decision in response to changes in sales. Guided by downsizing theory, we initially theorize and find that IT investments exhibit stickiness: IT investments move downward less for sales decreases than they move upward for equivalent increases. Then drawing upon agency theory, adjustment costs theory, and managerial expectations theory—which influence managers’ motivation for downsizing—we predict and demonstrate that managers’ empire-building incentives, their avoidance of adjustment …

The emerging virtual machine-based Android packers render existing unpacking techniques ineffective. The state-of-the-art unpacker falls short because it relies on unreliable heuristics and manually crafted semantic models. Hence, it cannot precisely recover app semantics necessary for malware detection. In this paper, we propose DeepVMUnProtect, a deep learning-based approach to automatically and accurately capture the semantics of VM-packed code, so as to facilitate semantic-based Android malware classification. Experiments have shown that DeepVMUnProtect outperforms the state-of-the-art tool on recovering opcode semantics in Qihoo(58.3%), Baidu(47.5%) and NMMP (58.8%) respectively, and can enable semantics-aware malware detection which prior work fails to do.
