A Dual Encryption Protocol For Scalable Secure Multicasting, Lakshminath R. Dondeti, Sarit Mukherjee, Ashok K. Samal Jan 1999

A Dual Encryption Protocol For Scalable Secure Multicasting, Lakshminath R. Dondeti, Sarit Mukherjee, Ashok K. Samal

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

In this paper we propose a dual encryption protocol for scalable secure multicasting. Multicasting is a scalable solution for group communication. It howevel; poses several unique security problems. We use hierarchical subgrouping to achieve scalability. Third party hosts or members of the multicast group are designated as subgroup managers. They are responsible for secret key distribution and group membership management at the subgroup level. Unlike existing secure multicast protocols, our protocol need not trust the subgroup managers with the distribution of data encryption keys. The dual encryption protocol proposed in this paper distributes encrypted data encryption keys via subgroup managers. …

Web-Based Interlibrary Loan System, Ee Peng Lim, Schubert Foo, Cheng Hai Tan, Kwang-Yong Tan Jan 1999

Web-Based Interlibrary Loan System, Ee Peng Lim, Schubert Foo, Cheng Hai Tan, Kwang-Yong Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Interlibrary loan (ILL) system is one of the important library services provided by most public libraries. Through ILL, public libraries share their collections of reading material and library users are able to access library resources beyond their affiliated libraries. However, the present manual ILL process is inconvenient, inefficient and error-prone. In this project, we developed a system that automated many tedious procedures in the existing ILL system. The new ILL system is realized by a number of Java applets customized for librarians and library users. The new ILL system allows library users to submit ILL requests at any time using …

Weighting Unusual Feature Types, Nicholas Howe, Claire Cardie Jan 1999

Weighting Unusual Feature Types, Nicholas Howe, Claire Cardie

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Feature weighting is known empirically to improve classification accuracy for k-nearest neighbor classifiers in tasks with irrelevant features. Many feature weighting algorithms are designed to work with symbolic features, or numeric features, or both, but cannot be applied to problems with features that do not fit these categories. This paper presents a new k-nearest neighbor feature weighting algorithm that works with any kind of feature for which a distance function can be defined. Applied to an image classification task with unusual set-like features, the technique improves classification accuracy significantly. In tests on standard data sets from the UCI repository, the …

Embedded Training For Complex Information Systems, Brant A. Cheikes Jan 1999

Embedded Training For Complex Information Systems, Brant A. Cheikes

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

One approach to providing affordable operator training in the workplace is to augment applications with intelligent embedded training systems (ETS). Intelligent embedded training is highly interactive: trainees practice realistic problem-solving tasks on the prime application with guidance and feedback from the training system. This article makes three contributions to the theory and technology of ETS design. First, we describe a framework based on Norman’s “stages of user activity” model for defining the instructional objectives of an ETS. Second, we demonstrate a non-invasive approach to instrumenting software applications, thereby enabling them to collaborate with an ETS. Third, we describe a method …

Harp: A Distributed Query System For Legacy Public Libraries And Structured Databases, Ee Peng Lim, Ying Lu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The main purpose of a digital library is to facilitate users easy access to enormous amount of globally networked information. Typically, this information includes preexisting public library catalog data, digitized document collections, and other databases. In this article, we describe the distributed query system of a digital library prototype system known as HARP. In the HARP project, we have designed and implemented a distributed query processor and its query front-end to support integrated queries to preexisting public library catalogs and structured databases. This article describes our experiences in the design of an extended Sequel (SQL) query language known as HarpSQL. …

Making Sharing Pervasive: Ubiquitous Computing For Shared Note Taking, James A. Landay, Richard C. Davis Jan 1999

Making Sharing Pervasive: Ubiquitous Computing For Shared Note Taking, James A. Landay, Richard C. Davis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As a variety of low-cost note-taking devices becomes pervasive, shared notes can help work groups better communicate ideas and information. To explore this idea further, we carried out three related case studies of how members of a large research group shared meeting notes. The group found value in combining personal notes and presentation slides with a single, unifying document, such as regular meeting minutes. The minutes provided structure when there were too many sources of notes. We used this insight in our design of NotePals, a note-sharing system with a lightweight process, an interface, and hardware that distinguish it from …

Snowflake: Spanning Administrative Domains, Jon Howell, David Kotz Dec 1998

Snowflake: Spanning Administrative Domains, Jon Howell, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

Many distributed systems provide a ``single-system image'' to their users, so the user has the illusion that they are using a single system when in fact they are using many distributed resources. It is a powerful abstraction that helps users to manage the complexity of using distributed resources. The goal of the Snowflake project is to discover how single-system images can be made to span administrative domains. Our current prototype organizes resources in namespaces and distributes them using Java Remote Method Invocation. Challenging issues include how much flexibility should be built into the namespace interface, and how transparent the network …

Hey, You Got Your Language In My Operating System!, Jon Howell, Mark Montague Dec 1998

Hey, You Got Your Language In My Operating System!, Jon Howell, Mark Montague

Computer Science Technical Reports

Several projects in the operating systems research community suggest a trend of convergence among features once divided between operating systems and languages. We describe how partial evaluation and transformational programming systems apply to this trend by providing a general framework for application support, from compilation to run-time services. We contend that the community will no longer think of implementing a static collection of services and calling it an operating system; instead, this general framework will allow applications to be flexibly configured, and the ``operating system'' will simply be the application support that is supplied at run-time.

Optimizing Amplifier Placements In A Multiwavelength Optical Lan/Man: The Unequally Powered Wavelengths Case, Byrav Ramamurthy, Jason Iness, Biswanath Mukherjee Dec 1998

Optimizing Amplifier Placements In A Multiwavelength Optical Lan/Man: The Unequally Powered Wavelengths Case, Byrav Ramamurthy, Jason Iness, Biswanath Mukherjee

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Optical networks based on passive-star couplers and employing WDM have been proposed for deployment in local and metropolitan areas. These networks suffer from splitting, coupling, and attenuation losses. Since there is an upper bound on transmitter power and a lower bound on receiver sensitivity, optical amplifiers are usually required to compensate for the power losses mentioned above. Due to the high cost of amplifiers, it is desirable to minimize their total number in the network. However, an optical amplifier has constraints on the maximum gain and the maximum output power it can supply; thus, optical amplifier placement becomes a challenging …

The Simulation, Modeling And Analysis Of Wireless Local Area Networks Supporting The Ieee 802.11 Standard, Jaikwan Joo Dec 1998

The Simulation, Modeling And Analysis Of Wireless Local Area Networks Supporting The Ieee 802.11 Standard, Jaikwan Joo

Theses and Dissertations

Research to improve the performance of the IEEE 802.11 has been ongoing since 1990. The focus of this research has investigated the use of the MAC and Physical layers for improving throughput. An adaptive MAC protocol, CATER (Code Adapts To Enhance Reliability) is based on the proposed MAC standard for wireless local area networks (WLAN)-802. 11. IEEE 802.11 uses a fixed Pseudo-Noise (PN) code for spreading the information signal, implying a fixed process gain at the receiver. When the channel degrades, IEEE 802.11 offers only retransmissions at the MAC layer to contend with the corrupted medium. However, CATER allows communicating …

Development Of An Operations Research Software Package For Army Divisions, Blane C. Wilson Dec 1998

Development Of An Operations Research Software Package For Army Divisions, Blane C. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

There exists great potential for applying operations research techniques to solve specific problems in the areas of operations, installation support, and training at the Army division level. Because of the operational tempo of today's active-duty and reserve component units, command must focus on accomplishing the daily missions. Also, due their limited knowledge of the field, planners may not be aware of how operations research can be used to enhance planning and operations. Time, training funds, resources, safety, personnel, and equipment are all critical factors in this process. Operations research techniques could be used to improve division-level operations by saving time, …

Methodology And Theory Building In Mis Research, Nancy Lightner, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper reports on the stage of maturity of MIS research according to the McGrath (1979) model, as evidenced by the theory building occurring in two top MIS research journals. While MIS as a discipline continues to grow, its development depends on establishing a cumulative tradition of good research (Keen 1980). Of the published papers surveyed that are relevant to theory building, 81% of them relate to theory development, while 18% address theory testing. Of the papers involving data collection, more than half use field studies as the methodology. In order to advance MIS as a mature field, it is …

Validation Of Waimss Incident Duration Estimation Model, Wei Wu, Pushkin Kachroo, Kaan Ozbay Oct 1998

Validation Of Waimss Incident Duration Estimation Model, Wei Wu, Pushkin Kachroo, Kaan Ozbay

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

This paper presents an effort to validate the traffic incident duration estimation model of WAIMSS (wide area incident management support system). Duration estimation model of WAIMSS predicts the incident duration based on an estimation tree which was calibrated using incident data collected in Northern Virginia. Due to the limited sample size, a full scale test of the distribution, mean and variance of incident duration was performed only for the root node of the estimation tree, white only mean tests were executed at all other nodes whenever a data subset was available. Further studies were also conducted on the model error …

However, with the advent of World Wide Web and Internet based programming tools such as Java, it is now possible to develop platform independent decision support tools for the incident management agencies. Any agency will be able to use …

Variability Analysis Of Discrete Cosine Transform Coefficient (Dctc) Features For Speech Processing, Bingjun Dai Oct 1998

Variability Analysis Of Discrete Cosine Transform Coefficient (Dctc) Features For Speech Processing, Bingjun Dai

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this research, the variability of Discrete Cosine Transform Coefficient (DCTC) features was investigated. Additionally, a new pitch-synchronous processing method was explored to increase the stability of features and to reduce window effects when compared to the regular method. The noise sources that lead to feature variability were analyzed, and different smoothing methods were tested. It was found that longer frames, frequency warping, time smoothing of the log spectrum, and DCS level time smoothing, all help reduce DCTC variability and increase classification performance. The pitch synchronous method was implemented with Matlab. Important processing methods, including pitch period estimation, time domain …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Intelligent transportation systems (ATS) have received much attention in the transportation community and by the government in the past decade. The technology is an extension of intelligent vehicle highway systems to include transportation modes beyond highways. Major elements of ITS include: advanced traffic management systems; advanced traveller information systems; automated highway systems; the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative; and advanced commercial vehicle systems. ITS initiatives are proposed for both urban and rural areas to increase transportation system capacity by more fully utilizing the existing transportation system and improve transportation system safety. The feasibility of realizing a fully automated highway system is discussed.

Analysis Of The Interpolation Error Between Multiresolution Images, Bryan S. Morse Oct 1998

Analysis Of The Interpolation Error Between Multiresolution Images, Bryan S. Morse

Faculty Publications

Many rendering or image-analysis systems require calculation of versions of an image at lesser resolutions than the original. Because the filtering required to perform such calculations accurately cannot typically be done in real time, many systems use interpolation between images at precalculated resolutions. This discrete sampling of the scale component of multiresolution image spaces is analogous to spatial sampling in discrete images. This paper quantifies and bounds the error that can be introduced during such interpolation as a function of the scale-space sampling rate used. A method is presented that uses the diffusion equation to relate spatial derivatives to scale …
