Navigating Ai-Nature Frictions: Autonomous Vehicle Testing And Nature-Based Constraints, Prerona Das, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

In cities, the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being directed towards transforming different aspects of urban life. These applications take material form in urban spaces, with autonomous vehicles (AVs) providing a prominent example. AI systems rely on large volumes of data on their surroundings to refine the algorithms and enhance the accuracy of prediction for operational efficiency and safety. However, such algorithmic learning and execution can present challenges when dealing with the unpredictable, complex, and dynamic aspects of urban spaces. Nature is a paradigmatic example of such unpredictability, because natural phenomena usually defy consistent patterns and precise data-based modelling. …

Design Principles For Customer‑Engaging Digital Service Systems: An Action Research Study, Keng Siau, Xiaofeng Chen, Xin Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Digital services represent a business approach employed by organizations to operate in the digital environment. However, systematic development guidelines for developing quality digital service systems are lacking in the literature. The authors identified four general challenges for developing and implementing customer-engaging digital service systems (CEDSS). By employing the method of canonical action research in a digital service system project, they derived 10 design principles for developing high-quality CEDSS. They empirically evaluated the design principles in the development project and through follow-up focus group sessions. The design principles provide applicable and actionable guidelines for the development of CEDSS.

Precision-Weighted Federated Learning, Jonatan Reyes, Lisa Di Jorio, Cecile Low-Kam, Marta Kersten-Oertel Dec 2025

Precision-Weighted Federated Learning, Jonatan Reyes, Lisa Di Jorio, Cecile Low-Kam, Marta Kersten-Oertel

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Federated learning (FL) using the federated averaging (FedAvg) algorithm has shown great advantages for large-scale applications that rely on collaborative learning, especially when the training data is either unbalanced or inaccessible due to privacy constraints. We hypothesize that FedAvg underestimates the full extent of heterogeneity of data when the aggregation is performed. We propose Precision-Weighted Federated Learning (PW) a novel algorithm that takes into account the second raw moment (uncentered variance) of the stochastic gradient when computing the weighted average of the parameters of independent models trained in a FL setting. With PW, we address the communication and statistical challenges …

Genscore: Agent-Based Short-Answer Question Generation And Scoring In Software Engineering Courses, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Lwin Khin Shar Dec 2025

Genscore: Agent-Based Short-Answer Question Generation And Scoring In Software Engineering Courses, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Lwin Khin Shar

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Short-answer questions are commonly used in educational assessments, as they are often viewed as a more effective way than multiple-choice questions to determine whether students have achieved the intended learning outcomes. However, manually creating appropriate questions targeting different cognitive levels such as those defined by the Bloom’s Taxonomy, and grading text answers from students are not trivial tasks for instructors. Existing work on auto-question generation and scoring in computing education typically targets coding-based questions. However, in software engineering courses, assessments can extend beyond coding to understanding of processes, DevOps methodologies, system design, etc. This work aims to address the dual …

Machine Learning For Anomaly Detection In Neural Network Security And Srf Cavities, Hal Ferguson

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation explores the development and deployment of machine learning approaches to address critical challenges in anomaly detection across two distinct domains: neural network security in federated learning settings and cavity behavior analysis in particle accelerator operations at Jefferson Lab in Newport News, Virginia. Anomaly detection identifies deviations from expected patterns, safeguarding systems in cybersecurity, industry, and research against malicious activities and failures. This dissertation demonstrates how our machine learning approaches enhance detection accuracy and efficiency in both neural network security and industrial applications.

First, we investigate vulnerabilities in deep neural networks deployed in federated learning. Although federated learning preserves …

Large Language Models (Llms) For Clinical Note Generation: International Classification Of Disease (Icd) Code, Knowledge Graph (Kg) And Prompt Evaluation, Ivan P. Makohon Dec 2025

Large Language Models (Llms) For Clinical Note Generation: International Classification Of Disease (Icd) Code, Knowledge Graph (Kg) And Prompt Evaluation, Ivan P. Makohon

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

In the past decade, a surge in the amount of electronic health record (EHR) data in the United States occurred, driven by a favorable policy environment created by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009 and the 21st Century Cures Act of 2016. Clinical notes for patients’ assessments, diagnoses, and treatments are captured in these EHRs in free-form text by physicians, who spend a considerable amount of time entering them. Manually writing these notes is time-consuming, increasing patient waiting times and potentially delaying diagnoses. Large language models (LLMs), such as GPT-4o, possess the ability …

Rising From Ashes: Generalized Federated Learning Via Dynamic Parameter Reset, Jiahao Wu, Ming Hu, Yanxin Yang, Xiaofei Xie, Zekai Chen, Chenyu Song, Mingsong Chen Dec 2025

Rising From Ashes: Generalized Federated Learning Via Dynamic Parameter Reset, Jiahao Wu, Ming Hu, Yanxin Yang, Xiaofei Xie, Zekai Chen, Chenyu Song, Mingsong Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although Federated Learning (FL) is promising for privacy-preserving collaborative model training, it suffers from low inference performance due to heterogeneous client data. Due to heterogeneous data across clients, FL training easily learns client-specific overfitting features. Existing FL methods adopt coarsegrained averaging, which can easily cause the global model to get stuck in local optima, leading to poor generalization. Specifically, this paper presents a novel FL framework, FedPhoenix, to address this issue. It stochastically resets partial parameters in each round to destroy some features of the global model, guiding FL training to learn multiple generalized features for inference rather than specific …

When Less Language Is More: Language-Reasoning Disentanglement Makes Llms Better Multilingual Reasoners, Weixiang Zhao, Jiahe Guo, Yang Deng, Tongtong Wu, Wenxuan Zhang, Yulin Hu, Xingyu Sui, Yanyan Zhao, Wanxiang Che, Bing Qin, Tat-Seng Chua, Ting Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multilingual reasoning remains a significant challenge for large language models (LLMs), with performance disproportionately favoring high-resource languages. Drawing inspiration from cognitive neuroscience, which suggests that human reasoning functions largely independently of language processing, we hypothesize that LLMs similarly encode reasoning and language as separable components that can be disentangled to enhance multilingual reasoning. To evaluate this, we perform a causal intervention by ablating language-specific representations at inference time. Experiments on 10 open-weight LLMs spanning 11 typologically diverse languages show that this language-specific ablation consistently boosts multilingual reasoning performance. Layer-wise analyses further confirm that language and reasoning representations can be effectively …

Efskip: A New Error Feedback With Linear Speedup For Compressed Federated Learning With Arbitrary Data Heterogeneity, Hongyan Bao, Pengwen Chen, Ying Sun, Zhize Li Dec 2025

Efskip: A New Error Feedback With Linear Speedup For Compressed Federated Learning With Arbitrary Data Heterogeneity, Hongyan Bao, Pengwen Chen, Ying Sun, Zhize Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Due to the communication bottleneck in distributed and decentralized federated learning applications, algorithms using compressed communication have attracted significant attention. The Error Feedback (EF) is a widely-studied compression framework for convergence with biased compressors such as top-k sparsification. Although various improvements have been obtained in recent years, the theoretical guarantee for EF-type framework is still limited. Previous works either 1) rely on strong assumptions such as bounded gradient/dissimilarity assumptions, thus can not deal with arbitrary data heterogeneity and also slow the convergence speed, or 2) can not enjoy linear speedup in the number of clients. In this work, we propose …

A Software Framework For Translating Onnx Models Onto The Lace-C3a Hardware, Shawn Jones

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Modern computers are powerful, but they are not always efficient enough for small, low power systems like those used on satellites and scientific instruments. To solve this problem, engineers often turn to FPGAs—reconfigurable computer chips that can be customized to run specific tasks much faster and with far less energy than ordinary processors. However, finding the best possible design for an FPGA program is extremely difficult because there are millions of ways a design could be built, and only a small fraction of them actually perform well.

This thesis presents SNOW, a new framework that helps automate the search for …

Auction Consensus Algorithm With Loss Mechanism For Decentralized Task Allocation, Jose Rodriguez, Wenjie Dong, Constantine Tarawneh, Qi Lu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents an Auction-Consensus Algorithm with a Loss Mechanism (ACALM), a decentralized task allocation method for multi-robot systems that enhances the existing Consensus-Based Auction Algorithm (CBAA) by incorporating a novel loss propagation mechanism. In contrast to purely greedy bidding strategies, it enables agents to dynamically update task priorities based on the accumulated loss from previously unsuccessful bids. This extended work reduces globally inefficient allocations caused by early suboptimal decisions. The proposed approach is evaluated through large-scale simulations in thousands of randomized scenarios and swarm sizes ranging from 5 to 120 robots. Compared to existing CBAA and GCAA algorithms, ACALM …

Midair hand gesture recognition plays a crucial role in applications such as sign language recognition and human-computer interaction, particularly for supporting individuals with partial or complete hearing loss. However, recognizing gestures in midair remains challenging due to the rapid and complex nature of hand movements. To address this, noninvasive techniques like surface electromyography (sEMG)—which captures muscle activity through sensors placed on the skin—have gained attention. sEMG provides rich time-series data that reflect both spatial and temporal muscle dynamics. In this study, we propose a deep learning architecture that combines convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to classify …

Owing to their high processing power and operating frequency, FPGAs enable the control algorithm to …

Grp-0176 A Comparative Analysis Of Traditional Virtual Machines And Micro Virtual Machines, Tasnim Akter Onisha Nov 2025

Grp-0176 A Comparative Analysis Of Traditional Virtual Machines And Micro Virtual Machines, Tasnim Akter Onisha

C-Day Computing Showcase

Virtualization technologies form the backbone of modern cloud and serverless platforms, but the balance between performance efficiency and strong isolation remains a key research challenge. Using a comparative literature based methodology, benchmark data from empirical studies are synthesized and normalized across four metrics: startup latency, memory footprint, isolation strength, and scalability. The findings show that traditional VMs such as KVM and Xen provide robust, formally verified isolation but incur higher boot times and memory usage, whereas Micro VMs like Firecracker and Kata Containers achieve lower latency (often < 125 ms) and smaller memory footprints (5–30 MB) while preserving VM-level isolation. Overall, Micro VMs deliver near container responsiveness with VM-grade security, making them suited for serverless and edge environments. As a future direction, this study highlights the need for scalable, formally verified Micro VM architectures for next-generation cloud systems.

C-Day Computing Showcase

The scalability of current quantum networks is limited due to noisy quantum components and high implementation costs, thereby limiting the security advantages that quantum networks provide over their classical counterparts. Quantum Augmented Networks (QuANets) address this by integrating quantum components in classical network infrastructure to improve robustness and end-to-end security. To enable such integration, Quantum Anonymous Notification (QAN) is a method to anonymously inform a receiver of an incoming quantum communication. Therefore, several quantum primitives will serve as core tools, namely, quantum voting, quantum anonymous protocols, quantum secret sharing, etc. However, all current quantum protocols can be compromised in the …

Grp-0275 Graph Attention Network Based Downlink Channel Prediction Using In Frequency Division Duplexed Nextgen Networks, Jui Mhatre Nov 2025

Grp-0275 Graph Attention Network Based Downlink Channel Prediction Using In Frequency Division Duplexed Nextgen Networks, Jui Mhatre

C-Day Computing Showcase

In Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) 5G networks, downlink channel state information (CSI) must be estimated at the user equipment (UE) and fed back to the base station, a process that requires frequent CSI-RS transmission and uplink feedback, resulting in high overhead and energy consumption. This research proposes a novel base-station–centric framework that predicts the downlink channel matrix directly at the gNB, eliminating the need for continuous CSI-RS–based estimation at the UE. By leveraging uplink channel observations, geometric environment features, and learned mappings between uplink and downlink channel relationships, our model reconstructs the downlink MIMO channel with high fidelity. The system …
