Journal of Interpretation

This study explores the perceptions and preferences of healthcare providers who work with Deaf Interpreter-Hearing Interpreter (DI-HI) teams. Healthcare providers depend on interpreters' ability to bridge the communication and cultural gap to assess and treat patients accurately. Although there have been studies on healthcare providers’ perceptions of interpreters to date, none of the research explores the impact of healthcare providers’ perceptions on their experiences with DI-HI teams. To address this, interviews with nine healthcare practitioners were conducted. As part of the interview, participants were shown a video of two interpreting samples to illustrate different approaches to interpreting. Data were analyzed …

We review a number of strategies that encourage people from different groups to work together as equals, so that they can share ideas and perspectives, and co-create new initiatives in collaboration and across group divides. We also provide materials that can help organizations begin to envision how they might assess the effectiveness of their contact programs.

How Novels And Short Stories Are Resources For Learning About The Other, Magnus Haavelsrud Aug 2023

How Novels And Short Stories Are Resources For Learning About The Other, Magnus Haavelsrud

The Journal of Social Encounters

Following a study of fiction written by young, black South African authors, narratives written by highly acclaimed, young authors in Norway are discussed as codifications of generative themes. In Paulo Freire´s pedagogy, thematic investigation of generative themes formed the starting point of conscientization. Initial codification of the themes was then discussed in groups of learners. In their de-codification dialogues learners´ own experiences and insights about the theme resulted in a new codification that was discussed and decodified again. When reflection is coupled with action, this ongoing dialectic allows for change in both the learner and the world in which the …

Criticism Of Parasocial Interaction Theory In Public Relations Research: A Fan Studies Application Through Bts Army Autoethnographies And Situational Theory Of Publics, Emma Carroll Hudson

Theses - ALL

This thesis investigates the reliability and ethics of parasocial interaction theory (PSI) for public relations (PR) practitioners to rely on when creating content or campaigns for fans. Drawing on literature from fan studies and public relations theories, this research proposes situational theory of publics as an alternative theory when researching the motivations and passions of fandom communities. The researcher employs a qualitative multimethod design that integrates individual in-depth interviews (IDIs) with PR practitioners in fan engagement specialist roles and autoethnographic essays written by BTS’ ARMY–a fandom that supports popular K-pop group Bangtan Soyeondan (BTS). The interviews and essays are coded …

Roughly half of Americans get some of their news from social media, and nearly two-thirds get some of their news from search engines. As our modern information gatekeepers, these internet companies bear a special responsibility to consider the impact of their platform and site policies on users’ access to high-quality news sources. They should adopt policies that clear the digital pathway between the public and press by facilitating such access. To that end, the companies must first, address the threshold issue of how best to identify high-quality news sources. This article examines factors that would be useful, drawing from legal …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The troll is one of the most obtrusive and disruptive bad actors on the internet. Unlike other bad actors, the troll interacts on a more personal and intimate level with other internet users. Social media platforms, online communities, comment boards, and chatroom forums provide them with this opportunity. What distinguishes these social provocateurs from other bad actors are their virtual speech acts and online behaviors. These acts aim to incite anger, shame, or frustration in others through the weaponization of words, phrases, and other rhetoric. Online trolls come in all forms and use various speech tactics to insult and demean …

Understanding The Audience In Framing Research: Empirical Evidence From Three Studies Examining Hiv Framing In China, Tianen Chen, Minhao Dai, Nancy Grace Harrington

Faculty Articles

Guided by framing theory, this three-phase mixed-methods study explored (a) how Chinese government-sponsored newspapers frame HIV and (b) framing effects on people’s HIV beliefs. A content analysis of two government-sponsored newspapers and a survey of 210 readers showed discrepancies in frame and frame valence. In-depth follow-up interviews with 15 media and public health experts revealed that the discrepancies were related to people’s attitudes toward the media and beliefs about HIV, which could further be explained by the political environment, media ecology, historical framing, and cultural identities in China. We discuss theoretical implications for framing theory and practical implications for HIV …
