Speech/Language Pathology And Audiology: A Justifiable Anomaly Within A College Of Arts And Sciences?, Fred D. Minifie Aug 1985

Speech/Language Pathology And Audiology: A Justifiable Anomaly Within A College Of Arts And Sciences?, Fred D. Minifie

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay defends the place of speech language pathology and audiology within colleges of arts and sciences by arguing that the discipline’s academic legitimacy derives from its scientific study of human communication rather than its professional training functions. The author traces tensions between broad liberal arts missions and programs perceived as narrowly vocational, noting that clinical training alone cannot justify departmental status in a university setting. Instead, the field’s essential contribution lies in advancing knowledge about normal and disordered communication and in grounding clinical practice in research based understanding. The discussion critiques programs that emphasize service delivery at the expense …

The Student Perspective On Evaluating Teaching Effectiveness, Donald H. Wulff, Ann Q. Staton-Spicer, Carla W. Hess, Jody D. Nyquist

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines student perceptions of teaching evaluation methods by comparing end of course student ratings with the Small Group Instructional Diagnosis procedure. Using data from 140 undergraduates in communication courses, the study analyzes Likert scale responses and open ended comments to assess the perceived importance, uses, and preferred formats of evaluation. Factor analysis indicates that students view teaching evaluation as important but express uncertainty about how results are used and whether instructors act on feedback. Students favored methods that allow written comments, provide opportunities to offer constructive suggestions, and ensure anonymity. They identified weaknesses in end of course ratings, …

In Defense Of Mass Communication As A Liberal Art, Robert K. Tiemens Aug 1985

In Defense Of Mass Communication As A Liberal Art, Robert K. Tiemens

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay defends mass communication as a legitimate component of the liberal arts and responds to criticisms both from outside and within the communication discipline. The author argues that mass communication courses address fundamental questions about the social, political, and cultural influence of media and therefore extend far beyond technical training. The discussion emphasizes that liberal education requires understanding how mediated symbols shape public life and contends that studying the effects, practices, and history of broadcasting aligns directly with liberal arts aims. The essay also notes that accrediting standards already require a strong ratio of liberal arts coursework for mass …

Recovery Of Helminths From Prehistoric Feces: The Cultural Ecology Of Ancient Parasitism, Karl J. Reinhard Aug 1985

Recovery Of Helminths From Prehistoric Feces: The Cultural Ecology Of Ancient Parasitism, Karl J. Reinhard

Karl Reinhard Publications

Several helminth parasites have been recovered from archaeological sites on the Colorado Plateau. These include Ascaris, Trichuris, Enterobius, Moniliformis, and tapeworms in the families Hymenolepidae and Taeniidae. The recovery of these animals demonstrates that cross-temporal: comparison of parasitism between different prehistoric lifestyles is possible. Such comparison might elucidate the effects of changing lifestyle and subsistance pattern on human parasitism.

Desiccated feces recovered from archaelogical deposits were studied. Hunter-gatherer feces were selected from Dust Devil Cave in southeastern Utah. Agriculturalist feces were studied from Antelope House, a cave site in northeastern Arizona, and Salmon Ruins, a Pueblo …
