Ua3/8/6 Report Of The Task-Force On Part-Time Faculty, Wku President's Office-Meredith
WKU Administration Documents
During the 1991 fall semester, President Thomas Meredith appointed a Task Force on Part-Time Faculty at WKU. He requested that the task force conduct a study and make recommendations to the university regarding such issues as part-time faculty compensation and benefits, rates of usage, quality of instruction, orientation and evaluation and administration and budgeting. The study was stimulated, in part, by the fact that the university has in recent years reached historic highs in the use of part-time faculty.
Interpersonal Communication, Paul A. Soukup
Interpersonal Communication, Paul A. Soukup
Communication
Husband and wife, parent and child, priest and penitent, supervisor and employee, the 'happy hour' regulars at the corner pub - almost all of us communicate interpersonally every day. Important decisions can depend on success or failure in carrying out this process. Ultimately, it probably is of far more practical importance than mass media communication. But what do we really know about it?
As the author of this issue points out, only three of the last forty issues of Trends have focussed on topics which can be labelled 'interpersonal communication'. Most of the other's have been devoted to various aspects …

The Spectacularization Of Subjectivity: Media Knowledges, Global Citizenry, And The New World Order, Rhonda Hammer, Peter Mclaren

"Our understanding of contemporary forms of electronically produced media knowledges has been informed by what we perceive as the changing role of the flaneur in the age of late capitalism-one that is as ominous and drastic as the changes which Benjamin perceived. We suggest that the flaneur no longer provides the service of teaching his or her generation about 'their own objective circumstances;' rather, we suggest that the flaneur, as global newscaster, has transmogrified into the afterimage of fascism."
Be Relevant, Careful, And Appropriate: Scary Advice On The Use Of Humor To The Novice Public Speaker, Judythe A. Isserlis
Be Relevant, Careful, And Appropriate: Scary Advice On The Use Of Humor To The Novice Public Speaker, Judythe A. Isserlis
Basic Communication Course Annual
Most contemporary public speaking texts contain some reference to the effective use of humor by public speakers. This advice tends to reflect common assumptions on the role of humor in public speaking and the ability of the novice speaker to incorporate humor in a speech. A review of 27 contemporary texts explores the trend in humor instruction and offers 11 categories which summarize the treatment of humor: (1) theories of humor, (2) rationale for the use of humor, (3) guidelines for the use of humor, (4) sources of humor, (5) humor as a factor of attention, (6) specific humorous techniques …

The Introduction Of A Speech: Do Good Introductions Predict A Good Speech?, Valerie A. Whitecap
Basic Communication Course Annual
Can the introduction predict the success or failure of the speech? Does anything predict a successful speech? First, textbooks were examined to see what is being taught about introductions. Then the results of the first speeches given by freshmen and sophomores in a hybrid communication course were studied to see if successful introductions predicted successful speeches. Finally, some other predictors to speech success are discussed, including public speaking experience and the verbality of the student's chosen major.
This comparison of the introduction of the speech and the subsequent grade on the speech was done as a preliminary "think piece," so …

Perceived Parental Communication And Adolescent Self-Esteem: Predictors Of Academic Performance And Drop-Out Rates, Linda Lanza-Kaduce, Lynne M. Webb
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Drawing on the coordinated-management-of-meaning perspective, this study probes whether adolescents’ perceptions of parental communication forecast two major risk factors for dropping out of high school: low academic achievement and chronic absenteeism. Survey data were collected from students (enrolled in an alternative vocational high school in the southeastern United States. Participants rated how often mothers and fathers expressed three message families—control/autonomy, emotional support, and shared participation—while a 12-item semantic-differential scale captured self-esteem dimensions (efficacy, positive attributes, power). Official school records supplied GPA-to-ability ratios and absence counts. Separate path analyses for males and females revealed modest, gender-specific patterns: for boys, perceived maternal …
Liberality In The Arts: A Call For Academic Integrity In The Training Of Young Artists, Gerald Ratliff
Liberality In The Arts: A Call For Academic Integrity In The Training Of Young Artists, Gerald Ratliff
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article calls for a renewed commitment to liberal arts breadth in educating young artists. Arguing that studio centered traditions and artist to artist apprenticeship leave critical gaps, it advocates a classroom based model that integrates communication, humanities, languages, mathematics, social and natural sciences. Such breadth, it claims, sharpens critical insight, enriches individual perspectives, and expands artistic vision. The article outlines quality instruction that pairs practicing artists with academic scholars, leverages technology, and fosters analytical discourse. It proposes curricula that blend liberal studies with tutorials, artistic internships, and experiential learning in real world settings. Evaluation strategies should combine classroom performance, …

A Qualitative Study Of The Communicative Acts Involved In The Coming Out Process Of Male Homosexuals, Heidi Lynn Hinds
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The intent with this qualitative study was to explore the communicative acts involved in the coming out process of male homosexuals. The participants in this study were 10, male, selfidentified homosexuals living in Black Hawk County, Iowa. The participants ranged in age from 21 to 40, and also differed in how long they had been involved in the coming out process. The participants were selected through personal encounters or referral by other individuals. Two research questions were posed. The first question posed was, "What communication is involved in the coming out process of male homosexuals?" The second question posed was, …
