WKU Administration Documents

Western Kentucky is a good university essentially trapped in time and therefore unable to change significantly. Until these constraints are eliminated or modified, the University will not be able to effectively address major issues of focus, enrollment, organization, personnel, curriculum, governance, athletics, planning and increased public and private support. Values, Affect And Risk Perception, Kurt Neuwirth, Sharon Dunwoody, Robert J. Griffin Nov 1997

Values, Affect And Risk Perception, Kurt Neuwirth, Sharon Dunwoody, Robert J. Griffin

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Three pilot studies provided data exploring the roles of values, threats to these selfsame values and emotions in the perception of risk. Results indicate that judgements about risk are associated with a wide variety of values and perceived threats to values. The findings also revealed that the negative emotions such as sadness, worry, anger, disgust, helplessness and uncertainty were significantly related to risk perception. The authors' discussion advances the view that the range of topics considered appropriate to risk communication can be extended to the area of public opinion and rhetorical studies.

The Press And Citizen Participation: A Content Analysis, Lisa Pelstring, James Shanahan, Ben Perry

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

We conducted a content analysis of regional New York State newspapers to assess media coverage of the Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) deer management program. The goal of this analysis was to ascertain media depiction of DEC’s deer management program during the 1985-97 time period. Specifically, this research examines how deer management issues were portrayed both prior to and after implementation of a DEC public participation program (the Citizen Task Force [CTF] process) to determine if deer management issues received more favorable coverage after CTFs were implemented.
