"In Heaven": Christian Couples' Experiences Of Pregnancy Loss, Grace Ellen Peters
"In Heaven": Christian Couples' Experiences Of Pregnancy Loss, Grace Ellen Peters
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how young, married, heterosexual Christian couples talk about and make sense of pregnancy loss, specifically loss before the twentieth week. Studies of pregnancy loss often focus on individual differences in response to pregnancy loss, but this research engages a shared, relational notion of pregnancy loss. Furthermore, this project focuses on Christianity as a tool for making sense of pregnancy loss, not simply a demographic characteristic. I conducted six open-ended interviews with two couples, with one interview together and an individual follow-up interview with each spouse. Following the interviews, I analyzed and interpreted the interview transcripts for symbols …

Eliciting Behavior From Interactive Narratives: Isolating The Role Of Agency In Connecting With And Modeling Characters, Francesca R. Dillman, Ryan Rogers, Lisa Barnard
Eliciting Behavior From Interactive Narratives: Isolating The Role Of Agency In Connecting With And Modeling Characters, Francesca R. Dillman, Ryan Rogers, Lisa Barnard
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
A key component differentiating interactive storytelling from non-interactive media is agency, or control over character choices. A series of experiments show that providing agency over a character increased the user-character connection, which then increased engagement in a character-consistent charitable act. Findings were observed in technologically simple online narratives that controlled for navigation/controller differences, graphics, sounds, lengthy play, and avatar customization. Effects emerged even though users did not practice these acts by making their character behave charitably. Findings were robust across happy and unfortunate endings and across first-, second-, and third-person narrative perspectives. Findings suggest promise for developing inexpensive ‘‘storygames’’ to …

The Strategies And Tactics Used To Create A Successful Personal Brand: The Implications For Career Development In Public Relations, Jane Redmond
Journalism
With the technology and access to information that is available in today’s day and age, people are learning to become more cautious in how they are presenting themselves. In a professional sense, it is important that people are aware of the image they portray and that they are doing so in a consistent manner. Professionals can do this by defining their own personal brand in order to benefit their career and demonstrate who they are as an individual in a consistent manner. This project will study how one can be effective in creating their own personal brand and what strategies …

Applying The Risk Information Seeking And Processing Model To The Risk Of Sexual Aggression Among Females Aged 18 - 25: Advertising Implications, Gregory J. Calhoun, James Pokrywczynski, Robert J. Griffin
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
While a plethora of researchers have studied risk factors related to sexual violence, few studies have explored what differences account for the various ways women seek and process information about sexual violence. This study seeks to accomplish this by applying the Risk Information Seeking and Processing model (RISP) to the risk of sexual aggression among young females (18-25). RISP has been utilized to effectively explore the individual traits that influence how people seek and process risk information in a number of contexts. The results from a national survey of females show that Informational Subjective Norms (the woman's perceived social pressures …
The Chosen One: A Q-Method Analysis Of The “Harry Potter” Phenomenon, Cindy Phippen
The Chosen One: A Q-Method Analysis Of The “Harry Potter” Phenomenon, Cindy Phippen
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines how pop culture fandoms are formed, based on five communications theories: Escapism, Mood Management, Parasocial Relationships, Identification, and Social Capital. The researcher examined the Harry Potter fandom specifically because of its global pervasiveness. Using Q Methodology, 47 respondents fell into one of four categories: Relationship Experts, Happy Introverts, Identifying Isolationists, and Isolated Self-regulators. Relationship Experts like Harry Potter because of parasocial relationships with the characters as well as the story's capacity for escapism, and Happy Introverts focus on liking Harry Potter for their own enjoyment (not that of others) and mood management. Identifying Isolationists like Harry Potter …

It's Not Just A Leave, Genesis L. Montalvo
First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience
In this piece, the author sets out to explore the first-generation college identity through a gothic lens. In the early stages of this project, Montalvo had considered doing research on narratives from other first-gen college students as a way to trace the uncanny and the abject in their experiences. However, as she began reflecting on her own personal history, she realized that in a matter of only two years she had already experienced moments of distance, uncanniness, and confusion, which are recorded here. In presenting these installments in non-chronological order, Montalvo intends to insert a gothic element of disorder, which …

Born Naked By Farley Mowat, Ted Geier
Born Naked By Farley Mowat, Ted Geier
The Goose
Farley Mowat's charming childhood memoir covers the usual Mowat terrain: riotous humour, humble reverence, and a meticulous accounting of the little things that make life--all life--dear to us. Mowat's work deserves regular attention in animal studies and environmental literary studies. His autobiographical techniques, as this review suggests, can be both assets and occasional impediments. But there is no replacing or replicating a Farley Mowat, and Born Naked deserves to be read immediately and repeatedly as one of the lasting legacies of a long life, well-lived.
