A Response To White, Erin Conner Feb 2016

A Response To White, Erin Conner

Speaker & Gavel

If someone were to have asked me in the spring of 2008 if I thought that I was providing an honest and reliable interpretation of my communication analysis model, I would have said yes. Several months removed from the speech community, my answer remains the same. This letter is my response to Dr. Leah White‘s criticisms of my interpretation of I Lose, Therefore I Think: A Search for Contemplation Amid Wars of Push-Button Glare by Shuen-shing Lee—the article that served as my communication analysis model (Conner, 2008). I hope that this letter provides a more in-depth justification of my interpretation. …

Distortion In The Description Of Scholarly Research Methods In Competitive Forensics, Leah White Feb 2016

Distortion In The Description Of Scholarly Research Methods In Competitive Forensics, Leah White

Speaker & Gavel

Specifically, in this article I am concerned with our expectations regarding how students select and apply "methods" to their chosen topics. I argue that due to artificial expectations dictated by the unwritten rules of the event, students are not able to engage in accurate application of their selected scholarly articles. I will develop this argument by examining four communication analysis speeches presented in final rounds at the AFA-NIET to determine how accurately these students explain and represent their selected scholarship. I conclude the essay by offering suggestions for how we can encourage students to incorporate rhetorical theory into speeches in …

Superman And Wonder Woman: French Champions For Hiv/Aids Prevention Of Failed Aids Campaign?, Stephen M. Croucher, Terry L. Rentner Feb 2016

Superman And Wonder Woman: French Champions For Hiv/Aids Prevention Of Failed Aids Campaign?, Stephen M. Croucher, Terry L. Rentner

Speaker & Gavel

In 2004, the French government sponsored an AIDS/HIV prevention campaign; AIDES.ORG using photos of AIDS infected Superman and Wonder Woman to persuade adolescents to adopt preventative behaviors. This article asserts campaign organizers cancelled the campaign because it failed to provide audience efficacy and incorrectly manipulated fear in its campaign messages. Moreover, this article compares the AIDES.ORG campaign to other AIDS/HIV campaigns and argues effective health communication campaigns must provide efficacy to facilitate adoption of desired preventative behaviors. The Social Norms Approach is offered as an alternative method for developing effective health communication campaigns.

Designing Prenatal M-Health Interventions Through Transmigrants Reflection On Their Pregnancy Ecology, Hana Aljaberi Feb 2016

Designing Prenatal M-Health Interventions Through Transmigrants Reflection On Their Pregnancy Ecology, Hana Aljaberi

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation presents the findings from three participatory focus group and co-design sessions with Caribbean transmigrant women in the United States. Informed by their focus group discussions regarding their pregnancy experiences in the United States, the participants produced design ideas that reflected on physical, emotional, informational and social gap themes. The purpose of this study was to understand the challenges affecting the women’s prenatal wellbeing practices, and to conceive a set of recommendations and opportunities for mHealth technology design to assist with prenatal preventative care and management. The study uses the theoretical concept of pregnancy ecology to identify gaps in …

Peluang Dan Tantangan Undang-Undang Desa Dalam Upaya Demokratisasi Tata Kelola Sumber Daya Alam Desa: Perspektif Agraria Kritis, Mohamad Shohibuddin

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Law Number 6 of 2014 on Village—apart from its political contribution in democratizing statevillage relation—has a fundamental limitation on natural resource issues in the village in the light of agrarian and ecological crises. This Law offers a minor elaboration on natural resource issues and provides limited authority to the village on this field, while no reference is made to the problem of inequality in community’s access to local natural resources. Confronted with such structural challenges, it is argued that “struggle for village autonomy” will hardly lead to significant social transformation without involving attempts to establish just and sustainable natural resource …

Media Literacy Education: A Media Literacy Campaign On The Social Significance Of Media Literacy And Its Educational Need, Agnes Poliquin Jan 2016

Media Literacy Education: A Media Literacy Campaign On The Social Significance Of Media Literacy And Its Educational Need, Agnes Poliquin

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Research has shown that the amount of media that today’s youth is exposed to continues to rise dramatically each year. Averaging 11 hours a day, youth are encountering new challenges like miscommunication and risking becoming a less productive citizen by the time they finish secondary school. Media literacy is a tool that combats this overexposure of media to educate, create and develop ways youth can combat this influence of mass media messages. This project promotes media literacy education, based in the use of the Jon Piaget’s constructivist learning theory and George Gerbner’s cultivation theory. The project is a media literacy …

Antecedents Of Cross-Cultural Adaptation Stress In Short-Term International Assignments, Kerri Anne Crowne, Robert L. Engle

Organization Management Journal

This study examines the role of cultural intelligence, perceived language fluency, and number of previous international experiences during a short-term international community service project in a foreign country. Based on a sample of 171 undergraduate and graduate students, the findings suggest that motivational cultural intelligence significantly impacted lowering cross-cultural adaptation stress levels experiences during short-term trips, while perceived language ability significantly increased stress levels. In addition, the control variables of age and gender were also found to significantly impact stress levels. Implications for research and practice are discussed

Sibling Research In Communication: 1995-2015, Kristen Cvancara Jan 2016

Sibling Research In Communication: 1995-2015, Kristen Cvancara

Communication Studies Department Publications

During the years of 1995-2015, sibling communication received the least attention among the prominent family relationships studied in the discipline, resulting in sibling research as a topic to be semi-isolated and without a strong synthesis of knowledge across investigations. This white paper examines the discipline contribution to the understanding of sibling communication in these decades. Over 40 journal articles were reviewed and initially sorted into pro-social (constructive) or anti-social (destructive) communication categories. Two sub-categories were identified in the pro-social literature (sibling closeness - 18 studies; relationship maintenance - 14 studies) and two in the anti-social literature (verbal aggression - 5 …
