Report From The National Lgbtq Students Of Color Summit, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz Jan 2005

Report From The National Lgbtq Students Of Color Summit, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

I've always imagined finding a space where gender is not assumed, where women are undeniably and understandably attracted to each other, and where men embrace without fear. I found this space at the National Summit for LGBTQ Students of Color on the day of my 22nd birthday, January 15th, 2005. Over two nights and three days, the United States Student Association hosted a national summit filled with grassroots organizing workshops, "how-tos" for your campus, methods on how to challenge homophobia from other student groups while still building alliances, and late night dialogues on art and freedom of expression.

A Pilot Study To Determine Gender Differences In The Detection Of Deception: Accuracy, Cues, And Skepticism, Randal B. Jarvis Jan 2005

A Pilot Study To Determine Gender Differences In The Detection Of Deception: Accuracy, Cues, And Skepticism, Randal B. Jarvis

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

How accurately people use verbal and nonverbal cues to detect deception appears to be a function of a skeptical orientation toward the truthfulness of the subject. In previous studies, some differences in gender and the detection of deception are cited, but most studies are inconclusive about whether such differences exist. In the present study, university students are asked to judge brief interviews of suspects in a mock crime criminal investigation. Suspects are either "guilty" or "not guilty" in the mock crime scenario. "Guilty" suspects include two persons who are present at the time of the mock crime. A third person, …

Are Murders Equal In The Eyes Of The Media?: A Study Of Race, Gender, Class And Quality Of Coverage, Tobie Marie Blanchard Jan 2005

Are Murders Equal In The Eyes Of The Media?: A Study Of Race, Gender, Class And Quality Of Coverage, Tobie Marie Blanchard

LSU Master's Theses

Crime news is an important component of local news. A literature review suggested that the media’s coverage of crime news can reveal vital information about media routines and biases. The main issue in this study is race and the media. The subtext of crime news and how the media cover different races when dealing with crime can speak to the larger issues of race and the media. The primary focus of this study was to examine how the media cover victims of murder, but more specifically to investigate any differences that may exist in how they cover White and Black …

"The Ship Has Gone Down With The Captain" : A Study Of The Framing Of Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Commission (Atsic) Chairman Geoff Clark In The Australian, Lauren Heinritz Jan 2005

"The Ship Has Gone Down With The Captain" : A Study Of The Framing Of Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Commission (Atsic) Chairman Geoff Clark In The Australian, Lauren Heinritz

Theses : Honours

This study looks at the frames used in the Australian newspaper's coverage of Indigenous leader Geoff Clark, from his re-election as chairman of the Aboriginal and Tones Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) at the end of 2002 until the agency's demise in March 2004, and finds two divergent ways of reporting Indigenous issues. In summary, the Geoff Clark case study highlights the ideological divide between proponents of the so-called "tights-based agenda" in Indigenous affairs and those that favour the "responsibilities-based" agenda. When established in 1990, ATSIC was viewed as a significant step towards Indigenous self-determination. With official federal government policy shifting …

Cameras In Court: A Utilitarian Ethical Approach, Kylie L. Greene Jan 2005

Cameras In Court: A Utilitarian Ethical Approach, Kylie L. Greene

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Cameras in Court: A Utilitarian Ethical Approach is a theoretical discussion that establishes ethical guidelines for journalists and judges concerning cameras in court. Using utilitarian and deontological ethics the research will show that the current professional codes for journalists and judges are not sufficient and that a more utilitarian approach is necessary. Although still cameras were allowed in courtrooms in the early 1900s, it was the 1995 trial of football star O.J. Simpson that many say forever changed the way journalists, judges, and the public viewed cameras in court. Today, many judges are restricting camera access in high-profile cases, while …
