Religion And Topoi In The News: An Analysis Of The “Unsecular Media” Hypothesis, Rick Clifton Moore Jan 2003

Religion And Topoi In The News: An Analysis Of The “Unsecular Media” Hypothesis, Rick Clifton Moore

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mark Silk has proposed in Unsecular Media that journalists operate with a limited series of topoi and that these are borrowed from religion. Silk thus claims when journalists write about religion, they do so in a way that ultimately supports religious values. In this study, I apply topic analysis to recent news coverage of Jesse Jackson’s marital infidelity to determine the extent to which the topos of hypocrisy was employed and whether this employment supported or challenged a religious (as opposed to secular) worldview.

Connecting Community And School: A Systems Approach, Nichole Kea Zumbach Johnson Jan 2003

Connecting Community And School: A Systems Approach, Nichole Kea Zumbach Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Making community and school connections is vital as the nation experiences an economic downturn. Financial consideration and collaborative projects are extremely important when beginning a community/school project. However, the common aspect running through any community/school project is communication. The level of communication that must exist for the system to be successful is incredible. This is not an analysis of one theory; instead it is a testament to how communication studies must be utilized, in every aspect, to make the system function as efficiently as possible. Systems theorists present a fitting outline to determine challenges that exist when trying to create …

Prayer As Interpersonal Coping In The Lives Of Mothers With Hiv, E. James Baesler, Valerian J. Derlega, Barbara A. Winstead, Anita Barbee Jan 2003

Prayer As Interpersonal Coping In The Lives Of Mothers With Hiv, E. James Baesler, Valerian J. Derlega, Barbara A. Winstead, Anita Barbee

Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

The spirituality of 22 mothers diagnosed with HIV was explored through face-to-face interviews and revealed that 95% of the mothers pray. Active prayers (e.g., talking to God by adoring, thanking, confessing, and supplicating) were more frequently reported than receptive prayers (e.g., quietly listening to God, being open, surrendering). Supplicatory or petitionary prayers for help and health were the most frequent type of prayer, and adoration was the least frequent. The majority of mothers in the sample perceived prayer as a positive coping mechanism associated with outcomes such as: support, positive attitude/affect, and peace. Overall, results supported expanding the boundary conditions …
