Political Interest And News Media Literacy Among University Students: Case Of The U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (2023), Nhat Anh Nguyen, Ngoc Thuy Duong Le

Journal of Media Literacy Education Pre-Prints

In today’s complex media environment, the ability to critically evaluate news plays an essential role in shaping political interest, especially among youth. Although media literacy has been extensively investigated in relation to civic outcomes, the particular link between news media literacy (NML) and political interest is still little known. This paper investigates this link among Vietnamese university students by means of the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership as a prominent foreign policy instance. Drawing on Potter’s (2004) cognitive model and Maksl et al.'s (2015) NML scale, this study primarily employs a quantitative approach using survey data (N = 410), complemented by …

Undergraduate Student Perceptions Of Student-Faculty Interactions In Relation To Academic Anxiety In An Online Learning Environment, Alexandria Ward Aug 2026

Undergraduate Student Perceptions Of Student-Faculty Interactions In Relation To Academic Anxiety In An Online Learning Environment, Alexandria Ward

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The expansion of online learning in higher education, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, has significantly reshaped student experiences and communication practices. While existing research has explored online learning environments, student engagement, and mental health, there remains a gap in understanding how undergraduate students perceive student-faculty interactions in online learning environments and how these interactions impact academic anxiety. Guided by Transactional Distance Theory, which emphasizes dialogue, structure, and learner autonomy, this qualitative phenomenological study addressed three research questions: how students describe their experiences with faculty interactions in online learning environments in relation to academic anxiety, what aspects of communication contribute to …

Gender Inequality In The South Korean Workplace : Structural Barriers, Cultural Frames, And Conflicted Responses, Seorin Stella Bak Aug 2026

Gender Inequality In The South Korean Workplace : Structural Barriers, Cultural Frames, And Conflicted Responses, Seorin Stella Bak

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Abstract

Drawing on theories of structural inequality, neoliberal ideology, and feminist resistance, the study applies an interdisciplinary framework from media, culture, and communication studies to analyze the mechanisms that sustain gendered disparities in the Korean labor market. South Korea holds the distinction of having the widest gender wage gap among all OECD nations for 30 consecutive years and has ranked last on The Economist's Glass Ceiling Index for eight consecutive years. The World Economic Forum's 2024 Global Gender Gap Report explains that South Korea ranks 94th out of 146 countries (score: 0.696), with a near-perfect score in educational attainment (0.98) …

JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA

The Indonesian government program Free Nutritious Meal, locally abbreviated as MBG, launched in early 2025, has generated significant public controversy. Data from the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF) indicate that, as of August 2025, approximately 4,000 students across Indonesia had reportedly suffered food poisoning associated with the program. This situation has fueled widespread public concern and contributed to declining trust in government. This study aims to analyze communication networks surrounding the MBG on the social media platform X. This study draws on Trust and Distrust Theory and employs a Social Network Analysis (SNA) approach to examine how …

“Now Serving… Not Quite Yet”: Improving Waiting Room Experience Through Consistent Communication In The Emergency Department, Juan Carlos Serrato

Master's Projects and Capstones

Context: The quality improvement project was implemented in the front-end microsystem of a 36-bed emergency department (ED) in a non-profit, Magnet-designated California hospital. Problem: Communication with non-roomed patients at Hospital X was inconsistent, contributing to dissatisfaction. In June 2026, Press Ganey reported that 61.4% of patients felt they were informed about delays. Baseline observation identified gaps in staff explanations of estimated wait times, next steps in care, and opportunities to ask questions. Intervention: A 30-day pilot provided staff education on the AIDET communication framework through formal in-service education and daily huddles. Patient-facing materials explained the ED process …

Everything I Learned About Teacher Noticing I Learned From Yoga Teacher Training, Grace Giorgio

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

The following activity promotes teacher noticing as a pedagogical tool for teachers in training, with a focus on the public speaking classroom. Many students enter the public speaking classroom filled with performance anxiety and fears of how their peers will perceive them. When a teacher can tap into these concerns via by noticing how students are reacting in the moment, they can assuage those anxieties and fears. Hence, teaching instructors effective teacher noticing in teacher training improves the classroom experience for teachers and students alike.

The Chameleon Experience: Queer Identity, Mental Health, And Transformation, Cameron Penny Aug 2026

The Chameleon Experience: Queer Identity, Mental Health, And Transformation, Cameron Penny

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

In this autoethnographic piece, I examine the correlation between queer identity and mental health through reflective analysis of my own experiences within a Western socio-cultural setting. I expand external perspectives on the queer experience by highlighting the normalization of queer prejudice and its adverse impact on self-image. I share how the religious praxis of Catholicism enforces binary conformity by promoting dichotomous thinking that simultaneously constricts queer expression and subjugates implicit biases. In tandem, I utilize autoethnography as my medium because it provides a unique outlet to raise awareness for chronically stigmatized identities by centering marginalized voices (Atay, 2011; Chavez, 2013). …

Best Practices And An Agenda For Research In Benefits Communication, Kristi Egbert, Anne Kerber Aug 2026

Best Practices And An Agenda For Research In Benefits Communication, Kristi Egbert, Anne Kerber

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

Benefits communication is information an employer/organization provides to employees about the types of benefit plans offered and information about them (i.e., health insurance, retirement, vacation time). Despite its importance to jobs across all sectors of the workforce, there is a dearth of current academic research regarding benefits communication. This paper defines benefits communication, examines its impact on organizations and workers, and explores existing research on best practices. Findings underscore the complexity of benefits material and emphasize the need for simpler and clearer language, employee-preferred formats, and adequate time for employees to review information and receive guidance from a knowledgeable source. …

State Of The World: Presidential Rhetoric At The United Nations, Jason A. Edwards, Zoe Hess Carney, Kory Hoyt Aug 2026

State Of The World: Presidential Rhetoric At The United Nations, Jason A. Edwards, Zoe Hess Carney, Kory Hoyt

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

In 1982, President Reagan spoke to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for the first time. In doing so, Reagan established a presidential tradition that, we argue, created a new genre of presidential rhetoric. Like the State of the Union speech, presidents, in this address, outline their vision for U.S. foreign policy and global politics for the coming year. Specifically, presidents mediate on the history and values of the United Nations, assess the current state of global affairs, and offer policy recommendations to deal with those issues. Examining presidential rhetoric at the United Nations offers a heuristic to understand U.S. …

How Do Mainstream Newspapers In Sweden And The United Kingdom Compare In Their Framing Of 2024-2025 Gang Violence As A “Security Threat” Linked To Migration?, Ria Vlachos

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

This project will look at how the media portrays the relationship between gang violence and migration during the 2024-2025 time period. Sweden will be the primary case study, and it will see how the domestic Swedish newspapers and the Uk outlets explain the “security threats” through their reporting. This topic is of significant social and scientific importance because the way the media portrays things can shape the publics attitudes and give justification to certain actions/policy changes. This project is feasible as its going to be a comparative paper of a sample of newspapers from both sides. I will explore the …

Public Blame And Prevention Preferences Following K-12 School Shootings: Mean World Beliefs And Doomscrolling, Jennifer L. Lemanski, Gordon A. Crews

Communication Faculty Publications

This study examines how routine digital media use shapes public blame attribution and prevention preferences following K-12 school shootings. Drawing on Mean World Syndrome (MWS) and research on doomscrolling, the study investigates whether habitual exposure to threatening and sensationalized content is associated with patterns of digital engagement and interpretations of responsibility for school shooting events. Using a nationwide survey of U.S. adults (N = 540), the study measured MWS, doomscrolling tendencies, political orientation, blame attribution, and engagement behaviors such as seeking information, sharing, and commenting on school violence–related content. Canonical correlation analyses indicate that higher levels of MWS and doomscrolling …

Dialogic Communication Ethics As A Hopeful Response To Artificial Intelligence, Kristen Haldeman Aug 2026

Dialogic Communication Ethics As A Hopeful Response To Artificial Intelligence, Kristen Haldeman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within the past five years, a new technology has dominated modern culture: artificial intelligence. With a multiplicity of ways to respond to this new environment, this dissertation situates a response to artificial intelligence by combining the media ecology and communication ethics perspectives. Media ecology explores historical roots and biases of technology to learn about their influence of humanity. A dialogic communication ethics seeks to find an opening for hope to emerge. Hope, grounded in the works of Jacques Ellul and the Christian tradition, offers a new rhetorical perspective by shifting focus away from technology and to our neighbor.

Empathetic Political Communication As The Political Identity Of Female Legislators: A Phenomenological Study In The Surabaya City Dprd, Nurannafi Farni Syam Maella, Farida Farida, Herlina Harsono Njoto, Hamizah Sahharon, Vinna Amalia

JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA

Politics has long been constructed as a masculine arena dominated by discourses of power, authority, and instrumental rationality. The presence of female legislators disrupts this hegemony by foregrounding empathetic modes of political communication that emphasize inclusivity, relational engagement, and responsiveness to social realities. These communicative practices not only contest dominant masculine norms in political discourse but also expand deliberative spaces and support the formulation of gender-responsive public policies. Accordingly, this study examines how female legislators in the Surabaya Legislative Council construct and enact empathetic political communication as a core expression of their political identity. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, this …

How Philip K. Dick Used The Unreliable Narrator To Transport Unwitting Acolytes, Michael Barros, Jordi Smith Aug 2026

How Philip K. Dick Used The Unreliable Narrator To Transport Unwitting Acolytes, Michael Barros, Jordi Smith

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

This essay examines the use of the unreliable narrator to transport the reader into narrative worlds, specifically in Philip K. Dick's fiction. By exploring the phenomenon of narrative transportation and the role of emotions in engagement with fiction, we argue that Dick's use of the unreliable narrator significantly engages and transports readers into his narrative worlds. Subsequently, we contend that his belief in the fundamental reality of those worlds is effectively positioning himself as a gatekeeper and mediator between the narrative world and the real world, which sets him, in his mind, as a prophet, using fiction as a tool …

The Startup: Critical Perspectives On Technology Entrepreneurship And Digital Labor, Kochav Koren

All Duquesne Faculty Scholarship

Communication and media studies are rapidly reshaped by socio-technological forces within the framework of informational capitalism, where startups emerge as key drivers of the global creative economy. This study critically examines the global startup movement through political economy, classical sociology, and Southern perspectives to assess whether digital entrepreneurship fosters genuine, decentralized innovation or perpetuates speculative financialization and labor precarity. Employing a multi-layered theoretical framework—including Schumpeterian creative destruction, Marxist commodity fetishism, and Weberian charismatic authority—and qualitative fieldwork across North and Latin American tech hubs, the analysis reveals startups as network enterprises that both disrupt markets and reproduce structural inequalities. The findings …
