Preparing For Change: Management Concepts For The Future—Ideas From Supermanaging By Brown And Weiner, Ladonna Mcmurray Geddes

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article reviews concepts from Brown and Weiner’s Supermanaging and considers their application to communication administration in higher education. The discussion highlights rapid social and technological change, the growth of continuing education, and shifting demographics, all of which demand flexible and future-oriented management. Key ideas include environmental scanning, “error-embracing” leadership, and the importance of marketing strategies for organizational survival. Middle managers are urged to redefine their roles by fostering self-motivating environments, networking, anticipating issues, and demonstrating unique contributions. The article also stresses the significance of social contracts, balancing responsibilities to employees, clients, communities, and funding agencies. Applying these concepts to …

Department Chair As Change Agent, John I. Sisco Apr 1987

Department Chair As Change Agent, John I. Sisco

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the role of the department chair as a catalyst for change within academic institutions. It considers the origins of chairs—whether promoted internally, recruited from other institutions, or brought in with prior administrative experience—and how these backgrounds shape their effectiveness. The discussion distinguishes between changes typically sought by administration, such as reorganizing programs for efficiency or shifting institutional identity toward research, and those sought by faculty, including greater resources and improved recognition of departmental contributions. Emphasis is placed on setting realistic, short-term goals that engage all faculty members, thereby building momentum and visibility for the department. The article …

The Department Chair As An Agent Of Change, Edward L. Mcglone Apr 1987

The Department Chair As An Agent Of Change, Edward L. Mcglone

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay explores the department chair’s role as an agent of change within academic institutions. It examines the nature of organizational change, highlighting that it often occurs when departments themselves are ready rather than when leaders desire it. The discussion reviews the complex and varied expectations of the chair’s position, dispelling myths about charisma, workaholism, and “honeymoon” periods as prerequisites for effectiveness. Instead, effective leadership is described as grounded in intelligence, interpersonal skill, humor, and the ability to cultivate a supportive environment. The essay emphasizes that chairs cannot enact change unilaterally but must recognize readiness, build consensus, and create conditions …

So You Want To Be An Administrator? Be Prepared For Change, Richard W. Platt Oct 1986

So You Want To Be An Administrator? Be Prepared For Change, Richard W. Platt

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This reflective case study explores the dynamics of institutional and personal change through the author’s experience as a department and divisional chair at a small private liberal arts college. The narrative traces the evolution of administrative responsibility amid shifting institutional structures, financial constraints, and demographic transformation in higher education during the late twentieth century. The analysis highlights how external forces—such as economic pressures, federal funding fluctuations, and changing student populations—interact with internal developments in curriculum design, faculty composition, and organizational restructuring. Central to the argument is the necessity for adaptability: effective administration requires balancing planning and leadership within fluid systems …

Communication Arts And Sciences In Transition, Douglas M. Trank, Sanuel L. Becker, Barbara Hall

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This study presents a comprehensive appraisal of the state of communication arts and sciences departments in U.S. higher education during the mid-1980s. Drawing on survey data from 373 institutions, the research examines departmental organization, faculty demographics, curricular emphases, and budgetary trends. Findings reveal a field in ongoing transition, marked by diverse departmental structures and naming conventions, frequent reorganizations, and the separation of traditional areas such as theatre, mass communication, and speech pathology into independent units. Faculty data indicate modest levels of tenure and continuing gender disparities, though representation of women and minorities is increasing. Salary levels and resource distributions vary …

Post-Tenure Faculty Development: Where Is The Adventure?, Michael R. Moore Apr 1986

Post-Tenure Faculty Development: Where Is The Adventure?, Michael R. Moore

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article addresses the challenge of sustaining professional growth among tenured faculty, distinguishing burnout from a more pervasive condition of being left out in the face of rapid disciplinary and institutional change. Using the metaphor of adventure, the argument contends that some experienced faculty resist new teaching methods, technology adoption, and research engagement not due to exhaustion but due to insufficient preparation for change and fear of risk. The discussion outlines a developmental role for department chairs that combines long term planning with individualized support. Key practices include collaboratively setting appropriate goals aligned with departmental needs, identifying resources and release …

An Exploratory Study Of Organizational Trust & Its Multiple Dimensions: A Case Study Of General Motors, Kerry Hart

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Over 1700 employees of the General Motors Corporation defined trust and described personal work experiences that affected their trust toward the organization. These employee comments were factor analyzed to determine the dimensions of organizational trust. An instrument was developed from employee comments to measure the level of trust in a GM location. With the level of trust quantified, the demographic effects on trust and the relationship between trust and management's communication effectiveness were investigated.

This approach provided new knowledge of trust in an industrial environment. Three dimensions of organizational trust were identified: Openness/Congruity, Shared Values, and Autonomy/Feedback. Age, length of …

In 1982 the Health Care Finance Administration mandated changes in the mechanism and financing of the End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Program by the provisions of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. This study analyzes a large non-profit dialysis program and how its decision making practices were affected 2 by the change in Medicare laws. Application of decision theory in health care provides a basis for this study on the affects of crisis on decision making.
