The Power Fantastic: How Genre Expectations Mediate Authority, Angela Rose Cox Dec 2016

The Power Fantastic: How Genre Expectations Mediate Authority, Angela Rose Cox

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation reconciles academic and popular uses of the term genre, concluding that genre is a transmedial, mutable, associative, recognized system regulated through tacit understandings of prestige and power in a given Social space. The study employs a digital humanities method (dependent on digitally facilitated data analysis), conducting descriptive discourse analysis on collected online discussions from fan spaces concerning the fantasy genre and matters related to fantasy. In this way, I construct an image of the fantasy genre, and genre in general, as a multimodal space in which material freely passes between traditional and new media and participants actively negotiate …

Social Media: The Impact Of Imagery And Engagement In Athletic Social Media, Michael W. Eldridge

Communication Theses - Archive

As the athletic communication field enhances its practices on social media in order to have the highest reach, the impact of visual content and its role in increasing social media engagement cannot be overstated. This study explores social media patterns, specifically the use of visual content within professional sports, and how the role of semiotics influences the viewer. As social media moves forward in athletics, the practice of two-way communication has become vital. This study of social media across the NFL provides insight on specific content that engages sports fans. Findings suggest both the type of content and the timing …

Hashtag Recommendation With Topical Attention-Based Lstm, Yang Li, Ting Liu, Jing Jiang, Liang Zhang Dec 2016

Hashtag Recommendation With Topical Attention-Based Lstm, Yang Li, Ting Liu, Jing Jiang, Liang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Microblogging services allow users to create hashtags to categorize their posts. In recent years, the task of recommending hashtags for microblogs has been given increasing attention. However, most of existing methods depend on hand-crafted features. Motivated by the successful use oflong short-term memory (LSTM) for many natural language processing tasks, in this paper, weadopt LSTM to learn the representation of a microblog post. Observing that hashtags indicatethe primary topics of microblog posts, we propose a novel attention-based LSTM model whichincorporates topic modeling into the LSTM architecture through an attention mechanism. Weevaluate our model using a large real-world dataset. Experimental results show that …

"Let Me Tell You What I See" Creating A Culturally Relevant Arts Based Education Through The Use Of Photography And Storytelling, William Tran Dec 2016

"Let Me Tell You What I See" Creating A Culturally Relevant Arts Based Education Through The Use Of Photography And Storytelling, William Tran

Master's Projects and Capstones

There are many constructs that can hinder the ability of students of color to succeed in a classroom environment. Factors such as the construct of whiteness, microaggressions, the banking method, as well as cuts in arts based classes create a learning environment where oppression occurs on multiple levels. The construct of whiteness creates an environment in which only the ideas, values, lived experiences, and knowledge of whites are considered valid. Microaggressions uphold the construct of whiteness by insulting and invalidating any ideas, values, lived experiences, languages, and knowledge that are outside the construct of whiteness. The constructs of whiteness as …

Communicating Mobility And Technology: A Material Rhetoric For Persuasive Transportation (Book Review), Daniel L. Hocutt Dec 2016

Communicating Mobility And Technology: A Material Rhetoric For Persuasive Transportation (Book Review), Daniel L. Hocutt

School of Professional and Continuing Studies Faculty Publications

Humans are so enmeshed in mobility systems that they identify with themselves through those systems. In Communicating Mobility and Technology: A Material Rhetoric for Persuasive Transportation, Ehren Pflugfelder (2017) uses the term "automobility" to describe both "the specific kinds of mobility afforded by independent, automobile-related movement technologies" and "the complex cultural, bodily, technological, and ecological ramifications of our dependence on separate mobility technologies" (p. 4). Given identities enmeshed in ecologies of systems involving human and nonhuman actors through which transportation emerges, automobility is described as a "wicked problem" to be solved, in part, by technical communicators and communication designers naming …

Social Media And Political Communication In The 2014 Elections To The European Parliament, Paul Nulty, Yannis Theocharis, Sebastian Adrian Popa, Olivier Parnet, Kenneth Benoit Dec 2016

Social Media And Political Communication In The 2014 Elections To The European Parliament, Paul Nulty, Yannis Theocharis, Sebastian Adrian Popa, Olivier Parnet, Kenneth Benoit

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Social media play an increasingly important part in the communication strategies of political campaigns by reflecting information about the policy preferences and opinions of political actors and their public followers. In addition, the content of the messages provides rich information about the political issues and the framing of those issues during elections, such as whether contested issues concern Europe or rather extend pre-existing national debates. In this study, we survey the European landscape of social media using tweets originating from and referring to political actors during the 2014 European Parliament election campaign. We describe the language and national distribution of …

Domain Identification For Intention Posts On Online Social Media, Thai Le Luong, Quoc Tuan Truong, Hai-Trieu Dang, Xuan Hieu Phan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Today, more and more Internet users are willing to share their feeling, activities, and even their intention about what they plan to do on online social media. We can easily see posts like "I plan to buy an apartment this year", or "We are looking for a tour for 3 people to Nha Trang" on online forums or social networks. Recognizing those user intents on online social media is really useful for targeted advertising. However fully understanding user intents is a complicated and challenging process which includes three major stages: user intent filtering, intent domain identification, and intent parsing and …

“Frames” And Bias: How A Lack Of Context In Middle East News Coverage Can Impact U.S. Foreign Policy, Jennifer Lois Moore Dec 2016

“Frames” And Bias: How A Lack Of Context In Middle East News Coverage Can Impact U.S. Foreign Policy, Jennifer Lois Moore

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis is a critical examination into how American mainstream news media outlets often neglect to incorporate religious, cultural and historical context into their coverage of the Middle East. I show through my research and analysis that the news coverage of the Middle East, even at the highest echelons of American journalism, is often lacking in sophistication in terms of cultural and religious context, sometimes to the point of affecting its fairness and accuracy. The danger of this is that it has the power to grossly simplify and reduce to an “us versus them” frame an entire contingent of the …

Effectiveness Of Online Health Communities: Assessment Of Social Support And Stress, Amit Saha

Theses and Dissertations

With increasing prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among the younger generation, there is a shortage of adequate resources to deliver care for the individuals dealing with autism. Families dealing with autism face enormous economic costs and emotional stress to provide care for personnel diagnosed with ASD. Globally, almost two billion people use social media regularly to connect and stay in touch with their friends, family, and acquaintances irrespective of distance. For the families dealing with autism, social media provide an open and easily accessible platform to share, gather and exchange information. Systematic analysis of this extensive interaction among autism …

Language Change And Ideology In Irish Radio Advertising, Joan O'Sullivan Nov 2016

Language Change And Ideology In Irish Radio Advertising, Joan O'Sullivan

Irish Communication Review

This paper examines language ideological change in the Irish context through a longitudinal analysis of accent choice in a corpus of radio ads from 1977, 1987, 1997 and 2007. The analysis is based on Sussex’s (1989) ad components of Action and Comment. The Action component is generally comprised of contextual dialogic interaction and associated with discourses of ‘everyday informal interaction’ while the Comment component, often associated with the slogan of the ad, tends to be monologic and decontextualised and is associated with discourses of ‘power and authority’ (Lee, 1992). The use of standard British English accent features, particularly in …

Towards A Computational Model Of Frame Of Reference Alignment In Swedish Dialogue, Simon Dobnik, Christine Howes, Kim Demaret, John D. Kelleher Nov 2016

Towards A Computational Model Of Frame Of Reference Alignment In Swedish Dialogue, Simon Dobnik, Christine Howes, Kim Demaret, John D. Kelleher

Conference papers

In this paper we examine how people negotiate, interpret and repair the frame of reference (FoR) in online text based dialogues discussing spatial scenes in Swedish. We describe work-in-progress in which participants are given different perspectives of the same scene and asked to locate several objects that are only shown on one of their pictures. This task requires participants to coordinate on FoR in order to identify the missing objects. This study has implications for situated dialogue systems.

Creating A Common Trajectory: Shared Decision Making And Distributed Cognition In Medical Consultations, Katherine D. Lippa, Valerie L. Shalin Nov 2016

Creating A Common Trajectory: Shared Decision Making And Distributed Cognition In Medical Consultations, Katherine D. Lippa, Valerie L. Shalin

Patient Experience Journal

The growing literature on shared decision making and patient centered care emphasizes the patient’s role in clinical care, but research on clinical reasoning almost exclusively addresses physician cognition. In this article, we suggest clinical cognition is distributed between physicians and patients and assess how distributed clinical cognition functions during interactions between medical professionals and patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). A combination of cognitive task analysis and discourse analysis reveals the distribution of clinical reasoning between 24 patients and 3 medical professionals engaged in MS management. Findings suggest that cognition was distributed between patients and physicians in all major tasks except …

The Evaluation Of An Information Booklet In The Use Of Effective Patient Communication In The Setting Of Thoracic Anesthesia, Camille Guillot Miss, Gerry Keenan Dr Nov 2016

The Evaluation Of An Information Booklet In The Use Of Effective Patient Communication In The Setting Of Thoracic Anesthesia, Camille Guillot Miss, Gerry Keenan Dr

Patient Experience Journal

Effective communication is crucial in assuring a good patient experience during an in-hospital stay. In some settings, such as thoracic anaesthesia, patients are given a heavy load of new complex information, in a very limited space of time. Written information, such as patient information booklets, could help as an aid memoir and improve patient’s subjective understanding and preparedness for procedures. This study aims to produce a booklet, specifically targeted at thoracic anaesthesia, and to evaluate it using a linguistics framework in relation to the patient experience and clinical communication. For the study, a booklet was produced in the context of …

New Irish In The News, Neil O'Boyle, Jim Rogers, Paschal Preston, Franziska Fehr

Irish Communication Review

THIS ARTICLE PRESENTS selected findings from the ‘Media for Diversity and Migrant Integration’ project (hereafter MEDIVA), a European Union funded project involving six Member States (Ireland, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and the UK), which aimed to assess the capacity of media to reflect the increasing ethnocultural diversity of European societies. The specific focus of the project was on Third Country Nationals (TNCs) or persons without European Union citizenship. In this article we present the project’s content findings for Ireland, focusing specifically on representations of TNCs in a range of national print and broadcast outlets.

The Application Of A Master Frame: Tracing The War On Terror In The Irish Times 2001-8, Morgan Stack Nov 2016

The Application Of A Master Frame: Tracing The War On Terror In The Irish Times 2001-8, Morgan Stack

Irish Communication Review

THE ‘WAR ON TERROR’ has surely been one of the most analysed phenomenona in political communication during the first decades of the 21st century. That this might be so is perhaps unsurprising given its prominence and its impact on domestic and international politics during this period. It has increasingly been regarded as the new ordering principle of international relations (Archetti, 2004).The phenomenon has been identified as a ‘master frame’ akin to the ‘cold war’ (Hackett, 2001; Kuypers, Cooper and Althouse, 2008) which dominated political discourse in the latter half of the 20th century. Snow and Benford (1992) originally used the …

Home Visiting Programs For Families Of Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing: A Systematic Review, Nannette Nicholson, Patti Martin, Abby Smith, Sheila Thomas, Ahmad A. Alanazi M.Aud.

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Prelingual hearing loss greatly restricts a child’s language development, hindering his or her behavioral, cognitive and social functioning. Although technology such as hearing aids and cochlear implants are an option for providing access to sound, they fail to teach the child how to listen or attend, how to process language (whether visual or spoken), or how to produce language and communicate. Home visiting is widely recognized as a cost-effective intervention service delivery model. Home visiting programs for promoting language development in children who are diagnosed as deaf or hard of hearing have been in existence for over 50 years, yet …

Crossing Boundaries And Early Gleanings Of Cultural Replacement In Irish Periodical Culture, Regina Uí Chollatáin

Irish Communication Review

The first Irish language periodical, Bolg an tSolair, was published in Belfast in 1795 although journalism in a modern context through the medium of Irish did not begin to flourish until the early years of the twentieth century. The ‘Gaelic column’ in English newspapers; Philip Barron’s Waterford-based Ancient Ireland – A Weekly Magazine (1835); Richard Dalton’s Tipperary journal Fíor-Éirionnach (1862); alongside some occasional periodicals with material relating to the Irish language, ensured that the Irish language featured as an element of a modern journalistic print culture (Nic Pháidín, 1987: 71-2).

John David Bourchier: An Irish Journalist In The Balkans, Michael Foley

Irish Communication Review

In 1920, the funeral took place at the Rila Monastery in Bulgaria's Rhodope Mountains of the journalist John David Bourchier (1850-1920) of Bruff, Baggotstown, Co Limerick, Ireland. One newspaper in Sofia led with the headline: 'Our Bourchier is dead.' When news of his death became known in Sofia, a crowd gathered outside the hotel where he had lived on and off for 30 years. His funeral service was in the Alexander Nevski Memorial Church, a stunning monument of neo-Byzantine architecture that commemorates the Russian soldiers who died in the fight for Bulgarian freedom in 1877, from what is still referred …

Censorship And Secrecy: The Political Economy Of Communication And The Military, Tom Clonan Nov 2016

Censorship And Secrecy: The Political Economy Of Communication And The Military, Tom Clonan

Irish Communication Review

The political economy of communication encompasses a broad body of literature that explores linkages between mass communication media and power brokers or ‘elites’ at a societal level (Boyd-Barrett and Newbold, 1995; Chomsky, 1996; Downing et al., 1995; Golding and Murdock, 1996; Herman et al., 1998; Keeble, 2000; Kellner, 2001; Mc Chesney and Wood, 998; Mosco, 1996; Schiller, 1992). The literature focuses on a number of key power brokers within society such as the legislature, judiciary and a wide variety of powerful state agencies, including the armed forces, that would seek in their interactions with media organisations to regulate, control and …

Re-Imagined Communities?: Ireland, Europe And The Web As Shifting Sites Of Television Discourse, Maeve Connolly Nov 2016

Re-Imagined Communities?: Ireland, Europe And The Web As Shifting Sites Of Television Discourse, Maeve Connolly

Irish Communication Review

The rise of satellite and cable across Europe during the late 1980s contributed to the restructuring of communications spaces that had previously been dominated by national broadcasters. These changes were viewed with concern by many media commentators. Summarising the debate in 1989, David Morley and Kevin Robins noted that ‘it is broadly felt that these new technologies have disturbing and damaging implications for established national (and indeed continental) identities. There is a common fear of both their potential to disaggregate fixed national audiences and communities and to create new ones across national boundaries’ (Morley and Robins, 1989: 11). It seems …

Media Education In Ireland: An Overview, Brian O'Neill Nov 2016

Media Education In Ireland: An Overview, Brian O'Neill

Irish Communication Review

The Irish educational system is frequently celebrated as a world class system that is held in high domestic esteem, has contributed substantially to Ireland’s economic success and been compared very favourably with our counterparts elsewhere in the European Union. Such contentment belies the fact that it has also been a system very slow to change, is notoriously centralised and has only in the last decade instituted significant legislative reform that will enable and facilitate the growth of new curricular areas such as media studies – the topic of this article – an area in which Ireland lags substantially behind our …

Teilifís Na Gaeilge As A Public Sphere, Iarfhlaith Watson Nov 2016

Teilifís Na Gaeilge As A Public Sphere, Iarfhlaith Watson

Irish Communication Review

This paper employs the Irish language media to argue for a normative ideal of public access using the concept 'public sphere'. Public sphere as an ideal type contains a democratic potential which allows for universal participation in the formation of public opinion. Two problems exist with the public sphere as a concept in so far as the ideal does not correspond to the reality. On the one hand, it can be argued that the market dominates the public sphere and hampers the democratic, spontaneous and autonomous formation of public opinion. On the other, it can also be argued that the …
