Winona Campus Life, Mass Communication Department

Winona Campus Life

Winona Campus Life was a weekly laboratory newspaper produced by the WSU Mass Communciation Department students and printed as a supplement to the Sunday Winona Daily News, which began in September 1983. The newspaper provided coverage of the four institutions of higher education in Winona: Winona State University, St. Mary's University, College of Saint Teresa, and Winona Area Vocational-Technical School. It was created to provide a place for Mass Communcation students to publish their articles and photographs with the idea of generating reader feedback, which is essential in journalism education.

It distinguishes casual public talk from deliberative discussion in which citizens weigh policy choices, consider tradeoffs, and move toward informed judgment. The article outlines several indicators for recognizing emerging public issues, including opinion polls, demographic trends, cultural change, geography, and latent public sentiment.
