Crowdsourcing Global Wastewater Data, Don Mosteller, Sam Cohen, Cory Nestor, Angel Hsu, Omar Malik

Yale Day of Data

No time to waste: Crowdsourcing global wastewater treatment data

Worldwide, over 80 percent of wastewater is discharged into water bodies without undergoing treatment, severely impairing human well-being and ecosystem vitality along the way. National performance on wastewater treatment is difficult to quantify and is poorly understood due to a lack of common definitions, poor data collection standards, and limited historical data. To address this, the Yale Environmental Performance Index (EPI), a research group that produces a biennial ranking of country-level environmental performance, developed a first-of-its kind national wastewater treatment indicator.[1]

The indicator assesses wastewater treatment performance for 183 countries, …

Efficacy According To Viewing Length And Video Content Of Promotional Videos For Sustainability Graduate Education., Bryan T. Ogden

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Sustainability communication opens up a range of perspectives on the definition and theory associated with concepts of sustainability and communication. An overview of the literature dealing with sustainability communication and its measure is presented with a dialogic perspective in mind. Practical matters of the video length, production methods and design are described. The Project is evaluated with the sustainability testing rubric advanced by Polk, Reilly, Servaes, Shi and Yakupitijage. The study compares three videos of different length and environmental images through an online survey. Whom Do You Trust? Doubt And Conspiracy Theories In The 2009 Influenza Pandemic, Shawn C. Smallman Ph.D. Apr 2015

Whom Do You Trust? Doubt And Conspiracy Theories In The 2009 Influenza Pandemic, Shawn C. Smallman Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

The 2009 pandemic of H1N1 influenza led people around the globe to create narratives about the epidemic defined by the question of trust; these narratives ranged from true conspiracy theories to simply accounts in which mistrust and betrayal formed a motif. In particular, most of these narratives reflected a fear of capitalism and globalization, although in specific regions, other issues—such as religion—played a more central role. These stories were not unique to the H1N1 pandemic but rather have appeared with every contemporary outbreak of infectious disease. This paper will examine conspiracy theories and moral panics related to the H1N1 pandemic …

From “The Silent Spring” To The Globalization Of The Environmental Movement, Habibul H. Khondker Ph.D. Apr 2015

From “The Silent Spring” To The Globalization Of The Environmental Movement, Habibul H. Khondker Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This paper traces the history of environmental movement and the growing awareness of sustainable living in the past half a century. Taking The Silent Spring of Rachel Spring (published in 1962) as a point of departure, this paper navigates through the interplay of awareness and consciousness raising, knowledge production, institution building, environmental movement and its globalization. The paper examines the lack of development of a holistic understating of environmental challenges of the world in the face of issue-based social movements. The paper presents the transformation of the conceptualization of development from a narrow “economic development” as measured in income growth …

Asian International Students’ College Experience: Relationship Between Quality Of Personal Contact And Gains In Learning, Krishna Bista Ed.D. Apr 2015

Asian International Students’ College Experience: Relationship Between Quality Of Personal Contact And Gains In Learning, Krishna Bista Ed.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This study examines associations between Asian international students’ quality of personal contact and gains in learning. Based on a sample of 705 Asian international students, results indicate that Asian international students’ relationships with peers, faculty, and administrative staff are positively associated with five domains of gains of learning (i.e., personal development, science and technology, general education, vocational preparation, and intellectual skills). Academic level, length of stay, and country of origin predicted gains in learning when all independent variables were included in the model. Implications for the positive college experience for Asian students are discussed.
