A Dialogue On Communication And Theology: Theological Reflection Andcommunication, Paul A. Soukup Jan 1995

A Dialogue On Communication And Theology: Theological Reflection Andcommunication, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

Theology and communication seem to go together, at least because the Church is as much in the communication business as it is in the business of reflecting on its belief. Whether the disciples go forth to proclaim the good news to all the nations, or a diocese publishes a newspaper, or an entrepreneur starts a religious cable station, the Church is unmistakably linked to communication. On the other hand, the Church's is certainly not the only wave in the sea of information in which people live. Augustine noticed that and devoted the De doctrina christiana to a theological consideration of …

Postmodernism And Anthropology, Elisabeth R. Gaines Jan 1995

Postmodernism And Anthropology, Elisabeth R. Gaines

Nebraska Anthropologist

Postmodem anthropology questions the authority of the objective participant observer, yet eludes a precise definition. Many different experimental approaches comprise the postmodern stand, and represents a diversion from interpretive anthropology. Deconstructionists peel away the layers of subjectivity from written text derived from observation. The movement presently resides in a whirlwind of conflicting opinions conceming the postmodem style of ethnography. One of these styles, inclusive of anything and everything, conveys a chaotic message, but lacks a truly holistic quality. Some postmodem critics believe the key to fundamental meaning lies in a historical perspective where the subtleties of interpretation and writing are …

Cultural Materialism And The Teaching Of Media : The Lesson Of Raymond Williams, D. I. Mcritchie Jan 1995

Cultural Materialism And The Teaching Of Media : The Lesson Of Raymond Williams, D. I. Mcritchie

Theses : Honours

This study seeks to examine Raymond Williams' concern with media education and its relevance to contemporary curriculum in Western Australia. By means of a critical study of specific texts of Williams, it was intended to explore the possibility of refining the Western Australian Media Studies syllabuses from a cultural materialist perspective. Williams' writings lead to the conclusion that media education should be more specifically related to popular culture. The cultural materialist approach enables and encourages a close link between the Western Australian Media Studies syllabuses and students' own cultural experiences. Cultural materialism recognises that culture and society are in a …

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender, Polly Thistlethwaite, Daniel C. Tsang

Publications and Research

The proliferation of publications in the lesbian, Gay, bisexual, and transgender press has allowed the weaving of a well-informed network of previously isolated individuals and communities, empowering and unifying lesbian, gay, and other sexual minorities," Dan Tsang and Polly Thistlethwaite wrote in the introduction to the 'Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender' section of Katzes' 1995 edition of Magazines for Libraries. This title review of the queer periodicals of the day was intended to serve as a guide and justification for 'mainstream' libraries' collection building. The number and range of titles in Thistlethwaite and Tsang's collaborative entries (1989, 1992, and …

Academic Narratives: What's The Story?, John Countryman Jan 1995

Academic Narratives: What's The Story?, John Countryman

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article investigates the relationship between narrative behavior and the conduct of academic programs. In everyday parlance, the term narrative assumes a wide range of meanings from the most all-embracing to the most singular. Narrative informs the identity and behavior of individuals, institutions and societies. In fact, narrative is the principal agency whereby individuals, institutions and societies are constituted in the first place. Organizational narratives are as prevalent in academic settings as elsewhere. One such narrative is the sort that embraces the organization's life-story.
