Behavioral Training Relations: Transferring Behavioral Contingencies From Shelter To Home Settings Through Online Enrichment., Alaina Birchmeier
Honors Theses
Behavioral analysis can be used in our everyday lives to better our environment. Unfortunately, most do not know the behavioral principles, and therefore cannot apply it effectively. Just one area in which behavioral analysis can better our lives is in training our pets. These training techniques are not only useful, they are often sought after. The Kalamazoo area has a few resources which can help train dogs, however all are associated with fees and are still not very informative. In order to fill this void, I have made a website for the general public use, along with psychology students. The …

Portraying Sense Of Community Through Communication: How To Maximize The Benefit Of Social Media For A Community Agency, Julia Walter
Portraying Sense Of Community Through Communication: How To Maximize The Benefit Of Social Media For A Community Agency, Julia Walter
Honors Theses
Perceptions of social media networks are changing rapidly. Their purpose, function, effectiveness, and relevance are being widely debated while their global popularity and societal influence escalate. While individuals used the networks to share, manage, and change their personal lives, organizations jumped at the chance to benefit from low-cost public relations, advertising, and market research. Many organizations speedily adjusted their communication strategies to access these low-cost resources. Due to historical marginalization many nonprofit community agencies were slower to integrate this new media costing them the opportunity to compete for audience attention on level with the private industry. Neglecting to integrate these …

Deriving Significance From The Capstone Experience, Christina G. Clark
Deriving Significance From The Capstone Experience, Christina G. Clark
Honors Theses
This thesis is a cumulation of my experience as a participant of Western Michigan University's COM 4500: Public Relations Program Development and an observer after completion of the course. I took the course in the fall of 2011 and in the spring of 2012 interviewed previous clients. I was most curious with what the process of the course was like for the clients and what recommendations they had for the future. The biggest take-away from my interviews is the notion that the capstone course is essentially the finish line for the students and the starting point for the clients.

The Worth Of A Comfortable Shoe, Kristina Mellinger
The Worth Of A Comfortable Shoe, Kristina Mellinger
Honors Theses
The topic that I have chosen allows me to research not only the health concerns for wearing high heels (which was my original intent), but also the psychological, cultural, and historical aspects of wearing high heels and even shoes in general. This has allowed me to have endless possibilities during my research. I have learned many interesting facts about the history of shoes, and I find myself reading into the wee hours of the night just to learn more. My interest in this topic is derived from my own experience of wearing uncomfortably high heels. When I wear these ridiculous …

Don't Worry... It [Corn] Won't Kill You: The Starlink Crisis, Kelly J. Price
Honors Theses
What would you do ... if someone told you that the food you just ate was not safe for human consumption? In 1999, consumers across the nation were faced with this fear and began to second-guess the food they had been accustomed to eating for years. After Kraft Foods' Taco Bell taco shells were recalled in September for containing traces of StarLink corn, a genetically modified corn hybrid not approved for human consumption, consumer confidence in U.S. corn by-products decreased and manufacturer credibility dwindled (Aventis stops, 2000). People wanted to know who to blame for the apparent food contamination problem. …
Sojourner Truth: A Video Essay, Christina Laemers
Sojourner Truth: A Video Essay, Christina Laemers
Honors Theses
To hear people talk about Sojourner in areal context, with real stories from her days in Battle Creek gives the story the human element that eluded me for quite a time. Though my story changed its focus several times, the meaning of the project was always in the back of my mind. I really had to struggle to keep it in focus as time went on and the project began to grow exponentially.
Western Michigan University Teaching Style Survey: A Nonevaluative Scale Of Teaching Style As Reported By Students, Christopher A. Lewis
Western Michigan University Teaching Style Survey: A Nonevaluative Scale Of Teaching Style As Reported By Students, Christopher A. Lewis
Honors Theses
Students know little about the differences between professors that they may at some point come in contact. Students rely heavily on hearsay of others to learn about the teaching style of professors. This hearsay is non-scientific, relying on mainly opinions instead of fact. The Teaching Style Survey (TSS) looks at a professors' teaching style and how it relates to the students' learning style. With this information, students will be able to find professors that complement their learning style, not blindly picking the professor just to fill a time slot. This becomes particularly important when looking at multiple sections and elective …
