Economic Aseismic Design Of Rigid Retaining Wall, Yingwei Wu, Shamsher Prakash, V. K. Puri Apr 2004

Economic Aseismic Design Of Rigid Retaining Wall, Yingwei Wu, Shamsher Prakash, V. K. Puri

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Rigid retaining walls experience significant displacements during earthquakes. Several investigators have developed 1- D and 2-D models to predict displacements. A critical review of the state of the art shows that these model may not predict realistic displacements Wu (1999). A new 2-D model, which considers strain dependant soil stiffness and material damping, sliding and rocking motions, and practical field water conditions behind the wall as per Eurocode (1994) has been developed (Wu 1999). This model represents a considerable advance over the existing solutions and is easily useable by the practicing engineer. It has been shown that walls inclined on …

A Model Based On Mechanics To Predict Settlements In Bioreactor Landfills, C. H. Hettiarachchi, J. N. Meegoda, J. P. Hettiaratchi Apr 2004

A Model Based On Mechanics To Predict Settlements In Bioreactor Landfills, C. H. Hettiarachchi, J. N. Meegoda, J. P. Hettiaratchi

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Prediction of waste settlement behavior during the construction phase of a landfill is vital to effective functioning of leachate recirculation systems and gas collection pipe network, yet prediction of waste settlement is complex and difficult to perform. Few models, are currently available which can be used to calculate landfill settlement of the entire waste thickness after closure without accounting for variation in density and other parameters with depth. By starting after closure, these models do not account for settlements during construction. The use of entire depth does not allow for the calculation of strains at different depths. When landfills are …

Deep Foundations For New International Airport Passenger Terminal Complex In Bangkok, Ingo Fox, Mangtao Du, Stephen Buttling

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The foundation of the terminal in the Second Bangkok International Airport consists of over 25,000 bored piles (drilled shafts) and prestressed concrete cylinder driven piles installed in a complex stratified subsurface formation of soft and stiff clays interbedded by silty sands. A train tunnel to be located underneath the main terminal is a cut-and-cover tunnel supported on its sides by 1-meter thick reinforced concrete diaphragm walls and at the bottom a 2-meter thick basal slab. Particular technical challenges existed in the long-term settlement and potential downdrag caused by changes in effective overburden stresses as a result of excessive pumping of …

Consideration Of Raft And Soil Interaction In Piled-Rafts Design, N. Z. Gotman, M. I. Makarjev

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Based on the analysis of the piled-raft foundations, as well as experimental investigations of the geotechnical engineers, it is stated that the load of a piled-raft foundation is transferred both to a raft and a pile. When a piled-raft foundation design, the account of this factor allows the significant decrease of the foundation cost. To work out the method of a piled-raft foundation design, the experimental and numerical investigations have been carried out.The paper gives some results of the experimental and numerical investigations of piled-raft foundations. A method of the evaluation of a load part transferred to a raft and …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The evaluation of local site effects, by means of ground response analyses, is a very complex and difficult task, which requires a multidisciplinary approach. This is operative philosophy expressed by VEL Project (Valutazione degli Effetti Locali), sponsored by Tuscany Region, to the aim to seismic risk characterization in the main seismic areas (i.e. Garfagnana, Lunigiana, Amiata, Valtiberina and Mugello). One of the most important urban centres, involved in the multidisciplinary activity of the VEL project, is certainly the town of Fivizzano located nearby the city of Massa, which was strongly damaged during the earthquake of September 1920 (the strongest seismic …

The Reflection Of Quasi Waves At Free Boundary Of A Fibre-Reinforced Medium, A. Chattopadhyay, R. L. K. Venkateswarlu, S. Saha

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The propagation of plane waves in fibre-reinforced medium is discussed. The expressions of phase velocity of quasi-P (qP) and quasi-SV (qSV) waves propagating in plane symmetry are obtained in terms of propagation vector. We have established a relation from which displacement vector can be obtained in terms of propagation vector. The expressions for the reflection coefficients of qP and qSV waves are obtained. Numerical results of reflection coefficients are obtained and presented graphically. The partition of energy between qP and qSV waves reflected on a free boundary due to incident qP and qSV waves are also obtained and presented graphically.

Groundwater Abstraction From Aquitard, Aquiclude And Thin Aquifer In Barind, M. Asad Uz Zaman

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Barind is the land where the quality of life is inextricably linked to the availability of water. We are trying to help the section of people of such area where water is considered only from the viewpoint of quantity; they do not have the scope to think from quality aspect for their survival. The scale of poverty level here is normally measured on the basis of per capita income; however, to give a better indication about the quality of life, the accessibility for food, education, health, safe drinking water, sanitation, medicine and social empowerment for decision-making should also be included …

Impact Of Geographical Information Systems On Geotechnical Engineering, J. David Rogers, Ronaldo Luna Apr 2004

Impact Of Geographical Information Systems On Geotechnical Engineering, J. David Rogers, Ronaldo Luna

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Over the last four decades Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have emerged as the predominant medium for graphic representation of geospatial data, including geotechnical, geologic and hydrologic information routinely used by geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineers. GIS allow unlimited forms of spatial data to be co-mingled, weighted and sorted with any number of physical or environmental factors. These data can also be combined with weighted political and aesthetic values to create hybrid graphic products capable of swaying public perceptions and decision making. The downside of some GIS products is that their apparent efficacy and crispness can also be deceptive, if data of …

A Methodology To Predict The Remaining Service Life Of Cscps, Jay N. Meegoda, Thomas M. Juliano, Mutiu G. Ayoola, Sunil Dhar

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Despite the fact that corrugated steel culvert pipe (CSCP) is widely used for stream crossings and drainage in many transportation systems in the US, historically, very little has been done regarding its condition assessment and planned maintenance. This research provides a methodology for developing a comprehensive plan for inspection, cleaning, condition assessment and prediction of remaining service of CSCP. Inspection frequency guidelines were developed based upon culvert size, age, importance and environmental factors, e.g., corrosion and erosion, bed load and pH. The CSCPs are classified into three levels according to increasing need for inspection, e.g., annual inspections are recommended for …

Application Of Wavelets In Detection Of Cavities Under Pavements By Surface Waves, Nenad Gucunski, Parisa Shokouhi Apr 2004

Application Of Wavelets In Detection Of Cavities Under Pavements By Surface Waves, Nenad Gucunski, Parisa Shokouhi

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A new seismic approach based on wavelet transforms of the surface response is proposed and applied to the problem of detection of shallow cavities under pavements. Seismic wave propagation is simulated by a transient response analysis on an axisymmetric finite element model. Shallow cavities in a homogeneous half-space and a pavement system of a variety of shapes and embedment depths are considered. The formulation of the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is presented and its advantage over the traditional time or spectral analysis based methods is demonstrated through illustrative examples. The response of the medium at different surface points is presented …

A Half Century Of Tapered-Pile Usage At The John F. Kennedy International Airport, John S. Horvath, Thomas Trochalides

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Tapered driven piles have been the deep foundation of choice ever since construction of and at the well-known John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFKIA) in New York City began in the late 1940s. Timber piles were used primarily for many decades but various brands of closed-end steel pipe piles have become preferred in recent years as engineers have sought ever-increasing allowable axial-compressive loads per pile. With currently available pile types it is now possible to routinely install tapered piles that have an allowable axial-compressive service-load capacity per pile in excess of 400 kips (1780 kN), with net ultimate axial-compressive geotechnical …

The Experience Of Reinforcement Of Existing Buildings During Construction In Conditions Of Compact Urban Planning, V. V. Semkim, A. Shaposhnikov

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Two-level underground part of 12-storeyed dwelling building was constructed in the historical center of Moscow in 2000. The strengthening of foundations was carried out by pressing in of tubular and concrete piles or by placing of bore and injection piles, depending on the results of mathematical modeling. Geotechnical monitoring of the adjacent buildings was carried out in the process of strengthening and new construction. The results of monitoring confirmed the correct way of the chosen solutions: the settlements did not exceed the ultimate permissible values.

Mathematical Modeling And Field Evaluation Of Embankment Stabilized With Vertical Drains Incorporating Vacuum Preloading, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This study presents the analytical modeling of vertical drains incorporating vacuum preloading in both axisymmetric and plane strain conditions. The effectiveness of vacuum pressure (i.e. both constant vacuum pressure and varied vacuum pressure) applied along the drain is considered. A multidrain plane strain model is employed to analyse an embankment at the site of Second Bangkok International Airport (SBIA) stabilised with prefabricated vertical drains. At this site, a significantly reduced height of sand surcharge was applied by reducing the pore pressures through vacuum preloading. The results of FEM analysis confirm the efficiency of vacuum preloading in comparison with the conventional …

Contact Analysis Of Separation Between Concrete Slab And Cushion Layer In Tianshengqiao Concrete-Faced Rockfill Dam, Bingyin Zhang, Ruifeng Shi, Zongliang Zhang

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Tianshengqiao concrete-faced rockfill dam (CFRD), with a maximum height of 178m, is the highest dam of the same kind in China and the second highest in the world. During the construction of the dam, some problems special for high CFRDs occurred, such as deficient of cushion layer and separation of concrete slab from cushion layer. In this paper, a finite element analysis is made to understand the deformation of the cushion layer and the separation between the slab and the cushion. Direct constraints method and Coulomb friction law are used to simulate the contact behavior between the deformable concrete slab …

In this work the origin and the causes of the earth fissures activation are discussed. They have appeared frequently in Ciudad Guzman (Guzman City). This city is located in a transition zone between basal rock elevations and the southeastern edge of the Graven of Zapotlan which is part of the Graven of Colima. The appearance of fissures produces damages such as: settlements and fractures in buildings, breakage and displacement of pipes for sanitary drainage, water and telephonical network, crackings and settlements in pavements, etc. Finally, four typical cases of fissure aparition and their consequences are presented. A serie of recommendation …

Strutural Damage Induced By Pyritic Shale, Shad E. Hoover, Mian C. Wang, Brian Dempsey Apr 2004

Strutural Damage Induced By Pyritic Shale, Shad E. Hoover, Mian C. Wang, Brian Dempsey

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The Evangelical Hospital located in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania has experienced distress in the form of cracked floor slabs and displaced structural steel due to swelling of the underlying fill material and natural bedrock formation. The bedrock consisted of black, pyritic, calcareous shale from the Marcellus Formation of the Hamilton Group (Devonian Age). The fill materials beneath the cracked concrete floor slabs consisted of the weathered shale fragments from this formation. Although mitigating the structural distress has been attempted, the building continued to experience problems relating to the swelling of the underlying bedrock materials. The expansion of the shale could be attributed …

Ground Improvement By Optimized Preload Program, Henrik Kristiansen, Todd Martin Apr 2004

Ground Improvement By Optimized Preload Program, Henrik Kristiansen, Todd Martin

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Preloading of sites underlain by compressible soils is a well-established site development procedure to reduce post-construction settlements of structures supported on shallow foundations. Considerable reduction in the preload duration can often be achieved by installation of vertical drains. It is desirable to extend vertical drains down through the compressible soils impacted by the preload and terminate the drains within relatively incompressible soils. If this cannot be achieved, then the potential exists for unacceptable post-construction differential settlements due to greater settlement below the center of the building than along its edges. If no relatively incompressible soils exist below the compressible soils …

End Zone Reinforcement For Pretensioned Concrete Girders, Christopher Y. Tuan, Sherif A. Yehia, Nipon Jongpitaksseel, Maher K. Tadros

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

In this study, a literature review was conducted to establish the background of current specifications and to evaluate the applicability of various theories and methods for design of end zone reinforcement. Analytical methods reviewed in this paper include finite element analysis, strut-and-tie modeling, and the Gergely-Sozen equivalent beam method. Previous experimental work combined with work conducted as part of this study was used to correlate between various theoretical and experimental results. This paper illustrates that no single theoretical method adequately represents the complex behavior at the end of a pretensioned concrete member. A general semi-empirical design procedure is proposed here. …
