Education By Example: A Motif In Joseph And Maccabee Literature Of The Second Temple Period, Lawrence Frizzell Jan 1989

Education By Example: A Motif In Joseph And Maccabee Literature Of The Second Temple Period, Lawrence Frizzell

Selected Works of Lawrence E. Frizzell

In Jewish tradition the five books of Moses hold the place of honor in Israel's sacred writings as the Torah or "instruction" of God. Some people, even in ancient times, seemed to emphasize the legislative teachings or commandments, so the Greek translators chose the word "Nomos" or "Law" to render Torah. Indeed, laws provide the practical norms whereby people guide their lives and teach their offspring. However, in most cultures legislation has its complement in inspiring narratives. Heroes and heroines of times long past are presented as worthy of imitation. They exemplify the ideal that offers a synthesis about the …

Biblical-Historical Study As Liberation: Toward An Afro-Christian Hermeneutic, Vincent L. Wimbush Jan 1989

Biblical-Historical Study As Liberation: Toward An Afro-Christian Hermeneutic, Vincent L. Wimbush

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

In the sense that they have always sought to know and articulate "the biblical position" on all matters pertaining to existence, including liberation for their people, all African American leaders--predominantly, though not exclusively, Christian--have been biblical theologians. But very few of these leaders have had as their major concern the academic study of the Bible apart from preparation for, and acceptance of, the presuppositions of confessional vocations. The paucity of African American biblical scholars only confirms the point.

The Complete And Perfect Salvation In Jesus Christ (Manual), Robert Voight, Holy Spirit Research Center, Oral Roberts University

Holy Spirit In the Now

In 1972, Lord J. Arthur Rank made a grant to Oral Roberts University to endow a Chair in the Holy Spirit. Oral Roberts was the first professor to be holder of that chair, and this course, The Holy Spirit in the Now, is the result of the several classes that Roberts taught concerning the Holy Spirit.

Students of ORU during the 1970s-1990s enjoyed the powerful teaching. Current students are still required to watch these videos in order to understand the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the founder of the University.

In the 1990s, Dr. Robert Voight …

Ministry, Management, And The Ecumenical Movement, Gary M. Simpson Oct 1987

Ministry, Management, And The Ecumenical Movement, Gary M. Simpson

Faculty Publications

The ecumenical movement in contemporary America should not be surprised to find itself in a quandary of questions regarding the "ministry” of the gospel. From the first decades following the ascension of Jesus until the present the whole complex of emerging questions of ministry have been intimately bound up with society-wide crises of authority. While it is nearly impossible to sort out the myriad questions regarding ministry that have arisen in the American context, one factor in particular has and, if left unchecked, will continue to subvert the ministry of the gospel: a society-wide managerial mode of authority. It has …

A Public Ministry By All The Baptized?, Patrick R. Keifert Oct 1987

A Public Ministry By All The Baptized?, Patrick R. Keifert

Faculty Publications

Any discussion of the ministry of the baptized eventually reaches a point where someone asks, “If all the baptized are ministers, then why and how do we distinguish between the ministry of clergy and laity?” One promising answer begins, “The clergy have a public ministry....” The unspoken half of that answer, seldom said, but powerfully lived out in contemporary capitalistic cultures is, “The laity’s ministry is private.” This response constricts the scope of the gospel and plays into the contemporary gulf between the public and private dimensions of our lives.

The Delay Of The Parousia As Reflected In 2 Thessalonians 2 With A Focus On Reexamining The Referential Meaning Of The Two Greek Participles, Τό Kαtεxov & Ό Kαtεxwv, Lonnie Darnell Ii Jul 1987

The Delay Of The Parousia As Reflected In 2 Thessalonians 2 With A Focus On Reexamining The Referential Meaning Of The Two Greek Participles, Τό Kαtεxov & Ό Kαtεxwv, Lonnie Darnell Ii

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis examines the composition of 2 Thessalonians 2 and focuses specifically on the relationship of the participles Τό Kαtεxov and Ό Kαtεxwv to the chapter's main theme, the Parousia of Jesus Christ. The study begins with a discussion of the various interpretations given to solve the referential meanings of the participles (chapter one). This exploration of the various attempts of scholars to account for the participles concludes with the challenge to seek answers elsewhere.

To help situate and evaluate what the writer says in regard to the participles, it was necessary to reassess the role of 2 Thessalonians 2 …
