Hybrid Catalysis For The Direct Addition Of Unactivated Aldehydes And Ketones To Alkenes And Alkynes, Jacob Porter
Hybrid Catalysis For The Direct Addition Of Unactivated Aldehydes And Ketones To Alkenes And Alkynes, Jacob Porter
Dissertations (1934 -)
Reactions for the alpha functionalization of carbonyl compounds are important for the synthesis of complex organic materials such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and natural products. Current methodology used to perform these reactions is inefficient in that pre-activated coupling partners or sensitive catalysts are usually required. Described herein is the study and development of bifunctional and dual catalytic systems for carbon-carbon bond formation via the direct addition of unactivated carbonyl compounds to unactivated alkenes/alkynes. A dual catalyst system is one which utilizes two distinct catalysts to simultaneously activate separate reactants, and in a bifunctional catalyst the two catalytic components are present separately …

Single materials which have a multitude of photophysical processes by selective doping are in high demand in the community of material science due to their multifunctional applications. Upconversion (UC) and downconversion (DC) luminescence properties of lanthanide doped nanoparticles (NPs) are imperative for their broad application potentials. Here, we describe two series of either doubly or triply doped La2Zr2O7 NPs synthesized by a molten salt method. For the former, La2Zr2O7:Yb,Er NPs display bright red and moderate green UC (VUC) and NIR-B DC (NDC) at around 1550 nm, which are highly desirable for in-vivo bioimaging applications. For the latter, La2Zr2O7:Gd,Yb,Tm NPs demonstrate …

Improving Thorium-230 Determination In Marine Sediment, Katherine Mateos
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Our oceans are intimately related to the climate of our planet. Paleoceanographic approaches aim to study oceans through geologic time to improve models of future climate. Radioisotopes provide us with chemical tracers that help us understand change through time. The uraniumseries decay chain contains thorium-230, a decay product of uranium-234. This isotope is useful to paleoceanographers in its disequilibrium to its parent isotope and in determining the flux of sediment falling to the ocean floor. In order to use 230Th to study oceans, we must be able to accurately measure the amount of thorium in sediment samples. Thorium is found …

Heterogeneous Ozonation Of Model Drinking Water Contaminants Using Cbv-720 Zeolite, Benson Maxwell Solomon
Heterogeneous Ozonation Of Model Drinking Water Contaminants Using Cbv-720 Zeolite, Benson Maxwell Solomon
Theses and Dissertations
Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) are designed to remove aqueous organic contaminants through their reaction with hydroxyl radicals (HO∙). Ozone is classified as an AOP due to its ability to produce hydroxyl radicals, as well as its ability to oxidize a wide range of organic contaminants. Due to the unselective nature of hydroxyl radicals, many organic and inorganic co-solutes can act as scavengers, reducing the efficiency of an AOP. Here we show a probe system for testing the hypothesis that adsorptive ozonation of contaminants may yield a more selective environment that favors neutral contaminant oxidation over oxidation of co-solutes.
Initial experiments …

Macromolecular Engineering Of Biomass Polymers And Stimuli-Responsive Materials Towards Enhanced Thermomechanical Properties, Meghan E. Lamm
Macromolecular Engineering Of Biomass Polymers And Stimuli-Responsive Materials Towards Enhanced Thermomechanical Properties, Meghan E. Lamm
Theses and Dissertations
Commodity polymers are used in every aspect of daily life, and most of these polymeric materials are synthesized using petroleum-derived sources. There are direct environmental consequences to this petroleum dependence including greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Biomass-based polymers show promise for the mitigation on negative environmental impact, in comparison with petroleum-derived counterparts. However, some biopolymers suffer from low chain entanglement due to bulky or long side chain structures, resulting in poor mechanical properties. In this dissertation work, macromolecular engineering is used to design biomass-derived polymers featuring a variety of structures and functionalities. Additionally, biopolymer properties (including thermomechanical enhancement) and …

Ultra-Fast Sensors To Study The Fundamental Neurochemistry Underlying Disease, Alyssa West
Theses and Dissertations
Serotonin is a vital neurotransmitter whose exact roles are ill-defined. Dysfunctions in serotonin signaling are thought to underlie a myriad of neurological problems including depression and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Prior to investigating serotonin’s role in disease states, one must understand more about the functionality of serotonin in healthy in vivo models. To study serotonin in vivo, fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) and fast- scan controlled adsorption voltammetry (FSCAV) are employed to measure evoked and basal serotonin concentration, respectively. These methods, combined with mathematical modeling, provide information regarding regulatory mechanisms of serotonin neurotransmission. FSCV and FSCAV are first applied to …

We describe a strategy for the iodane-guided functionalization of sterically congested C-H bonds, which is distinct from electronic, steric or proximity guided C-H functionalization methods. Readily accessible aryl(Mes)iodonium salts serve as the starting materials in these reactions and produce complex 1,2,3,4-substituted arenes via aryne intermediates. This approach is especially powerful when coupled with the innate C-H functionalization reactivity of simple arenes, to replace two C-H bonds with two C-C or C-heteroatom bonds while over-riding steric effects that typically inhibit such reactions. DFT stud-ies reveal a contribution of inductive, resonance, and steric effects on the regioselectivity of C-H cleavage and aryne …

The 1H NMR spectra of Fe(OEP)(HNO), which was formed from Fe(OEP)(NO)− in the presence of 3,5-dichlorophenol, were studied as a function of temperature. The chemical shift of the HNO proton showed a unique behavior which could be explained based on the equilibrium between the protonated complex, Fe(OEP)(HNO), and the hydrogen-bonded complex, Fe(OEP)(NO)−···HOPh. This equilibrium was consistent with UV/visible spectroscopy and the voltammetric data. UV/visible stopped-flow experiments showed that the hydrogen-bonded complex, which was formed when weak acids such as phenol were added, and the Fe(OEP)(HNO) complex were quite similar. In addition to the HNO proton resonance, …

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The enzyme ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (ADP-Glc PPase) controls the biosynthesis of glycogen in bacteria and starch in plants. It is regulated by various activators in different organisms according to their metabolic characteristics. In Escherichia coli, the major allosteric activator is fructose 1,6-bisphosphate (FBP). Other potent activator analogs include 1,6-hexanediol bisphosphate (HBP) and pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (PLP). Recently, a crystal structure with FBP bound was reported (PDB ID: 5L6S). However, it is possible that the FBP site found is not directly responsible for the activation of the enzyme. We hypothesized FBP activates by binding one of its phosphate groups to …

The programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1)/programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) is an immune checkpoint (ICP) overexpressed in various types of tumors; thus, it has been considered as an important target for cancer therapy. To determine important residues for ligand binding, we applied molecular docking studies to PD-1/PD-L1 complex inhibitors against the PD-L1 protein. Our data revealed that the residues Tyr56, Asp122, and Lys124 play critical roles in ligand binding to the PD-L1 protein and they could be used to design ligands that are active against the PD-1/PD-L1 complex. The formation of H-bonds with Arg125 of the PD-L1 protein …
