Rise To Power Of Senator Joseph R. Mccarthy: Reflections Of The Cold War Mccarthy Era In American Film, Scott Lainer May 1987

Rise To Power Of Senator Joseph R. Mccarthy: Reflections Of The Cold War Mccarthy Era In American Film, Scott Lainer

Honors Theses

The common bond between much of the film industry and Joseph McCarthy was insecurity and the drive for national approval. If one grasps the specific characteristics of McCarthy the man, and the methods of these politically "inspired" movies, we can to better place the period into context and acknowledge the fact that, if the citizenry is not aware, and is again caught by an ever-building wave of trickle down sentiment, the 1950s might not prove to be an isolated period in American history. Insecurity was not a fifties novelty. It still exists, and could potentially escalate anti-Communist policy and sentiment …

Synthetic Studies Toward B-Alkylthiolanthionines, Hwa-Ok Kim May 1987

Synthetic Studies Toward B-Alkylthiolanthionines, Hwa-Ok Kim

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Synthetic routes toward a B-alkylthiolanthionine derivative, as found in the quinomycin depsipeptide antibiotics, have been studied through a sequence involving as the key intermediates and steps (a) (S) - Z-[(benzyloxycarbonyl)amino]-3,3-dimethoxy-l-propanol (2), prepared from N-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-serine in 3 or 4 steps, (b) N-benzyloxycarbonyl- 0 - tetrahydropyranyl-B,B-(ethylsulfinylethylthio)-alaninol (4a), converted from 2, and (c) attempted Lewis acid catalyzed replacement of alkylsulfinyl function by thiol moiety of cysteine, which gave undesired products. Stability of protecting groups used in this study, which are N,0-isopropylidenyl and tetrahydropyranyl functions in N-protected-L-serinol 20 or 26, under acidic conditions was found to play an important role in determining the optical …

The Aminolysis Of N-Hydroxysuccinimide Esters. A Structure-Reactivity Study, Gary W. Cline, Samir B. Hanna

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Twelve amines, which vary substantially in basicity and in steric environment around N, have been allowed to compete—in anhydrous dioxane solution—in the aminolysis of the N-hydroxysuccinimide esters of unsubstituted, p-OCH3, p-N02, and 3,5-(N02)2 benzoic acids. The amines, which encompass a basicity range of 6.5 pk units, display a 10000-fold variation in reactivity in their reaction with the p-N02ester. for the sterically unhindered amines, a Bronsted-type plot of log kobsdvs. pKa has a slope of ~0.7. The data fit a model (Satterthwait, A. C.; Jencks, W. P. J. Am. …

The Graduate Center for Cloud Physics Research at UMR has developed a cloud simulation facility to study phenomena occurring in terrestrial clouds and fogs. The facility consists of a pair of precision cooled-wall expansion chambers along with extensive supporting equipment. The smaller of these chambers, described in this article, is fully operational, and is capable of simulating a broad range of in-cloud thermodynamic conditions. It is currently being used to study water drop growth and evaporation for drops nucleated (activated) on well-characterized aerosol particles. Measurements have been made not only for continuous expansions (simulated updraft) but also for cyclic conditions, …

Studies Of Radiation Effects In Three High Polymers, Heidi Rene-Mitchell Ries Apr 1987

Studies Of Radiation Effects In Three High Polymers, Heidi Rene-Mitchell Ries

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Three high polymers, Mylar®, Ultem®, and Kapton®, were irradiated to total doses of 1, 5, and 9.5 gigarad using 1-MeV electrons. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the materials before and after irradiation were measured using an AC electrical dissipation factor technique. From the Tg data, it was found that the electron radiation at these total doses results in net chain scissioning in Mylar and net crosslinking in Ultem, while self-mending is predominant in Kapton. The dielectric constant was measured before and after irradiation, but no significant changes due to irradiation were observed. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) …

Esr Study Of Optically Induced Phase Transitions, Juana Vivó Acrivos, H. P. Hughes, S. S.P. Parkin

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

We have identified an optically enhanced magnetic phase transition in the newly synthesized organic molecular charge transfer salt, (BEDT-TTF)3Ta2F11 (BEDT-TTF bisethylenedithiolotetrathiafulvalene) by ESR absorption measurements in the X band microwave region. At room temperature, only a doublet state ESR absorption is observed, but below 30 K severa~ tripl~t E.SR absorpti_ons appear. The orientation dependence of the ESR absorption under lllummat10n at energies near the band gaps in the material ( 640 nm, T = 12 to 5 K H0 < 0.34 T) indicates that there are rapid spin exchange processes with times r < w-s; near 7 ~o 5 K.along cert~in ~rystallographic directions with a temperature dependen~e suggesting spm-lattlce relaxation times which proceed via Van Vleck "direct processes." This, to our knowledge, is the first case where the magnetic properties of a charge transfer salt are altered by the interaction with photons of energy equal to the band gaps in a low dimensional solid providing a new, interesting way to investigate these materials.

The Aperiodic Crystal Picture And Free Energy Barriers In Glasses, Randall W. Hall, Peter G. Wolynes Jan 1987

The Aperiodic Crystal Picture And Free Energy Barriers In Glasses, Randall W. Hall, Peter G. Wolynes

Collected Faculty Scholarship

The aperiodic crystal picture associates the glass transition with freezing into a nonperiodic structure. Dynamics in the glassy state involves activated jumps between different aperiodic free energy minima. Activation barriers may be estimated through the use of freezing theory and the theory of dense solids. The results resemble, but are distinct from, free volume theory. Reasonable fits to experimental data are obtained.

Determination Of Dissociation Energies And Thermal Functions Of Hydrogen‐Bond Formation Using High Resolution Ftir Spectroscopy, B. A. Wofford, M. E. Eliades, Shannon Lieb, J. W. Bevan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

A technique which employs high resolution Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is demonstrated for evaluation of hydrogen bonddissociation energiesD 0 and D e . Results for HCN‐‐HF give a D 0=20.77(22) and D e =28.77(45) kJ/mol which are compared with previously determined values obtained from microwave absolute intensity measurements and a b i n i t i o molecular orbital calculations. Rovibrational band information available for HCN‐‐HF also permits evaluation of thermal functions of dimer formation in kJ/mol: ΔU ○ 298.2 =20.1(2), ΔH ○ 298.2 =22.6(2), ΔG ○ 298.2 =59.4(2), ΔS ○ 298.2 =−0.1235.

Molecular Dynamics In Hydrogen‐Bonded Interactions: A Preliminary Experimentally Determined Harmonic Stretching Force Field For Hcn‐‐‐Hf, B. A. Wofford, Shannon Lieb, J. W. Bevan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Observation of the 2ν1 overtone band in the hydrogen‐bonded complex HCN‐‐‐HF permits evaluation of the anharmonicity constant X 1 1=−116.9(1) cm− 1 and determination of the anharmonicity corrected fundamental frequency ω1. This information, and available data from previous rovibrational analyses in the common and perdeuterated isotopic species of HCN‐‐‐HF, offer an opportunity for calculation of an approximate stretching harmonic force field. With the assumptions f 1 2=f 2 4=0.0, the remaining force constants (in mdyn/Å) are evaluated as: f 1 1=8.600(20), f 2 2=6.228(9), f 3 3=19.115(40), f 4 …

A Theoretical Investigation Of Some Low-Lying Singlet States Of 1,3-Butadiene, Robert J. Cave, Ernest R. Davidson

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Results are presented from extensive ab initio calculations on several low-lying singlet states of cis- and trans-1,3-butadiene. The results indicate a qualitative difference between the cis and trans isomers for the lowest π → π* transition. For the cis isomer, the first excited singlet state of the same symmetry as the ground state is found to lie above the lowest π → π* transition, and we estimate that this is also the case for the trans isomer.

Harvested and grazed lupin stubbles on following wheat. Trial 86M8

This trial is difficult to analyze statistically because of the treatment changes induced by sheep breaking in to some of the plots. Further, lupin grain yields were not very high and so differences between harvested and unharvested treatments are not large. Also the grazing intensity was not very severe (except on the unintentionally grazed plots) and so the effect of grazing is also relatively small.

Improved Synthesis Of 5-Methylbenz(A)Anthracene, Jia Che, Dominic T.C. Yang Jan 1987

Improved Synthesis Of 5-Methylbenz(A)Anthracene, Jia Che, Dominic T.C. Yang

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A revised synthesis of 5-methylbenz(a)anthracene is reported. It involves only three simple and convenient steps starting from a commercially available compound, and gives a 82% overall yield. Bromination of 5-methylbenz(a)anthracene with N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) in carbon tetrachloride furnishes 5-bromomethylbenz(a)anthracene in a 92% yield. When bromination is carried out using dimethylformamide as the solvent, 7-bromo-5-methylbenz(a)anthracene is formed as the exclusive product.

Sequential Solvent Extraction Of Argonne Premium Coal Samples, Wanping Mai Jan 1987

Sequential Solvent Extraction Of Argonne Premium Coal Samples, Wanping Mai

Masters Theses

Five coals from the Argonne Premium Coal Sample program, ranging in rank from sub-bituminous to low volatile bituminous, before and following artificial weathering, were exhaustively extracted with solvents in the sequence: toluene, tetrahydrofuran, N,N-dimethyl-formamide, and pyridine.

Sequential solvent extraction reveals more insight into the coal structure than single solvent extraction because fractions are isolated on the basis of both molecular size and polarity. The recovered extracts and residue from the extraction are monitored by FT-IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, phenol content, solvent swelling, and Gel Permeation Chromatography analysis (GPC). The extraction results show that for fresh coals, the total extract yields …

Electrochemical Studies Of Iron, Cobalt, And Nickel Complexes Of Bidentate Phosphine Thioether Ligands, Robert L. Turner

Masters Theses

The electrochemical behavior of a series of cationic complexes, [Ni(S-P)2]2+, [Fe(S-P)2(CH3CN)2.5]2+ and [Co(S-P)2CH3CN]2+, where S-P= (C6H5)2PCH2CH2SCH2CH3, has been examined in acetonitrile on mercury and platinum electrodes. The nickel compound was reduced in two reversible diffusion controlled, one-electron transfers. Addition of PPh3 (Ph=C6H5) and S-P caused a positive potential shift in the nickel(I) to nickel(0) wave. An EC mechanism was postulated to account for this …

Applications Of The Semiclassical Spectral Method To Nuclear, Atomic, Molecular, And Polymeric Dynamics, M. L. Koszykowski, George A. Pfeffer, Donald W. Noid

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Nonlinear dynamics plays a dominant role in a variety of important problems in chemical physics. Examples are unimolecular reactions,’ infrared multiphoton decomposition of molecules,’ the pumping process of the gamma ray laser,’ dissociation of vibrationally excited state-selected van der Waals’s complexes,’ and many other chemical and atomic processes. The present article discusses recent theoretical studies on the quasi-periodic and chaotic dynamical aspects of vibrational-rotational states of atomic, nuclear, and molecular systems using the semiclassical spectral method (SSM).’ We note that the coordinates, momenta, and so on, are found using classical mechanics in the studies included in this review. Consequently, certain …

Preparation Of Geminal Diflourodienes, Antonio Landavazo Jan 1987

Preparation Of Geminal Diflourodienes, Antonio Landavazo

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report discusses research involving the preparation of germinal difluorodienes. Free radical addition of dibromodifluoromethane to 1-hexene and cyclohexene was performed, followed by a double dehydrohalogenation to yield 1,1-difluoro-1,3-heptadiene and 3-(difluoromethylene)cyclohexene, respectively. NMR, IR, and mass spectral data were obtained and presented as groundwork for further research. A study comparing the free radical initiators, benzoyl peroxide and 2,2’-azobis-(2-methyl)proprionitrile (AIBN) was included, showing neither as ideal initiators for the free radical additions performed. The relative stabilities of the bromodifluoromethyl and the difluoroiodomethyl radicals were approximated. A Diels-Alder reaction of 1,1-difluoro-1,3-heptadiene with 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione produced the expected [4 + 2] cycloadduct in good …
