Moving Beyond Alpha: A Primer On Alternative Sources Of Single-Administration Reliability Evidence For Quantitative Chemistry Education Research, Regis Komperda, Thomas C. Pentecost, Jack Barbera
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
This methodological paper examines current conceptions of reliability in chemistry education research (CER) and provides recommendations for moving beyond the current reliance on reporting coefficient alpha (α) as reliability evidence without regard to its appropriateness for the research context. To help foster a better understanding of reliability and the assumptions that underlie reliability coefficients, reliability is first described from a conceptual framework, drawing on examples from measurement in the physical sciences; then classical test theory is used to frame a discussion of how reliability evidence for psychometric measurements is commonly examined in CER, primarily in the form of single-administration reliability …

A homologous series of electronically tuned 2,20,200-nitrilotris(N-arylacetamide) pre-ligands (H3LR) were prepared (R ¼ NO2, CN, CF3, F, Cl, Br, Et, Me, H, OMe, NMe2) and some of their corresponding Fe and Zn species synthesized. The iron complexes react rapidly with O2, the final products of which are diferric mu-oxo bridged species. The crystal structure of the oxidized product obtained from DMA solutions contain a structural motif found in some diiron proteins. The mechanism of iron mediated O2 reduction was explored to the extent that allowed us to construct an empirically consistent rate law. A Hammett plot was constructed that enabled …

Deconvoluting The Effects Of Surface Chemistry And Nanoscale Topography: Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilm Nucleation On Si-Based Substrates, Jing Zhang, Jingling Huang, Carmen Say, Robert L. Dorit, Kate Queeney
Chemistry: Faculty Publications
Hypothesis
The nucleation of biofilms is known to be affected by both the chemistry and topography of the underlying substrate, particularly when topography includes nanoscale (nm) features. However, determining the role of topography vs. chemistry is complicated by concomitant variation in both as a result of typical surface modification techniques. Analyzing the behavior of biofilm-forming bacteria exposed to surfaces with systematic, independent variation of both topography and surface chemistry should allow differentiation of the two effects.
Experiments
Silicon surfaces with reproducible nanotopography were created by anisotropic etching in deoxygenated water. Surface chemistry was varied independently to create hydrophilic (OH- terminated) …

Fluorescence spectroscopy experiments are a frequently taught as part of upper-division teaching laboratories. To expose undergraduate students to an applied fluorescence technique, a corrosion detection method, using quenching, was adapted from authentic research for an instrumental analysis laboratory. In the experiment, students acquire fluorescence spectra of sensing molecules in the presence of mock sculpture samples and discuss the condition of the sculptures based on the levels of soluble iron detected. This real-world-based experiment allows students the chance to engage with ongoing research and further understand the challenges with early detection of corrosion. Most students successfully completed the experiment, wrote a …

Several classes of ligands for Protease-Activated Receptors (PARs) have shown impressive anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective activities, including PAR2 antagonists and the PAR1-targeting parmodulins. In order to support medicinal chemistry studies with hundreds of compounds and to perform detailed mode-of-action studies, it became important to develop a reliable PAR assay that is operational with endothelial cells, which mediate the cytoprotective effects of interest. We report a detailed protocol for an intracellular calcium mobilization assay with adherent endothelial cells in multiwell plates that was used to study a number of known and new PAR1 and PAR2 ligands, including an alkynylated version of the …

Historically, natural products have provided unique research opportunities and challenges for organic synthesis, chemical biology, and medicinal chemistry due to their molecular complexity and effects on physiological systems. The total synthesis of natural products has not only produced novel reaction methods and strategies capable of efficiently generating complex structural motifs but also granted access to sufficient quantities of otherwise scarce natural product material for clinical evaluation. These synthetic efforts have facilitated the formation of a transdisciplinary partnership between chemistry, biology, and medicine that has been paramount in elucidating the chemical and pharmaceutical utility of natural products. Chapter I of this …

Plasmas with dense concentrations of reactive species such as hydrated electrons and hydroxyl radicals are generated from focusing intense femtosecond laser pulses into aqueous media. These radical species can reduce metal ions such as Au3+ to form metal nanoparticles (NPs). However, the formation of H2O2 by the recombination of hydroxyl radicals inhibits the reduction of Ag+ through back-oxidation. This work has explored the control of hydroxyl radical chemistry in a femtosecond laser-generated plasma through the addition of liquid ammonia. The irradiation of liquid ammonia solutions resulted in a reaction between NH3 and OH·, forming peroxynitrite and ONOO−, and significantly reducing …
Model Chemistry Study Of Choline And Urea Based Deep Eutectic Solvents, Libby Nicole Kellat
Model Chemistry Study Of Choline And Urea Based Deep Eutectic Solvents, Libby Nicole Kellat
ETD Archive
Gaussian and GaussView software were utilized to characterize interactions between choline salts and urea, which form a deep eutectic solvent (DES). The initial system studied was choline chloride and urea, at a 1:2 molar ratio, which is also known as reline. Subsequent systems, substituting the chloride anion with other anions (fluoride, bromide, and hydroxide), were studied to show that the system with greater calculated strength of interaction will have more non-ideal physical properties, such as melting point (found in literature). Observations regarding structure related to counterion electron density and hydrogen bonding were made throughout the studies.
Direct Measurement Of Rupture Force Of Single Triazole Molecule By Atomic Force Microscope And Solid Phase Synthesis Of Monodisperse Polyethylene Glycols, Ashok Khanal
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This dissertation includes two topics, which are related to each other: (1) Rupture force measurement of single triazole molecule by atomic force microscope (AFM) and (2) Solid phase stepwise synthesis of polyethylene glycols (PEGs).
The reaction of an alkyne and an azide to form a 1,2,3- triazole has found wide applications. However, the stability of triazole under mechanical stress is unclear. We investigated the cycloreversion at the single molecular level using atomic force microscopy. A mica surface functionalized with a molecule containing a 1,2,3-triazole moiety in the middle and an activated ester at the end was prepared. An AFM tip …

Increased understanding of the importance of the affective domain in chemistry education research has led to the development and adaptation of instruments to measure chemistry-specific affective traits, including motivation. Many of these instruments are adapted from other fields by using the word ‘chemistry’ in place of other disciplines or more general ‘science’ wording. Psychometric evidence is then provided for the functioning of the new adapted instrument. When an instrument is adapted from general language to specific (e.g. replacing ‘science’ with ‘chemistry’), an opportunity exists to compare the functioning of the original instrument in the same context as the adapted instrument. …

Science education communities have called for rethinking curricula to improve student understanding of the nature of science and the role of science in addressing controversial modern issues such as climate change, energy policy, and pollution levels. One approach to meeting this call is integrating these topics into class activities that require students to use discussion and scientific approaches to solve problems and deliberate potential policy solutions. Deliberative democracy (DD) is one such active learning approach in which students work in peer groups to reach a consensus on a scientific topic relevant to both real-world issues and course content. During DD …

The effect of various solvents on the structures and properties of carboxylated SWNTs has been explored using the Same Level Different Basis Set approach (SLDB), where B3LYP functional of density functional theory (DFT) was applied. Armchair (4,4) and zigzag (8,0) and (9,0) tubes were considered as the test bed. In order to simulate varying concentration of –COOH groups, one to five acids groups were placed at one end of these tubes. These samples were placed in different solvents (namely, CS2, THF and water) with varying polarity and results were compared with gas-phase properties. Similar to the gas-phase, zigzag tubes also …

A Qualitative Comparison Of General Chemistry And Advanced Placement Chemistry Students’ Misconceptions Regarding Solution Chemistry, Megan Vandersee
Annual Graduate Student Symposium
There has been much research on student misconceptions regarding the particulate nature of matter and its relation to solution chemistry (e.g. Adadan & Savasci, 2012; Calik & Ayas, 2005; Calik, Ayas, & Coll, 2009; Pinarbasi & Canpolat, 2003; K. J. Smith & Metz, 1996). However, there is a lack of information regarding student misconceptions in areas of solution chemistry such as factors affecting solubility, polarity & molecular interactions and colligative properties. This research compared the misconceptions in solution chemistry held by students who are approaching the end of an Advanced Placement (AP) chemistry course in the high school setting with …

Wildfires emit significant amounts of pollutants that degrade air quality. Plumes from three wildfires in the western U.S. were measured from aircraft during the Studies of Emissions and Atmospheric Composition, Clouds and Climate Coupling by Regional Surveys (SEAC4RS) and the Biomass Burning Observation Project (BBOP), both in summer 2013. This study reports an extensive set of emission factors (EFs) for over 80 gases and 5 components of submicron particulate matter (PM1) from these temperate wildfires. These include rarely, or never before, measured oxygenated volatile organic compounds and multifunctional organic nitrates. The observed EFs are compared with previous measurements of temperate …

The Relationship Between Recollection, Knowledge Transfer, And Student Attitudes Towards Chemistry, Oluwatobi Omobonike Odeleye
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Certain foundational concepts, including acid-base theory, chemical bonding and intermolecular forces (IMFs), appear throughout the undergraduate chemistry curriculum. The level of understanding of these foundational concepts influences the ability of students to recognize the relationships between sub-disciplines in chemistry. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between student attitudes towards chemistry and their abilities to recollect and transfer knowledge of IMFs, a foundational concept, to their daily lives as well as to other classes. Data were collected using surveys, interviews and classroom observations, and analyzed using qualitative methods. The data show that while most students were able …

Computational Quantum Chemistry Studies Of The Stabilities Of Radical Intermediates Formed During The Oxidation Of Melatonin, Constance E. Warden
Computational Quantum Chemistry Studies Of The Stabilities Of Radical Intermediates Formed During The Oxidation Of Melatonin, Constance E. Warden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Melatonin, a nontoxic natural antioxidant, is of interest as a possible spin trap for use in spectroscopic methods to observe and identify short-lived free radicals, which have been linked to oxidative stress that may result in serious health problems. However, the reaction mechanisms for the oxidation of melatonin to form the product N1-acetyl-N2-formyl-5-methoxykynuramine are still not well understood. Computational quantum chemistry studies have been done on four proposed reaction mechanisms, involving the following major intermediate structures: a dioxetane, an epoxide, a melatonin radical cation, and a spin radical adduct. Molecular geometries were optimized at the …

Theoretical Study Of Photoelectrochemical Reactions And Ec-Sers On Spr Metallic Electrodes Of Silver And Gold, Yuan-Fei Wu, Ran Pang, Meng Zhang, Jian-Zhang Zhou, Bin Ren, Zhong-Qun Tian, De-Yin Wu
Journal of Electrochemistry
At present photoelectrochemistry has received much concern back to nanostructures of noble metals from semiconductor electrodes. This is due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of metallic nanostructures, which can effectively convert the far-field light to the near-field light and concentrate the photonic energy to the local surface area with high energy density. Thus, the different enhancement mechanisms, such as the local optical field enhancement, the formation of light generated hot carriers (hot electron-hole pairs), or the photothermal effect, have been proposed in literatures. On the basis of the SPR enhancement effect, the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) can be …
Quantum Dot Metrics For Preparative Chemistry And Fluorescence Applications, Yi Shen
Quantum Dot Metrics For Preparative Chemistry And Fluorescence Applications, Yi Shen
Theses and Dissertations
Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are considered to be a promising candidate for bio-imaging and solar cells because of their extraordinary photo-physical properties. The ultimate goal of this dissertation is to design a reliable matrix and a reproducible method to prepare QDs-based biocompatible probe for fluorescence applications. Synthesis of quantum dots requires a large amount of ligands to improve the stability at high temperature. However, for further application and surface modification of QDs, excess ligands must be removed. In this dissertation, I will first describe using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) as a media to purify different types of QDs. A …

This paper will describe the implementation and continuing development of five problem based laboratory experiments in a general chemistry course designed specifically for multiple disciplines of engineering students at the University of New Haven. The Problem Based Laboratory Experiments (PBLE) were developed to provide students with the opportunity to perform and develop experimental procedures working in interdisciplinary teams, while achieving a greater understanding of the role of chemistry in engineering fields. In each PBLE, students first complete a traditional chemistry experiment to gain an understanding of the chemical concepts and to become familiar with executing a written procedure with a …
Understanding College Students’ Exam Process In A General Chemistry Course, Angela Willson
Understanding College Students’ Exam Process In A General Chemistry Course, Angela Willson
Masters Theses
The main way most college chemistry courses assess what a student has learned is through a summative exam. After introductory science courses, such as general chemistry, many students cite poor teaching and disappointing grades in these courses as a reason for dropping out of STEM programs. There has been a lack of qualitative research on students’ experiences of the complete process of taking an exam from start to finish, or the exam process, which includes preparing for an exam, taking an exam, receiving feedback, and responding to feedback after the exam has been graded.
My goal in this exploratory study …
Computational Studies Of Spin Trapping Of Biologically Relevant Radicals By New Heteroaryl Nitrones, Eyram Asempa
Computational Studies Of Spin Trapping Of Biologically Relevant Radicals By New Heteroaryl Nitrones, Eyram Asempa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Heteroaryl nitrone spin traps have been suggested to act as free radical scavengers. The geometry optimizations and the single-point energies of the spin trapping reactions of the heteroaryl nitrones, 5,5-dimethylpyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) and α-phenyl-N-t-butylnitrone (PBN) have been computationally studied using ab initio (Hartree-Fock (HF) and second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2)) methods and Density Functional Theory (DFT) methods. The effects of new heteroaryl substituents on a parent nitrone spin trap have been examined at the HF and MP2 levels with the 6-31G*, and cc-pVnZ (n=D, T, Q) basis sets. The thermodynamics of the spin trapping at the C-site and O-site with •H, …
Surface Chemistry And Transport Properties Of Ii-Vi Semiconductor Nanowires, Pravin Paudel
Surface Chemistry And Transport Properties Of Ii-Vi Semiconductor Nanowires, Pravin Paudel
Theses and Dissertations
Semiconductor nanowires have been widely studied due to their unique properties such as width comparable to critical length-scales, high aspect ratio, and high carrier mobility. These unique properties make them a suitable candidate for various optical and electronic devices like photovoltaics, photodetectors, and field effect transistors. The nanowire surface plays an important role in the performance of these devices because of their high surface to volume ratio. The larger surface area of nanowires may provide better charge separation than planar heterostructures in photovoltaics by providing shorter distance to move for carrier before separation, however, presence of surface states may lead …

Non-Conventional Approaches To Syntheses Of Ferromagnetic Nanomaterials, Dustin M. Clifford
Theses and Dissertations
The work of this dissertation is centered on two non-conventional synthetic approaches to ferromagnetic nanomaterials: high-throughput experimentation (HTE) (polyol process) and continuous flow (CF) synthesis (aqueous reduction and the polyol process). HTE was performed to investigate phase control between FexCo1-x and Co3-xFexOy. Exploration of synthesis limitations based on magnetic properties was achieved by reproducing Ms=210 emu/g. Morphological control of FexCo1-x alloy was achieved by formation of linear chains using an Hext. The final study of the FexCo1-x chains used DoE to …
Synthesis And Utility Of Bis-Urea Macrocycles As Nanoreactors And As Ligands For Metal Organic Materials, Sahan R. Salpage
Synthesis And Utility Of Bis-Urea Macrocycles As Nanoreactors And As Ligands For Metal Organic Materials, Sahan R. Salpage
Theses and Dissertations
“Supramolecular chemistry” powered by non-covalent interactive forces forms the crux in the area of host-guest chemistry. Supramolecular assemblies often have different chemical and physical properties than that of its individual molecular entities and are used to develop novel functional materials. Our expertise involves making functional materials from macrocycles, which contain two urea groups and two rigid C shaped spacer groups. These individual macrocyclic components can self-assemble through hydrogen bonding and other non-covalent interactions to form porous supramolecular assemblies that can be used as confined reaction environments and as ligands to synthesize novel metal organic materials.
This dissertation focuses on studying …
Time-Lapse Polymerizations Triggered By Ph Clock Reactions, Elizabeth Jee
Time-Lapse Polymerizations Triggered By Ph Clock Reactions, Elizabeth Jee
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The theme of this work is time-lapse polymerizations triggered by pH clock reactions. The first chapter is the introduction and gives a long overview of the different chemistries studied here. The second chapter focuses on the bromate-sulfite clock reaction. Based on some simplified and accepted reaction equations for the bromate-sulfite clock. We presumed it may be possible to increase the pH of the solution via ammonia addition and hinder or significantly reduce the reactivity of the clock reagents, thus creating a storage stable reaction. Adding a polymer system that would not crosslink until the solution became acidic would have created …

Studies Of The Preparation Of Pi-Extended Anthracenes And Their Reactivity With An Emphasis On Their Photoreactivity, Hasnaa Abdelkareem Sadeq
Theses
Both 9,10-diaryl and 9,10-diarylethenyl substituted Anthracenes have recently been forwarded as light-regulated semiconducting materials, as well as potential constituent molecules in light-harvesting devices for the organic solar cell applications. So, it is of importance to understand whether such 9,10-substituted Anthracenes are stable under photo-irradiation for a long time, and what type of reactions they could undergo. In the present thesis, photochemistry of 9-anthranylacrylates and 9-aroylethenylanthracenes has been investigated. Anthranylacrylates and 9-aroylethenylanthracenes have been prepared by Wittig-olefination reaction from 9-anthranylcarbaldehyde. Bromination of these molecules was found to give an access to 10-aryl-9-aroylethenylanthracenes after Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions. While 9-ethenyl-substituted Anthracenes in principle …

It is not uncommon for students to find themselves underprepared when entering a post secondary institution. In additional to lower levels of academic achievement, underprepared students may not be aware that they lack the skills needed to be successful and effectively acquire and process information. Because of this, students that enter post-secondary institutions underprepared often require more support in and out of the college classroom.
In computational based classes, such as math, engineering, chemistry or physics, this support often includes an introduction to effective problem solving strategies. This study introduced faded worked examples as a problem solving approach to students …
