Systemization & Survival -- “Houston, We Have A Problem” – Business Lessons From Apollo 13, Judith Jacob Iddy, Njeru Zakayo
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
In the business world, there are different factors that determine whether a business will survive or not. Apollo 13 film perfectly demonstrates what every business undergoes throughout its lifecycle. Apollo 13 spacecraft started its journey to the moon successfully with the mission being to land on the moon. Unfortunately, within a very short period of time, Apollo 13 started to experience a series of problems that required quick actions and decisions to be made with the involvement of different sets of technical skills. Ultimately, by using the prototype and systems which NASA had established for Apollo 13, the teams managed …

In 2011, government institutions began utilizing HCMIS to reduce the manual workload of traditional administrative processes. The adoption of HCMIS in Tanzania is expected to increase efficiency by optimizing data accuracy, reducing costs, and eliminating paperwork. However, payroll losses continue to persist in the public sector. In 2018, the government incurred losses of Tanzania shillings (Tshs) 19.6 billion to 12,697 ghost workers. This study examines the challenges hindering the application of HCMIS in supporting selected human resource management (HRM) functions at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST). This study applied Institutional Theory and Socio-Technical Theory as …

Although entrepreneurship training programs are designed to help necessity entrepreneurs acquire skills and capabilities to take entrepreneurial action, participants in these programs often fail to do so. In partnership with a local government agency, we conducted a randomized field experiment involving 165 entrepreneurs in rural Tanzania where in addition to providing technical-skills training, approximately half of the participants also received ‘growth mindset’ psychological training. Those who received the growth mindset training displayed more entrepreneurial action in their business than those in the control group. Importantly, higher levels of entrepreneurial self efficacy mediated the positive impact on entrepreneurial action displayed by …

The aim of this article is to address the familiar question “Which swimming stroke should be taught first?” The discussion is usually focused on breaststroke versus crawl. Provoked by these naïve discussions of which stroke should be taught first (as if stroking equals swimming, which it emphatically does NOT), the question was answered metaphorically in an earlier article “No Stroke First – All Strokes First” (Stallman, 2008a). Here in Part I we identify and describe six strokes, all of which might be a candidate for any learners ‘very first’ stroke. We describe them as beginning strokes. Having identified and learned …

Investigating The Impact Of A Conditional Cash Transfer On Adolescent Pregnancy: Incidence And Health Outcomes, Mitzie Irene P. Conchada, Marites M. Tiongco, Dominque Hannah Sy
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The literature on conditional cash transfers focuses on the impact of such on health and education outcomes. The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program in the Philippines provides a cash grant conditional on requirements related to health and education. We investigated the impact of the program on adolescent pregnancy through its link to education. The program, which is designed to increase teen education, may lead to decreased adolescent pregnancy because it adds to the opportunity cost of getting pregnant. Though the incidence of pregnancy among adolescent women rates in the Philippines have declined over the past thirty years, a considerable number of …

Jostling For Space In Africa’S Business Periphery: A Review Of The Growing Competition Between Indigenous And Chinese-Owned Enterprises, Steve Kayizzi-Mugerwa
Southern African Journal of Policy and Development
This paper reviews recent research and related studies on the ongoing competition between Chinese and local entrepreneurs in the lower rungs of Africa’s business sector. Several studies have noted that since entry, Chinese firms have been able to undercut African entrepreneurs, thanks to superior networks and better financing. However, other findings portray more positive impacts of Chinese presence, including higher employment and tax revenues, and better supply of goods and services. It is possible to surmise that this jostling for space in Africa’s business periphery will not last. Ultimately, it must yield to changes in the host countries’ political economy …

Determinants Of Software-As-A-Service Adoption By Small And Medium Enterprises In Tanzania, Riziki Majengo, Mercy Mbise
The African Journal of Information Systems
Organizations in developed economies use the software-as-a-service (SaaS) model to improve performance and efficiency. However, its adoption in developing economies such as Tanzania is very low due to limited research on its adoption. This study enhances the adoption of SaaS in Tanzanian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by proposing a conceptual framework based on the diffusion of innovation theory and the technology-organization-environment framework and recommending strategies for improving adoption. The framework was tested using regression analysis on data collected from 139 SMEs. Findings show that eight factors, relative advantage, compatibility, awareness, cost, perceived security and privacy risk, reliability and availability, …
