Influences On Early Twentieth Century Bungalow Housing In Lincoln, Nebraska, Madeleine F. Panarelli May 1981

Influences On Early Twentieth Century Bungalow Housing In Lincoln, Nebraska, Madeleine F. Panarelli

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Housing publications of the Bungalow era (1900 to 1930) containing over 1200 illustrated Bungalows and derivations, were compared with 717 photographed representatives in Lincoln, Nebraska. These samples were categorized by 10 types first described by writer Henry Saylor (1911). Interpretations of the style by local builders and architects in Lincoln, Nebraska, were traced to house pattern books, national and local publications, and state and city records, to determine how the style evolved locally. The search led to regional design features of the Bungalow, nearly square forms, and composite types.

Development Of University And Professional Accountancy Education In New Zealand, M. J. R. Gaffikin Jan 1981

Development Of University And Professional Accountancy Education In New Zealand, M. J. R. Gaffikin

Accounting Historians Journal

University teaching of accountancy in New Zealand is probably unique in that it has developed hand in hand with the educational requirements of the profession. Although this close relationship did much to stimulate accounting education in the early years this is not so now. In attempting to meet the requirements of the profession and develop independent programmes the universities have been forced into an uneasy compromise. Those United States institutions which have recently created Professional Schools of Accounting may well find themselves similarly placed in the near future.

Farm Animal Welfare: Some Economic Considerations, Frances Turner, John Strak Jan 1981

Farm Animal Welfare: Some Economic Considerations, Frances Turner, John Strak

Agribusiness Collection

Farmers, just like other businessmen, attempt to produce a saleable product at the least possible cost to themselves. In this way they hope to assure themselves of some profit, and hence to earn a living. In itself this profit motive cannot be criticized, but in attempting to maintain their profits, farmers have adopted more intensive systems of animal production. In turn, the benefits from farmers using these new techniques have accrued to consumers in the form of relatively less expensive food. Clearly, by restricting the use of factory farming methods (which are associated with lower unit costs of production) there …

Euthanasia Of Day-Old Male Chicks In The Poultry Industry, Walter Jaksch Jan 1981

Euthanasia Of Day-Old Male Chicks In The Poultry Industry, Walter Jaksch

Agribusiness Collection

Humane killing of animals implies a painless death (euthanasia). This depends on the rapidity with which unconsciousness is achieved and the maintenance of this state until death occurs. Euthanasia methods for day-old chicks must also be economical and should not interfere with the use of the carcasses for animal food or fertilizer. Manual decapitation or dislocation of the neck are the best available manual methods of euthanasia. For larger numbers of birds, the literature recommends homogenization in a crusher. In the author's own experiments, the destruction of day-old chicks was most effectively carried out by poisoning with carbon dioxide (CO …

Sewer Science & Pound Seizure, Kenneth P. Stoller

Laboratory Experiments Collection

Significant decisions are being made in the City and County of Los Angeles over a seemingly insignificant issue- pound seizure. Outwardly, the issue is a triflepotentially inconvenienced animal research professionals vs. irate citizens who don't want lost pets sold for research. However, on another level, this conflict has imp I ications that reach to the very depths of irrationality- for far from fighting to promote the practice of pound seizure, scientists should be fighting to end it.

Productivity And Farm Animal Welfare, Michael W. Fox Jan 1981

Productivity And Farm Animal Welfare, Michael W. Fox

Agribusiness Collection

In the search for and debate over objective indices of farm animal welfare, productivity is regarded by many animal scientists and others in the livestock industry as the most reliable measure of an animal's overall well-being and adaptability. On the surface, this would seem to be so, as productivity--in terms of growth rate, milk yield, feed-conversion and egg production--can be easily quantified. However, there are serious flaws in this assumption.

The Dimensions Of Self-Management, David Goodman, Leland M. Wooton Jan 1981

The Dimensions Of Self-Management, David Goodman, Leland M. Wooton

Historical Working Papers

The concepts that differentiate self-management from authority-based management are explored. A survey, used to assess how executives view self- management, demonstrates relatively strong support for the notion. An overall analysis suggests that in the post WWII era, democracy in the work place and self-fulfillment elements in work design are gradually displacing classic American management and are now allied with the American value of individualism.

The Effects Of Mbo On Performance And Satisfaction In A Public Sector Organization, Kenneth R. Thompson, Fred Luthans, Willbann D. Terpening Jan 1981

The Effects Of Mbo On Performance And Satisfaction In A Public Sector Organization, Kenneth R. Thompson, Fred Luthans, Willbann D. Terpening

Leadership Institute: Faculty Publications

This field study examined the effects of MBO on measures of quantity and quality of performance and satisfaction with the work and supervision among employees in a human services agency. Although not all the quantity measures improved significantly, the combined measure for quantity of performance and one of two quality measures showed significant improvement following implementation of MBO. Satisfaction with supervision also significantly improved but not satisfaction with work. The study lends support to the use of MBO in public sector organizations.

Designing A Budgeting System With Planned Confusion, John Joseph Williams Jan 1981

Designing A Budgeting System With Planned Confusion, John Joseph Williams

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

The article explores the potential virtues of dual budgeting processes coexisting within a single budgeting information system for organizations experiencing changing environments. The treatment of discretionary cost activity in the traditional budgeting process is discussed and a comparison of the effectiveness of the techniques of zero-based budgeting and traditional budgeting is presented. Using both approaches simultaneously is said to hold potential for combining the best of both methods, but the cost-effectiveness of such a dual budgeting process is noted as a limiting factor.
