The Social Economics Of Frank H. Knight, J. Patrick Raines Jan 1987

The Social Economics Of Frank H. Knight, J. Patrick Raines

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

Frank Hyneman Knight is well known for rehabilitating neoclassical economics with his 1924 critique of Pigouvian welfare economics. In Knight's thirty years at the University of Chicago, he thoroughly developed the notion that economic freedom and market competition are essential to maximize society's welfare. However, Knight's belief in the superiority of the market mechanism does not preclude serious concern about issues of social justice and reform.

This study seeks to establish Frank H. Knight's contributions to social economics. Elements of Knight's work will be compared to commonly recognized characteristics of a social economist. Knight's prominence in the discipline of economics …

The objective s to identify the relative contributions of human and physical resources in the production of quality undergraduate education. The research methods are noteworthy in three general respects. First, the theoretical orientation emphasized interdependence among inputs and outputs in higher education. The significance of simultaneity is demonstrated in an empirical model estimated via a three-stage least-squares technique. Second, the study introduces an original and promising data set for research in higher educational production. Of special note is an index of output reflecting the quantity and quality of institutional production. …

Probative Capacity Of Accounts In Early-Modern Spain, Patti A. Mills

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper examines the probative capacity of accounting records as explicated in the accounting literature of early-modern Spain. Several early examples of Hispanic legal texts constitute the principal sources. The chief findings to emerge from this study are that legal requirements greatly influenced accounting forms and procedure during this period and that Castilian jurisprudence encompassed a theory and standards of evidence to guide the use of accounting records as evidential matter.

Goal Importance, Self-Focus And The Goal Setting Process, Chuck R. Williams, John R. Hollenbeck Jan 1987

Goal Importance, Self-Focus And The Goal Setting Process, Chuck R. Williams, John R. Hollenbeck

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

In this study we examine the role played by perceived goal importance and self-focus in the goal-setting process. More specifically, this study tests the interactive hypotheses that (a) task performance is a function of goal level, self-focus, and perceived goal importance; (b) goal level is a function of perceptions of past performance, self-focus, and perceived goal importance; and (c) perceptions of past performance are a function of actual past performance, self-focus, and perceived goal importance. Hierarchical regression analysis, using a sample of 88 retail salespersons, revealed empirical support for the first two hypotheses. Specifically, the variables described by control theory …

An Evaluation Of The Orientation And Training Programs Of A Fast Food Franchise, Cheryl M. Donahey Jan 1987

An Evaluation Of The Orientation And Training Programs Of A Fast Food Franchise, Cheryl M. Donahey

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Very few attempts have been made to adequately evaluate training programs. The research reported here is an attempt to evaluate the effects of the revised orientation and training programs of a fast food franchise. Subjects consisted of 676 hourly employees of a Central Florida fast food franchise who completed questionnaires soliciting measures of the following perceptions: managements' consideration and structure levels and the effectiveness of the revised orientation and training programs. Modest support was found for the prediction that the revised programs would increase the employees' perception of managements' consideration. No evidence was found to support the hypotheses that employees …
