A Preliminary Examination Of Gender Differences In Graduate And Undergraduate Reading Engagement: Using Books To Supplement Students' Learning, Suzanne Clinton, Lee Tyner, Robert Epstein, Abbie Lambert Feb 2022

A Preliminary Examination Of Gender Differences In Graduate And Undergraduate Reading Engagement: Using Books To Supplement Students' Learning, Suzanne Clinton, Lee Tyner, Robert Epstein, Abbie Lambert

The Coastal Business Journal

As America's universities advance the use of technologies, including learning management systems, videos, PowerPoint, "clickers," virtual classrooms, and everything else "i" and "e," students may become over sensitized and yearn for a missing component: The focused study of reading a book. This study analyzes differences in graduate and undergraduate students, and male and female attitudes and perceptions of reading engagement involving non-textbook reading in academic courses, especially among business students. This research is based on the experiences of four professors who have incorporated (auto)biographies and practitioner books to support the growth and development of students' study of human resource management …

Playing The Lottery Games?, Johnny C. Ho, David Ang, Tzu-Liang (Bill) Tseng Feb 2022

Playing The Lottery Games?, Johnny C. Ho, David Ang, Tzu-Liang (Bill) Tseng

The Coastal Business Journal

The lottery is a huge business. In 2011, $57.6 billion worth of lottery tickets were sold in 43 states and the District of Columbia. There are three major parties (governments, lottery players, and retailers) involved in the lottery industry, plus many more stakeholders. This paper examines the lottery from the viewpoints of these three primary parties. From the lottery players' viewpoint, we show how to statistically determine the expected value of a lottery ticket and discuss when to conclude it is profitable to buy lottery tickets. We explore the question of whether lottery players are rational. State governments have, for …

Exposure To Online Classes As Determinant Of Student Perceptions, James A. Pope, Susan Rahmatian Feb 2022

Exposure To Online Classes As Determinant Of Student Perceptions, James A. Pope, Susan Rahmatian

The Coastal Business Journal

There is little research comparing the perceptions of university students who have been, and have never been, exposed to online classes. We show that about half the students surveyed, who have never taken online classes, have done so intentionally. We measure the perceptions of both groups of students along ten dimensions. The three dimensions along which the exposed students had a significantly favorable perception were a) the extent to which online classes utilize teaching materials personally created or structured by professors, b) the extent to which students feel frustrated by technology, and c) the benefit of interactions with fellow classmates.

Human Resource Management In Microenterprises: Gateway For Success, Martha Mattare, Amit J. Shah, Michael Monahan Feb 2022

Human Resource Management In Microenterprises: Gateway For Success, Martha Mattare, Amit J. Shah, Michael Monahan

The Coastal Business Journal

Micro enterprises, businesses with five or fewer employees, represent about 75% of all small business, and are often the starting point for successful firms. Why then is there a paucity of research on human resource practices in small businesses? Micro businesses are almost ignored in studies regarding human resources in business. Researchers have assumed that all small firms have the same human resource practices; however, we know this is not the case. What impact does Human Resources Management have on small businesses? Human resource shortages can negatively impact business growth in the areas of high tech employees, sales staff, and …

Importance-Performance Analysis Of Relocation Attributes In The Coastal Carolina Region, Bomi Kang, Kimberly Warne, Kay Keels Feb 2022

Importance-Performance Analysis Of Relocation Attributes In The Coastal Carolina Region, Bomi Kang, Kimberly Warne, Kay Keels

The Coastal Business Journal

Domestic migration to the Carolina coastal region has increased dramatically between 2005 and 2009. This influx has spurred substantial increases in the demand for housing, support services, employment and infrastructure. The continued increase in such services is dependent upon on-going financial support which, in turn, is contingent upon the stability and/or continued growth of the population in this region. This study identifies the social and economic factors considered to be important by these in-migrants as well as their perceptions of how well these factors perform. In addition, the study addresses the relationship between community attachment and individual migration intent. The …

Reinventing The Approach To Personality-Type And Ethical Ideology: A New Model, Paul Arsenault, Peter F. Oehlers Feb 2022

Reinventing The Approach To Personality-Type And Ethical Ideology: A New Model, Paul Arsenault, Peter F. Oehlers

The Coastal Business Journal

As unethical managerial behavior is increasing, people are looking to understand why. The result has led to a lack of trust in managers. One area being explored is managers' ethical behavior. Based on previous models, the relationship between ethical ideology (idealism & relativism) and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is examined. Results show a significant relationship between idealism and the mental function (cognitive style) and dominant auxiliary function of the MBTI. In addition, the most innovative result shows a more salient model by combining ethical ideology and the dominant-auxiliary function. This new model strengthens the relationship between personality type theory …

Extent Of Hospital Director Involvement In Strategic Management: Does Tenure Make A Difference?, Nabil A. Ibrahim, Donald P. Howard, John P. Angelidis Feb 2022

Extent Of Hospital Director Involvement In Strategic Management: Does Tenure Make A Difference?, Nabil A. Ibrahim, Donald P. Howard, John P. Angelidis

The Coastal Business Journal

Of particular interest to researchers and practitioners is the impact of board members' composition and characteristics on corporate activities. With the exception of studies focusing on the gender of board members and the inside director-outside director dichotomy, much of the research tends to treat directors as a homogeneous group. This study seeks to determine whether a relationship exists between hospital directors' length of tenure and their degree of involvement in the strategic management process. The results of a survey of 240 directors from twenty-one hospitals are analyzed. A MANOVA, followed by a series of ANOVAs revealed significant differences between the …

Micro Businesses: Where Do They Turn For Help?, Martha Mattare, Amit J. Shah, Michael Monahan Feb 2022

Micro Businesses: Where Do They Turn For Help?, Martha Mattare, Amit J. Shah, Michael Monahan

The Coastal Business Journal

Research consistently shows those entrepreneurs who obtain business assistance from various service providers are more likely to be in business over time and are more likely to experience success. Micro business, enterprises with less than five employees, have not been specifically studied in terms of how, or whether, outside business assistance was used or if it produced results. This study examined micro businesses to determine what service providers were used for business assistance and how they differ by demographics. The paper offers the implications and possible strategies for these service providers.

Performance Appraisal Comments: The Practitioner's Dilemma, Treena G. Finney Feb 2022

Performance Appraisal Comments: The Practitioner's Dilemma, Treena G. Finney

The Coastal Business Journal

Employees often pay more attention to written comments than to numerical ratings they receive during their performance appraisal process. However, these comments, while desired by many employees, may actually hurt employee performance. Despite extensive research on performance appraisal ratings, practitioners have little guidance for managing an appraisal process such that comments are used in productive ways. This article addresses this gap. In particular, this article identifies how comments are used, when comments harm performance, features of comments that make them actionable or useful for improving performance, and recommendations for practitioners for constructively integrating comments into performance appraisal systems.

Employee Perceptions Of Individual And Organizational Commitment To The Green Movement And Their Perceived Impacts Between Male And Female Subjects, Susan M. L. Zee, Lillian Y. Fok, Sandra J. Hartman Feb 2022

Employee Perceptions Of Individual And Organizational Commitment To The Green Movement And Their Perceived Impacts Between Male And Female Subjects, Susan M. L. Zee, Lillian Y. Fok, Sandra J. Hartman

The Coastal Business Journal

In this research, we find support for a proposed set of linkages among employee perceptions of organizational green orientation, individual green orientation, and impacts of the green movement on organizational performance among male and female subjects. We report significant MANOVA results indicating differences between male and female subjects, with female subjects showing a general pattern of higher alignment with the green movement. Moreover, our examination of relationships among the scales used in this study indicates that the patterns are not consistent for males and females. Females consistently report more and more positive relationships. We discuss differences, consider possible causes, and …

A Strategic View Of Resources, Lila L. Carden Feb 2022

A Strategic View Of Resources, Lila L. Carden

The Coastal Business Journal

The resource-based view of a business is focused on resources as strengths within an organization that can generate sustained competitive advantage. The strengths are assembled and mobilized via strategic human resource management activities to support the probability of success. This study provides information to business owners as to whether investment in salaries paid to employees and business owners' experiences will be instrumental in predicting business success. Findings suggest salaries paid to employees and business owners' experiences are statistically significant and somewhat practically significant in predicting business success as defined by revenues.

The Minor League Experience: What Drives Attendance At South Atlantic League Baseball Games?, Rodney J. Paul, Michael Toma, Andrew P. Weinbach Feb 2022

The Minor League Experience: What Drives Attendance At South Atlantic League Baseball Games?, Rodney J. Paul, Michael Toma, Andrew P. Weinbach

The Coastal Business Journal

An examination of the determinants of minor league baseball attendance in the South Atlantic League is performed through regression analysis. Potential determinants included in the regression model include demographic variables, team performance variables, and dummies for various categories of promotions. Overall, South Atlantic League baseball appears to be an inferior good, fans do not significantly respond to winning teams, fans do respond favorably to high-scoring games, and promotional events play a major role in attendance. The events that are shown to have the biggest impact at the gate are fireworks and concerts. It appears that the overall entertainment experience, not …

Economic Calculation And Managerial Decisions: A Misesian Examination Of The Successes And Failures Of Total Quality Management, William Anderson, Amit J. Shah, Thomas Hawk, Jaquelynne Mclellan Feb 2022

Economic Calculation And Managerial Decisions: A Misesian Examination Of The Successes And Failures Of Total Quality Management, William Anderson, Amit J. Shah, Thomas Hawk, Jaquelynne Mclellan

The Coastal Business Journal

While the Total Quality Management programs that were extremely popular a decade ago had many successes, there also were a large number of failures. This paper lays out some theoretical reasons for why these failures might have occurred. Our methodology is the application of the theories of the "Austrian" economists, including Ludwig von Mises, F.A. Hayek, and Murray N. Rothbard. We apply both the Austrian theory of the firm, as well as the economic calculation theories that Mises and Hayek developed, in order to explain why some TQM failures might have occurred.

An Assessment Of Undergraduate Work Ethic Regarding Employment And Education, C. Mitchell Adrian Feb 2022

An Assessment Of Undergraduate Work Ethic Regarding Employment And Education, C. Mitchell Adrian

The Coastal Business Journal

This manuscript conducts a study of student work ethic and provides a comparison between the employment work ethic and academic work ethic of undergraduates. Findings suggest that while overall work ethic for both academics and employment can be considered "high," the concept of doing more than is required in academics is not highly valued by students. Unexpectedly, it was found that males and females exhibit significantly different work ethics regarding academics. Females, more than males, have a level of work ethic toward academics that is very similar to their work ethic toward employment.

Political Apathy And The Youth Vote: A Survey Of Undergraduate Students, Dennis S. Edwards Feb 2022

Political Apathy And The Youth Vote: A Survey Of Undergraduate Students, Dennis S. Edwards

The Coastal Business Journal

Data from past national elections have illustrated that the 18-24 age group is the most apathetic to the democratic process. This paper surveys a broad percentage of students at a midsize regional university in the southeastern United States. The survey is done in order to measure voter registration and participation, civic awareness, and the students' average political leaning. I observe that while voting-age students are rather apathetic, they performed better than the national 18-24 age group in the presidential election of 2000. Upon surveying a small sample of faculty at the same university, it appears that the positive correlations of …

Case Study As A Suitable Method To Research Strategy As Practice Perspective, Rosalia Lavarda, Christiane Bellucci

The Qualitative Report

The goal of this study was to comprehend how case studies are used to analyze strategy as practice perspective phenomena inside organizations. Through a narrative review, associated with a systematic analysis of the literature, we revisited papers published in high index management journals that have presented the case study as method to analyze phenomena from the strategy as practice perspective. We understand that the case study method was used appropriate to analyze in-depth phenomena concerning the perspective of strategy as practice. Both, the method, and the strategy as practice perspective look at the phenomena in their singularity. This study contributes …

Food consumption in tourism is linked with creating sustainable experiences and promoting a new way of being fed and eating. This research note analyzes the relationship between new trends in food consumption and food tourism. From a descriptive approach, it reveals the meaningful connection between producers and consumers. Food tourism stakeholders should consider applying segmentation techniques to personalize its offer and create unique food experiences. Further research is required, especially concerning the Gen Z lifestyles and its impact on the future of food tourism.

Regenerative Tourism Model: Challenges Of Adapting Concepts From Natural Science To Tourism Industry, Asif Hussain, Marie Haley Feb 2022

Regenerative Tourism Model: Challenges Of Adapting Concepts From Natural Science To Tourism Industry, Asif Hussain, Marie Haley

Journal of Sustainability and Resilience

The study proposes a regenerative tourism model. The application of the natural science ideas of regeneration needs to be clarified before the tourism industry can adopt a regenerative tourism model. Without such clarification, there is a high risk of ‘green washing’ and inappropriate adaption of a regenerative model. The borrowing of natural science to industry and its application in social sciences confuse the essence of the true concept of regeneration. In a regenerative agriculture context restoring a holistic system that mimics nature and includes social and economic spheres contributes to improving the whole system. When a social system aims to …

International And Domestic Tourist Hunting: A Critical Review On Environmental And Socio-Economic Implications In Sub-Saharan Africa, Abel A. Mamboleo Feb 2022

International And Domestic Tourist Hunting: A Critical Review On Environmental And Socio-Economic Implications In Sub-Saharan Africa, Abel A. Mamboleo

Journal of Sustainability and Resilience

Tourist hunting is a regular consumptive wildlife utilization occurring within and outside core protected areas for trophies and leisure attainments. It is one of the most renowned tourism undertakings which involve the killing of animals for recreational purposes. In essence, hunters acquire trophies for different purposes including production of decorations and traditional medicines. Currently, there is a hot debate on whether to continues or cease tourist hunting as animal activists, some conservation stakeholders believe that hunting is cruel to animals and threat to ecosystems. In this paper, the author reviewed and analyzed various documented evidences which opponents and proponents of …

Tourism Observatories For Measuring The Covid-19 Impact On Tourism, Georgia Zouni Dr., Stavros Hatzimarinakis, Sotirios Varelas Feb 2022

Tourism Observatories For Measuring The Covid-19 Impact On Tourism, Georgia Zouni Dr., Stavros Hatzimarinakis, Sotirios Varelas

Journal of Sustainability and Resilience

Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) began at the end of 2019 and since then has led to a period of global transformations and changes for all aspects of the economy, tourism included. A fundamental action to mitigate the socio-economic impacts of COVID-19 and accelerate recovery is the setup of local sustainable tourism observatories (UNWTO, 2020). This paper proposes a system theory-based framework for measuring the COVID-19 impact on tourism at regional and local level, using a mixed qualitative and quantitative methodology combined with the UNWTO and United Nations’s recommendations for COVID-19 Tourism Recovery.

Microfinance And The Role Of Accounting In Supporting Family-Resilience-Based Women’S Empowerment, Desi Adhariani Feb 2022

Microfinance And The Role Of Accounting In Supporting Family-Resilience-Based Women’S Empowerment, Desi Adhariani

The Qualitative Report

This action research aims to explore the issues of microfinance and women’s empowerment in urban Indonesia, and the role of accounting on the issues. Drawing on critical accounting theory, this study employs feminism and empowerment theory based on Foucault’s work to investigate the activities of female micro-entrepreneurs who are members of a Sharia cooperative. The study was conducted using an action research method for eight months with observation and interviews with 40 female micro-entrepreneurs. It is found that the lending scheme applied in the cooperative follows the principle of family resilience. In this context, the empowerment is not aimed at …

Research On Ternary Brand Trust Components In The Inter-Sphere Culture Context: Chinese Brands In Indian Market, Yan Han Feb 2022

Research On Ternary Brand Trust Components In The Inter-Sphere Culture Context: Chinese Brands In Indian Market, Yan Han

Fordham Dissertations and Theses

In the information age, the cultural perspectives associated with brand trust have undergone fundamental changes. Hyperconnectivity in the digital era has transformed social interaction between consumers and firms, leading to the creation of a sphere between the digital spheres where brands construct cultural meaning and thereby influence community members in the spheres. This sphere is dynamic, and perpetually influenced by technology to reach an equilibrium where an inter-sphere cultural phenomenon is formed. The high volume and velocity of information generated with technological advances have led to the blurring and broadening of brand boundaries to create mega-sized brand communities, …

Systematizing Dark Personality Traits Within Broader Models Of Personality, Radosław Rogoza, Christopher Marcin Kowalski, Donald H. Saklofske, Julie Aitken Schermer Feb 2022

Systematizing Dark Personality Traits Within Broader Models Of Personality, Radosław Rogoza, Christopher Marcin Kowalski, Donald H. Saklofske, Julie Aitken Schermer

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

Previous research has attempted to derive arguments for the categorization of traits as ‘dark’ without theoretical justification or rationalizations. We begin with a description of current conceptualizations of the darkness of traits followed by a new perspective on the catalogue of dark personality traits and the theoretical boundaries of different shades of darkness within the broader personality structure. Finally, we address the redundancy problem observed within the field on dark personality traits. Our analyses are offered as a guide to future research towards a more parsimonious and useful set of criteria (a “compass” of sorts) for inclusion within the “dark” …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Human activity needs to become sustainable, and businesses have a massive role to play in it. Important progress has occurred. The Coronavirus pandemic has reinforced the importance of sustainability and resilience. Businesses have become champions of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), both by integrating them into their core activities and by developing strategies and metrics to achieve them. Despite this progress, more must be done to achieve sustainability targets on a timetable that is relevant. While the narratives of businesses are often exciting, their follow-through with implementation remains limited. So too is information on successful practices, conceptual knowledge …

Applying Coleman’S Boat In Management Research: Opportunities And Challenges In Bridging Macro And Micro Theory, Amanda Cowen, Floor Rink, Ilya R. P. Cuypers, Denis Gregoire, Ingo Weller Feb 2022

Applying Coleman’S Boat In Management Research: Opportunities And Challenges In Bridging Macro And Micro Theory, Amanda Cowen, Floor Rink, Ilya R. P. Cuypers, Denis Gregoire, Ingo Weller

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Over the years, ongoing conversations in Academy of Management Journal—and the broader management literature—have emphasized the value of research that bridges the macro and micro domains (Hitt, Beamish, Jackson, & Mathieu, 2007; Molloy, Ployhart, & Wright, 2011; Morgeson & Hofmann, 1999; Paruchuri, Perry-Smith, Chattopadhyay, & Shaw, 2018). Calls for cross-boundary work typically argue that bridging these two domains is required to understand and solve the complex management issues that societies face (George, Howard-Grenville, Joshi, & Tihanyi, 2016; House, Rousseau, & Thomas-Hunt, 1995; Kozlowski & Klein, 2000). Responses to the organizational challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, or to societal problems …

Why, How, And When Divergent Perceptions Become Dysfunctional In Organizations: A Motivated Cognition Perspective, Zhanna Lyubykh, Laurie J. Barclay, Marion Fortin, Michael R. Bashshur, Malika Khakhar Feb 2022

Why, How, And When Divergent Perceptions Become Dysfunctional In Organizations: A Motivated Cognition Perspective, Zhanna Lyubykh, Laurie J. Barclay, Marion Fortin, Michael R. Bashshur, Malika Khakhar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Decades of research has demonstrated that people can arrive at starkly different perceptions in the same social situations. Divergent perceptions are not inherently dysfunctional. However, if divergent perceptions are not managed effectively, they can have deleterious effects that can undermine functioning in the workplace. Drawing on a motivated cognition perspective, we outline why divergent perceptions may emerge as well as overview the benefits and drawbacks of divergent perceptions in organizational contexts. Next, we highlight the complexities associated with divergent perceptions in the workplace, including why, how, and when divergent perceptions may become dysfunctional. We also showcase theoretical insights from a …

A Foot In The Door: Field-Experiments On Entrepreneurs’ Network Activation Strategies For Investor Referrals, Jared Nai, Yimin Lin, Reddi Kotha, Vissa Balagopal Feb 2022

A Foot In The Door: Field-Experiments On Entrepreneurs’ Network Activation Strategies For Investor Referrals, Jared Nai, Yimin Lin, Reddi Kotha, Vissa Balagopal

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We investigate entrepreneurial network activation—the processes by which entrepreneurs select specific contacts from their existing personal network and persuade the selected contacts to provide referrals to access targeted early-stage investors (venture capitalists or angel-investors). We differentiate between selection of entrepreneur-centric contacts versus investor-centric contacts. We also distinguish between persuasion tactics that induce contacts' cooperation through promises of reciprocity versus offers of monetary incentives. We conducted two field-experiments in India and one in Singapore. Our primary field-experiment involved 42 Singapore-based entrepreneurs seeking referrals from 684 network contacts to reach a panel of four investors. Our evidence suggests that selecting investor-centric contacts …

Getting To Yes: The Makings Of Paid Leave In Massachusetts, Christa Kelleher, Laurie Nsiah-Jefferson, Priyanka Kabir, Lillian Hunter, Cassandra M. Porter, Center For Women In Politics And Public Policy, University Of Massachusetts Boston

Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy

Considered one of the strongest paid family and medical leave laws in the nation, the paid leave law adopted in Massachusetts in 2018 was notable for the depth and range of robust caregiving supports and protections for workers. But just as notable is how the law came to be. After all, paid leave bills had been filed for years in Massachusetts. Decades in fact. Yet until 2018, there had been limited movement in the legislature to establish a statewide program. What led to the passage of paid leave legislation in Massachusetts with approval from a Republican Governor? What factors influenced …
