Exploring The Divergent Social Dimensions Of Ceo Narcissism On Internal Firm Outcomes, Andrew Brandon Blake Aug 2022

Exploring The Divergent Social Dimensions Of Ceo Narcissism On Internal Firm Outcomes, Andrew Brandon Blake

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this study, I move away from the common clinical conception of narcissism in management to a novel two-dimensional concept and measurement of narcissism. Because these dimensions are shown to have divergent motives, goals, social strategies, and behaviors, I theorize that these differences in narcissism will have diverging effects on the firm. Then, I shift the conceptual focus of CEO narcissism research from the CEO as an agentic decision-maker seeking external praise for firm consequences to an implicit social strategist who prioritizes short-term interpersonal interactions in service of narcissistic supply. I examine four internal outcomes likely to be influenced by …

Entrepreneurial Imaginativeness: A Janusian-Cognition Lens On The Role Of Multicultural Experience, Robert J. Pidduck, Daniel R. Clark, Yejun Zhang Aug 2022

Entrepreneurial Imaginativeness: A Janusian-Cognition Lens On The Role Of Multicultural Experience, Robert J. Pidduck, Daniel R. Clark, Yejun Zhang

Management Faculty Publications

A burgeoning stream of research is emerging on the importance of entrepreneurial imaginativeness in the new venture development process. Empirical studies so far have focused predominantly on its ideation-based outcomes—the number and quality of ideas produced. Knowledge remains scant, however, on its antecedent mechanisms and mediating role in nascent venturing. Drawing from a novel Janusian-thinking lens, we integrate another growing research stream in entrepreneurship—multicultural experience—to probe how the creative, social, and practical cognitive schemas underpinning entrepreneurial imaginativeness can be cultivated through dimensions of perhaps the most distinctive form of cultural exposure: living abroad. We find evidence across two studies that …

A New Studio Era: How Netflix Is Becoming A Threat To The Film Industry, Al Kasper Aug 2022

A New Studio Era: How Netflix Is Becoming A Threat To The Film Industry, Al Kasper

University Honors Theses

Movie streaming services have become an increasingly popular distribution method due to their widespread accessibility to film content across the globe. Netflix is the biggest competitor of movie streaming services and has led the charge in creating original content for its customers. With many of these streaming services creating their own content, both Hollywood and independent studios are being introduced to a new competitor in their market: studios that stream their own content. While this may seem to be an issue only within the industry, there are concerns about another oligarchy of studios being created out of these streaming services …

Power Allocation And Reform Efficiency: The Distortions In Urban Renovations In China, 1992-2012, Gang He Aug 2022

Power Allocation And Reform Efficiency: The Distortions In Urban Renovations In China, 1992-2012, Gang He

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The world has been paying close attention to the achievements of China's industrialization and urbanization since it started reform and opening up in 1978. However, there have been considerable controversies about the repetitive development plans in major Chinese cities and the rough demolition and reconstruction in old urban areas. Systematic explanations for the underlying causes and in-depth studies are limited, especially on the division of powers, responsibilities, and interests between the government and the market especially from 1992 to 2012, when old city reconstruction swept across China. This paper focuses on the temporal and regional differences in land property rights …

Effects Of Ceo Social Networks On Firm Innovation Strategy, Jinxin Yang Aug 2022

Effects Of Ceo Social Networks On Firm Innovation Strategy, Jinxin Yang

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Prior research studying the effects of CEOs on innovation are primarily based on Upper Echelon Theory, which indicates the intrapersonal characteristics among executives in their experiences, values, and personalities could be indispensable antecedents for firm innovation, while the implications of their interpersonal differences have hardly yet received enough attention they deserve. To advance CEO social networks and innovation research, therefore, we attempt to provide some insightful findings through this dissertation series with two papers. In the first paper, we examine the general relationships between two important CEO social network characteristics (network centrality and structural holes) and firm exploratory innovation, and …

Conspicuous Asceticism: Collapsing Consumers' Hungry Ghosts, Ash Zareian Aug 2022

Conspicuous Asceticism: Collapsing Consumers' Hungry Ghosts, Ash Zareian

Theses and Dissertations

The author investigates an emerging construct called conspicuous asceticism expositioned from a narcissism-centric view. The understanding of this construct is approached by drawing an idiomatic semantic parallel in opposition to conspicuous consumption and by utilizing its current theoretical framework of narcissism. Moreover, this paper seeks to extend conspicuous consumption’s theoretical framework as synonymous with the construct of compulsive consumption. Furthermore, I illustrate that consumers must transcend narcissism through engaging in treatment modalities requisite to operationalize a pioneering effort in which consumers can engage in marketing campaign efforts to advertise conspicuous ascetic contexts. This dissertation gleans from extant literature in sociology, …

The Person Behind The Team: A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Role Of The Sport Supervisor In Ncaa Division I Intercollegiate Athletics., Ehren R. Green

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As organizational connectors, athletic administrators who serve as sport supervisors, are integral to the success of intercollegiate athletic departments. However, little is known about the role of sport supervisor or the relationship between sport supervisors and head coaches. Thus, this study seeks to define and better understand the role of the sport supervisor in intercollegiate athletics and explore the relationship between the sport supervisor and the head coach. Through a descriptive phenomenological approach, 22 participants (11 sport supervisors and 11 head coaches) from NCAA Division I institutions were interviewed. Role theory guided the defining of the role while leader-member exchange …

Reconciling Conflicting Institutional Logics: Community Reinvestment Officers At The Intersection Of Public Policy And Market Forces, Meredith Mckee Adkins Aug 2022

Reconciling Conflicting Institutional Logics: Community Reinvestment Officers At The Intersection Of Public Policy And Market Forces, Meredith Mckee Adkins

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although the public policy literature has traditionally focused on public sector agencies’ roles in the policy implementation process, private sector managers who oversee regulatory mandates for their organizations are also policy actors. These actors operate between multiple conflicting field-level institutional logics that create demands that they must reconcile through their work. In the banking sector, the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), enacted in 1977, and its associated policies are monitored by the banking regulatory agencies and implemented by the senior managers responsible for these mandates at regulated financial institutions. Simultaneously with their responsibility for the policy mission of the CRA, CRA …

Two Essays On The Effects Of Ceo Social Activism, Habib Islam Aug 2022

Two Essays On The Effects Of Ceo Social Activism, Habib Islam

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The first essay theorizes and quantifies the effects of CEO activism on firms’ financial performance. We examine this relationship within the framework of screening theory. We find that CEO social activism generally leads to adverse investor reactions. This negative effect is most prominent when there is interdimensional incongruence in CEO social activism messages. In addition, we find that the negative effect of CEO social activism is moderated by organizational characteristics that resolve incongruence caused by disparate signals.

The second essay seeks to understand how a CEO’s social activism influences corporate social performance. We hypothesize that CEO social activism will have …

Where We Are From Matters: Assessing The Impact Of Immigrants On Firm Environmental Performance, Narae Lee Aug 2022

Where We Are From Matters: Assessing The Impact Of Immigrants On Firm Environmental Performance, Narae Lee

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study examines the impact of immigrant populations on firm environmental performance. Leveraging a longitudinal dataset of more than 11,000 manufacturing facilities in the US in which I match the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) facility toxic emissions data with the location’s census immigration data, I document the negative impact of local immigrant populations on a facility’s environmental performance, which strengthens as heterogeneity among immigrant increases. I argue that this is because a more heterogeneous community is less cohesive and hence less capable of organizing effective pressures against pollution. Further, I show that because co-nationality links create unique bonds between the …

Who Is More Likely To Be Delinquent In Their Mortgage Payments Among Homeowners? The Role Of Financial Literacy, Ellie Donne Hansen Aug 2022

Who Is More Likely To Be Delinquent In Their Mortgage Payments Among Homeowners? The Role Of Financial Literacy, Ellie Donne Hansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Homeownership is a way for families to build wealth and marks status attainment. Despite the many benefits of homeownership, homeowners who are delinquent on their mortgages lose the effective means of wealth accumulation and may trigger the beginning of the foreclosure process. There is evidence that homeowners with appropriate levels of financial literacy have a lower likelihood of mortgage delinquency.

Using data from the 2018 National Financial Capability Study (NFCS), the main purpose of this study was to examine what factors are associated with mortgage delinquency among homeowners. This study also examined to what extent financial literacy plays a role …

Covid-19 And Hospitality Services: The Role Of Information Sources, Believability, Fear, And Behavioral Intentions, Shaniel Bernard, Imran Rahman, Sijun Liu, Luana Nanu Aug 2022

Covid-19 And Hospitality Services: The Role Of Information Sources, Believability, Fear, And Behavioral Intentions, Shaniel Bernard, Imran Rahman, Sijun Liu, Luana Nanu

Journal of Global Hospitality and Tourism

Based on the Social Amplification of Risk Framework (SARF) and crisis decision theory, this study examined the influence of trust in different types of information sources on the believability of COVID-19 information (BCI). Furthermore, the influence of BCI on fearfulness and the corresponding influence of fearfulness on the intention to use hospitality services and stay at home are analyzed. Structural equations modeling, using data from 1,017 American consumers, successfully confirmed the significant influences of trust in media and government on BCI and the corresponding positive effect of BCI on fearfulness. Additionally, the negative effects of fearfulness on intentions to visit …

Exploring The Assetisation And Financialisation Of Non-Fungible Tokens: Opportunities And Regulatory Implications, Iris H. Y. Chiu, J.G. Allen Aug 2022

Exploring The Assetisation And Financialisation Of Non-Fungible Tokens: Opportunities And Regulatory Implications, Iris H. Y. Chiu, J.G. Allen

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This article explores the emerging phenomenon of use cases for Non-fungible Tokens (NFTs) in novel forms of crypto-finance, a stage we call “NFT financialisation”, that can be developed from stages of consumption and commoditisation of NFTs, which are increasingly observed. Despite the emerging contests regarding property rights conferred by NFTs, the needs for commoditisation and financialisation in NFT markets would likely shape the delineation and framing of such rights in order for users to exploit the asset potential of NFTs. We argue that an institutional response is timely and beneficial for NFT financialisation. Financial regulatory governance can provide the institutions …

Two’S A Crowd? Implications Of Economic Geography For Corporate Governance, Matthew Farrell Aug 2022

Two’S A Crowd? Implications Of Economic Geography For Corporate Governance, Matthew Farrell

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

Although literature on corporate governance and economic geography often explores similar constructs, theories, and other matters, little work has been done examining their joint effects. This two-essay dissertation integrates these literatures in order to partially fill this gap by asking the following research questions:

1.) Do geographic proximity and multiple directorships function as substitutes or complements?

2.) How is the governance of highly innovative firms affected by the presence of Marshallian externalities?

While some scholars suggest that multiple directorships lead to board members neglecting their advisory and monitoring obligations, others have embraced the idea that holding multiple board seats can …

The Influence Of Sponsorship Engagement On Brand Loyalty: An Analysis Of The On-Site And Social Media Activational Communications., Achyut Kulkarni Aug 2022

The Influence Of Sponsorship Engagement On Brand Loyalty: An Analysis Of The On-Site And Social Media Activational Communications., Achyut Kulkarni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of sponsorship engagement (enacted via sponsorship activations) on consumers’ responses to sponsors’ activational communications. Specifically, this study aimed at examining if interaction and engagement with their team’s sponsors’ activational communication on-site, as well as on social media, influenced loyalty towards the sponsors. The study utilized service-dominant (S-D) logic as the theoretical framework. The S-D logic perspective recognizes that consumer behavior is centered on the interactive experiences between a consumer and an object, in this case the sponsor, and that a level of consumer interest and/or personal relevance with respect to …

Economics Undergraduate Honors Theses

Agriculture is the bedrock of the Belize economy, but is plagued by routine issues. These problems hurt not only the economy of Belize, but also the health and well being of its citizens. By working with the Ministry of Agriculture my team surveyed the Stann Creek district of Belize to address these issues and provide much needed information to local farmers.

Seeing Red, Seeing Blue? Exploring The Influence Of Political Signals On Investor Perceptions And Behavior, Sergei Kolomeitsev Aug 2022

Seeing Red, Seeing Blue? Exploring The Influence Of Political Signals On Investor Perceptions And Behavior, Sergei Kolomeitsev

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the current political climate, understanding political identity alignment or misalignment between stakeholders is critical. Indeed, today’s climate of political polarization likely not only affects political behavior or social interactions but is likely to spill over into resource allocation behavior by groups and individuals. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the influence of political signals between the investor and the entrepreneur in shaping an investor’s funding decision. Further, while the funding outcomes relating to political signals are critical, it is likewise imperative to advance our understanding of the mechanisms shaping investor perceptions. Thus, this dissertation investigates key mechanisms …

Veteran Workplace Identity: Conceptualizing And Measuring Veteran Identity In The Organizational Context, Sarah Villanueva Aug 2022

Veteran Workplace Identity: Conceptualizing And Measuring Veteran Identity In The Organizational Context, Sarah Villanueva

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Military veterans make up just 5% of the U.S. workforce, but their outcomes are of particular interest to society and business organizations. Despite social concern and respect for veterans, little management theory explains veteransâ?? differentiated outcomes in employment experiences and labor market outcomes. This dissertation considers the fundamental question of what it means to be a military veteran in the workplace context and uses mixed methods techniques to consider veteran workplace identity (VWI). Through qualitative analysis, I found VWI was a multi-dimensional, work-related identity. This definition was then used to develop a twelve-item scale and assess its psychometric properties as …

Towards Pedagogy Supporting Ethics In Modelling, Marie Oldfield Jul 2022

Towards Pedagogy Supporting Ethics In Modelling, Marie Oldfield

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Education for concepts such as ethics and societal responsibility that are critical in building robust and applicable mathematical and statistical models do currently exist in isolation but have not been incorporated into the mainstream curricula at the school or university level. This is partially due to the split between fields (such as mathematics, statistics, and computer science) in an educational setting but also the speed with which education is able to keep up with industry and its requirements. I argue that principles and frameworks of socially responsible modelling should begin at school level and that this would mean that ethics …

Covid-19 For Crowdfunding: Catalyst Or Deterrent? Evidence From Russia, Evgeny Torkanovskiy, Alexander Voinov Jul 2022

Covid-19 For Crowdfunding: Catalyst Or Deterrent? Evidence From Russia, Evgeny Torkanovskiy, Alexander Voinov

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

This paper explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on crowdfunding by analyzing a 2-year sample of 7,024 rewards-based crowdfunding campaigns on the two major Russian platforms. The study employs a digital methods approach to demand and supply and multiple regression analysis. The findings show that COVID-19 and the associated lockdown had no immediate and straightforward effect on the crowdfunding sector, neither on backers nor on campaigns’ initiators. Thus, the crowdfunding sector unlike some other investment classes remains resilient to the global pandemic. Beyond that, empirical analysis revealed the undescribed phenomenon of sponsors’ readiness to finance projects being highly seasonal …

What Is Fast Fashion?, Morgan Laster Jul 2022

What Is Fast Fashion?, Morgan Laster

Sociology Summer Fellows

When most people think of fast fashion, they probably picture a company like Shein or Forever21. But what exactly is fast fashion? And when did it first emerge as a term? I tracked the evolution of what is called fast fashion by examining different sources in which the term has been mentioned. Many have accepted that the New York Times coined the term in 1989, but I discovered even earlier mentions, suggesting the importance of fact-checking widely accepted attributions. In total, I gathered 75 definitions of fast fashion and combined them into a composite definition: fast fashion is when designers …

The Performance Of Higher Education Institutions In The Arab World From A Strategic Perspective: Challenges And Possible Solutions, Sam Alfoqahaa, Abdulnaser Nour

Journal of the Association of Arab Universities for Research in Higher Education مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للبحوث في التعليم العالي

The study aims to investigate the determinants of the performance of higher education institutions in the Arab world, in addition to proposing possible solutions to these determinants. These determinants include the weak level of local, regional and international cooperation between universities, the limited actual spending on scientific research projects, and the reluctance of the private sector to invest in scientific research projects adopted by universities, weak individual performance appraisal systems, market competition among higher education institutions, and limited capacity building programs for academic cadres. The study employed literature review methodology, where these strategic performance determinants are analyzed and conceptualized. Based …

Knowledge Overconfidence Is Associated With Anti-Consensus Views On Controversial Scientific Issues, Nicholas Light, Philip M. Fernbach, Nathaniel Rabb, Mugur V. Geana, Steven A. Sloman

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Public attitudes that are in opposition to scientific consensus can be disastrous and include rejection of vaccines and opposition to climate change mitigation policies. Five studies examine the interrelationships between opposition to expert consensus on controversial scientific issues, how much people actually know about these issues, and how much they think they know. Across seven critical issues that enjoy substantial scientific consensus, as well as attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccines and mitigation measures like mask wearing and social distancing, results indicate that those with the highest levels of opposition have the lowest levels of objective knowledge but the highest levels of …

Factors Influencing The Adoption Of Smart-Home Appliances: Users' Perspectives, Prakash Shahi Jul 2022

Factors Influencing The Adoption Of Smart-Home Appliances: Users' Perspectives, Prakash Shahi

Dissertations

Smart appliances will be a significant part of the annual $300 billion smart-home market by 2025. Their use is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of 31% for the foreseeable future. Currently, 12-16% of households use smart-home products in the U.S., including thermostats, TVs, refrigerators, coffee machines, garage door openers, and vision-equipped doorbells. Smart appliances provide significant benefits to us over traditional appliances. Smart appliances simplify our lives by automating various tasks in our homes and allowing us to monitor and control them remotely from our offices, grocery stores, and wherever we may be.

Despite the usefulness …

Public History Is Now, Sarah E. Dougher Jul 2022

Public History Is Now, Sarah E. Dougher

Amplify: A Journal of Writing-as-Activism

A walking tour of downtown Portland in August 2021 raises questions for the writer about the purpose of “memory activism,” its relation to writing-as-activism. Drawing on critiques of urbanist Jane Jacobs and interrogating the concept of “reckoning,” the essay explores ways in which the streetscape and people there can deliver meaning and pose questions about systemic racism and unsheltered existence.

Security Simulations In Undergraduate Education: A Review, Joseph Simpson, Aaron Brantly Jul 2022

Security Simulations In Undergraduate Education: A Review, Joseph Simpson, Aaron Brantly

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Several decades of research in simulation and gamification in higher education shows that simulations are highly effective in improving a range of outcomes for students including declarative knowledge and interest in the topic being taught. While there appears to be a broad array of options to provide education in an undergraduate setting related to security, no previous reviews have explored computer-based simulations covering all facets of security. Given the increasing importance and adoption of interdisciplinary educational programs, it is important to take stock of simulations as a tool to broaden the range of problems, perspectives, and solutions presented to students. …
