Organizational And Management Characteristics Of Peace Groups, Mary Anna Culleton Colwell Jan 1989

Organizational And Management Characteristics Of Peace Groups, Mary Anna Culleton Colwell

Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The contemporary American peace movement is a mixture of many small and a few large organizations pursuing a wide range of goals. There has been almost no organizational research focused on these peace movement organizations (PMOs) or detailed studies of the goals, values, and activities of a large sample of PMOs.

The activity of these varied PMOs has had limited impact on public policy. Some authors cite the strength of external forces or the conservative American political culture as the key factors in this relative lack of success. There are few facts with which to evaluate these or …

Canada's Accounting Elite: 1880-1930, Alan John Richardson Jan 1989

Canada's Accounting Elite: 1880-1930, Alan John Richardson

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper provides an analysis of elite accounting practitioners during the formative years of the Canadian accounting profession (1880-1930). The social characteristics of this group in comparison with the Canadian population and the links between the accounting elite and other elite groups in society are used to evaluate the extent to which the profession achieved democratic ideals of access and social mobility for all members of society. The operation of the accounting profession as a democratic institution is argued to be an important aspect of the profession's claim to serve the public interest.

Kuhnian Interpretation Of The Historical Evolution Of Accounting, Barry E. Cushing Jan 1989

Kuhnian Interpretation Of The Historical Evolution Of Accounting, Barry E. Cushing

Accounting Historians Journal

Distinct parallels exist between the historical evolution of scientific disciplines, as explained in Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, and the historical evolution of the accounting discipline. These parallels become apparent when accounting's dominant paradigm is interpreted to be the double-entry bookkeeping model. Following this interpretation, the extensive articulation of the double-entry model over the past four centuries may be seen to closely resemble the normal science of Kuhn's theory. Further parallels become apparent when Kuhn's concept of the disciplinary crises that precede scientific revolutions is compared to developments in the accounting discipline over the past 25 years. This …

Medieval Traders As International Change Agents: A Comparison With Twentieth Century International Accounting Firms, Larry M. Parker Jan 1989

Medieval Traders As International Change Agents: A Comparison With Twentieth Century International Accounting Firms, Larry M. Parker

Accounting Historians Journal

The International Accounting Standards Committee's (IASC) exposure draft on "Comparability of Financial Statements" has increased the awareness of the need for international changes in accounting standards. Since the IASC cannot mandate these changes, the accounting community needs to learn how to communicate, adopt and implement changes. This paper discusses an important aspect of the change process, the change agent. The first part of the paper presents an historical example of an important group of international change agents, the Jewish traders of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance. Parallels are then drawn between the Medieval Jewish traders and modern international accounting …

Analysis Of Corporate Culture And Community Relations: A Case Study Of Ibm, Lisa V. Sukovaty-Gordon Jan 1989

Analysis Of Corporate Culture And Community Relations: A Case Study Of Ibm, Lisa V. Sukovaty-Gordon

Graduate Research Papers

The basis for study of corporate culture grew from prior sociological and anthropological research. Etzioni (1964) found organizations which incorporate human resource technique in establishing goals were least likely to alienate their employees and were likely to produce desired responses. Etzioni's method for determining an organization's goals was through "inspection of interviews, minutes from board meetings, organization documents, division of labor, and allocation of resources (1964, p.6)." The purpose of cultures as defined by Etzioni should be to "provide a supportive setting for developing modern organizations and theme worldliness (1964, p.108-109)."

A Study Of Productivity Levels Under Theory X And Theory Y Management Styles, Kevin R. Hranicka Jan 1989

A Study Of Productivity Levels Under Theory X And Theory Y Management Styles, Kevin R. Hranicka

Theses

This thesis will focus on management and the effect of management orientation and style upon work group productivity.

Researchers have attempted to find methods for managers to use to increase employee work output or productivity for decades. As early as the beginning of the nineteenth century industrialists were experimenting with different methods of operation and organization in the hopes of raising output levels and increasing worker satisfaction. In the last fifty years management styles and employee productivity have played an ever increasingly important role in the economy as society has continued to institutionalize its needs and its providers.

This change …

Collaborative Approaches To The Sociopolitical Environment: The Emergence Of Issues Management Alliances, Douglas R. Austrom, Lawrence J. Lad Jan 1989

Collaborative Approaches To The Sociopolitical Environment: The Emergence Of Issues Management Alliances, Douglas R. Austrom, Lawrence J. Lad

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Increasing turbulence in the sociopolitical environment is reshaping the environmental management strategies employed by business and other institutions. New expectations of the role of business in society, changing demographics, critical social problems such as spiraling health care costs, educational reform and child care, and environmental degradation are posing serious challenges to business organizations and society as a whole. Private, public, and independent sector institutions have initiated a wide variety of collaborative, multi-organizational approaches to issues management which we describe as issues management alliances (IMAs). Known by a myriad of labels such as public-private partnerships, innovating organizations, community development corporations, and …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

Out of nothing, something. ROBERT WEXELBLATT examines the meaning of the creative act and scrutinizes the first sentences of major works to illustrate the writer's power to fashion time and place and character in the choice, juxtaposition, and concatenation of words. Now Chairperson of the Division of Humanities at Boston University, Wexelblatt writes scholarly articles on literary subjects (recently on Fitzgerald, Lawrence, Camus, and Nietzsche), stories, and poetry, as well as essays, several of which have graced The Midwest Quarterly.

Literary critics too frequently mistake the leaves for the forest, and by failing to explore …
