Use Of Accounting Information In Governmental Regulation And Public Administration: The Impact Of John R. Commons And Early Institutional Economists, Mark A. Covaleski, Mark William Dirsmith, Sajay Samuel
Accounting Historians Journal
This paper examines the socio-political process by which an ensemble of such calculative practices and techniques as accounting came to be developed, adopted, and justified within turn-of-the-cen-tury public administration. We are particularly concerned with examining the influence of John R. Commons and other early institutional economists during this Progressive era. Using primary and secondary archival materials, our purpose is to make three main contributions to the literature. First, the paper explores Commons' contribution to the debates over "value" which seems to be somewhat unique in that he explicitly recognized that there exists no unproblematic, intrinsic measure of value, but rather …

Irving Fisher And The Mechanistic Character Of Twentieth Century Accounting Thought, Tom Mouck
Irving Fisher And The Mechanistic Character Of Twentieth Century Accounting Thought, Tom Mouck
Accounting Historians Journal
This paper provides an overview of the influence of Newtonian mechanics on the development of neoclassical economic theory and highlights Fisher's role in the popularization of the resulting mechanical conception of economics. The paper also portrays Fisher's The Nature of Capital and Income : a work which has been aptly characterized as the "first economic theory of accounting" : as the first move toward the colonization of accounting by economics. The result of Fisher's influence has been a paradigmatic linkage between the Newtonian world view of science, neoclassical economics, and mainstream academic accounting thought. The picture that emerges from this …
Edward Wild: Advocate Of Simplification And An Organised Profession In Colonial Australia, Garry D. Carnegie, Scott Varker
Edward Wild: Advocate Of Simplification And An Organised Profession In Colonial Australia, Garry D. Carnegie, Scott Varker
Accounting Historians Journal
As far as can be established, Edward Wild's book, Bookkeeping by Double Entry Made Easy, was the second book on accounting to be published in Australia. Apart from the presentation of his simplified system of double entry bookkeeping, Wild advocated the establishment of an organised Australian accounting profession in his book. This paper examines the life and career of Wild and describes and analyses the content of his book. The book is placed within the local Victorian context. Possible influences on Wild's writing are examined and the possible influence of Wild on later developments in Australian accounting is addressed.

Historical Context Of Profesional Ideology And Tension And Strain In The Accounting Profession, Sivakumar Velayutham, M. H. Perera
Historical Context Of Profesional Ideology And Tension And Strain In The Accounting Profession, Sivakumar Velayutham, M. H. Perera
Accounting Historians Journal
A growing literature points to a crisis of confidence in the accounting profession and a lack of commitment by its members to the professional ideology. In this paper the approach developed by MacIntyre is used to place professional ideology in an historical context. The paper argues that the tension and strain in the profession can be related to the changing character of both the contemporary society and professional ideology itself. It concludes by highlighting the need for the profession to develop an ideology to which its members as well as society can relate.
Top Management Perception Of Strategic Information Processing In A Turbulent Environment, Pien Wang, Peng S. Chan
Top Management Perception Of Strategic Information Processing In A Turbulent Environment, Pien Wang, Peng S. Chan
Journal of International Information Management
Extant strategic management literature provides only partial answer to the important question: What variables affect top managers' ability to process complicated, novel, ambiguous, or dynamic strategic information in a turbulent environment? Drawn upon cognitive psychology, personality theory, management theory, organizational theory, and management information systems literatures, this paper proposes that nine personal attributes and four contextual attributes affect top managers' information processing capability. The nine personal attributes are: cognitive complexity, knowledge, mental model of success, open-mindedness, time orientation, personal values, tolerance for ambiguity, locus of control, and time devoted to environmental scanning. The four contextual attributes are: rewards and incentives, …

Performance Appraisal In Organizational Cultural Context, Unoda C. Moyo
Dissertations and Theses
This study examined the relationship between an organization's culture and its performance appraisal (PA) system and process. The initial phase of this study involved examining an organization's culture and the properties of its performance appraisal system from organizational archival information. Information derived from this phase of the study was later utilized to formulate interview questions, guide the search for the organizational culture survey instrument, and to construct the performance appraisal perceptions measuring instrument. This latter instrument is a quantitative measure that was later employed in testing the primary hypothesis that stated the performance appraisal process had a positive effect on …

The Conservative And Liberal Debate Over The Success Or Failure Of Welfare Programs In The United States, John L. Rhoads
The Conservative And Liberal Debate Over The Success Or Failure Of Welfare Programs In The United States, John L. Rhoads
Theses
This thesis will focus on the debate between liberal and conservative authors concerning the success or failure of the welfare state in the United States of America .
During the 1960's, government involvement expanded greatly through President Lyndon Johnson's great society programs . These programs were designed to alleviate poverty and promote self reliance amongst the poorest segments in society. Overall these programs were accepted by both the general populus and those in government as the morally "right" thing to do.
As time went by, and expenditures and involvement increased, debate surfaced as to how well these programs were doing …
Towards An Understanding Of Chinese Business Networks In Asia-Pacific: The Singapore Case, Thomas Menkhoff, Chalmers Labig
Towards An Understanding Of Chinese Business Networks In Asia-Pacific: The Singapore Case, Thomas Menkhoff, Chalmers Labig
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The embeddedness of entrepreneurs in local, regional or global business networks based on kinship, clanship, territorial or ethnic ties and solidarities has often been cited as characteristic of the Chinese business community in Southeast Asia. Qualitative interviews with Singaporean Chinese merchant-exporters were conducted in order to examine this thesis and shed light on the various "guanxi bases" of their international trading networks. The findings suggest that there is a strong tendency among these Singaporean entrepreneurs towards external commercial transactions with "outsiders" and "friends" rather than with "kin" whether by blood, marriage, or ascription. Kinship reciprocity may curb the autonomy and …
