The Impact Of The Louisiana Lottery On Salaries In Education, Melissa Vicknair Melancon Jul 1997

The Impact Of The Louisiana Lottery On Salaries In Education, Melissa Vicknair Melancon

Doctoral Dissertations

The study was undertaken to decide whether lottery revenues impacted teachers' salaries in Louisiana. Economic recession brought on by the collapse of the oil and gas industry, disgruntled taxpayers, and the lure of easy money prompted Louisiana legislators to pass a bill adopting a state lottery. Initially, all funds were earmarked for education. Subsequently, lottery revenues were deposited into the general fund. Yet many thought the lottery would be a significant source of money for education and teachers' salaries.

Logged annual salaries were used in models for university teachers and for elementary and secondary school teachers. Variables were incorporated to …

A Study Of Employment System Of Japanese Multinational Retailers In Hong Kong, Mei Ling, May Wong

One hundred percent of the questionnaires were returned. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Making Sense Of The Asian Success Story: An Integrative Framework, Chow Hou Wee, Gilbert Tan Mar 1997

Making Sense Of The Asian Success Story: An Integrative Framework, Chow Hou Wee, Gilbert Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The article focuses on Asian countries that have experienced economic growth over the past 50 years including Hong Kong, China; Japan; Singapore; South Korea and Taiwan. With the exception of Hong Kong, the economic success of the Asian countries has been attributed to the interventionist framework. Export-orientation is one strategy that is most associated with the success of the five Asian countries. The export-oriented strategy helped the five Asian countries in many ways. The ensuring growth of employment enabled the country to save and accumulate capital for reinvestment. The export-oriented strategy also positively affects the competitive advantages of the country. …

The link between organizational configurations and performance has become a central and somewhat controversial focus of research in the strategic management literature, We statistically aggregated results from 40 original tests of the configurations-performance relationship. In contrast to previous qualitative reviews, this meta-analysis demonstrated that an organization's performance is partially explained by its configuration. Tests of four potential moderators showed that organizations' configurations contributed more to performance explanation to the extent that studies used (1) broad definitions of configurations, (2) single-industry samples, and (3) longitudinal designs, Results highlight the need for programmatic research.

Maturity Model Linkages Between Software Development Teams, Users And Quality, Eugene G. Mcguire Jan 1997

Maturity Model Linkages Between Software Development Teams, Users And Quality, Eugene G. Mcguire

Journal of International Information Management

Information Systems literature has shown clear linkages between the selection of software development methodologies, the actions of software development teams, overall product quality, and user satisfaction. Rarely are these linkages emphasized, however, in current research on process improvement. This paper examines the convergence of these areas and discusses current research designed to further explore these linkages within the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) framework.

Influence Of Scottish Accountants In The United States: The Early Case Of The Society Of Accountants In Edinburgh, T. A. Lee

Accounting Historians Journal

This study represents part of a long-term research program to investigate the influence of U.K. accountants on the development of professional accountancy in other parts of the world. It examines the impact of a small group of Scottish chartered accountants who emigrated to the U.S. in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Set against a general theory of emigration, the study's main results reveal the significant involvement of this group in the founding and development of U.S. accountancy. The influence is predominantly with respect to public accountancy and its main institutional organizations. Several of the individuals achieved considerable eminence in …

Informing Historical Research In Accounting And Management: Traditions, Philosophies, And Opportunities, Lee D. Parker Jan 1997

Informing Historical Research In Accounting And Management: Traditions, Philosophies, And Opportunities, Lee D. Parker

Accounting Historians Journal

Historical research in accounting and management, hitherto largely neglected as a field of inquiry by many management and accounting researchers, has experienced a resurgence of interest and activity in research conferences and journals over the past decade. The potential lessons of the past for contemporary issues have been rediscovered, but the way forward is littered with antiquarian narratives, methodologically naive analyses, ideologically driven interpretation and ignorance of the traditions, schools and philosophy of the craft by accounting and management researchers as well as traditional and critical historians themselves. This paper offers an introduction to contributions made to the philosophies and …

Evolution Of Professional Enforcement In Texas : An Examination Of Violations And Sanctions, Mary E. Harston, Sandra T. Welch Jan 1997

Evolution Of Professional Enforcement In Texas : An Examination Of Violations And Sanctions, Mary E. Harston, Sandra T. Welch

Accounting Historians Journal

The purpose of this paper is to examine the enforcement of the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct (Rules) from 1946 to 1978. This period encompasses the early regulation of the Texas accounting profession after the passage of the Texas Public Accountancy Act (Act) in 1945. The Act and accompanying Rules remained in effect until 1979, when the Texas legislature enacted new accountancy legislation which inaugurated a more regulatory era. Results indicate that enforcement of the Rules of Conduct was a process evolving over time as both the state and professional political systems impacted the behavior of the Texas State Board …

“We Have Raffeled For The Elephant & Won!”: The Wool Industry At South Union, Kentucky, Donna C. Parker, Jonathan J. Jeffrey Jan 1997

“We Have Raffeled For The Elephant & Won!”: The Wool Industry At South Union, Kentucky, Donna C. Parker, Jonathan J. Jeffrey

SCL Faculty and Staff Publications

Wool, next to cotton, is perhaps the most important of all textile fibers. Like most of their contemporaries, the Shakers of South Union, Kentucky, recognized the ease with which wool fibers were spun into yarn and the advantages of sturdy wool clothing. South Union’s textile industry grew from a simple carding mill to a full-fledged woolen factory with a 240-spindle spinning jack and 4 power looms. From its genesis in 1815 to its abrupt demised in 1868, the sect’s woolen industry provides a paradigm for the study of the United States’ textile industrialization.

Managed Care: The Questionable Triumph Of Financial Management, Roger A. Lohmann Jan 1997

Managed Care: The Questionable Triumph Of Financial Management, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Managed Care is a generic term for a broad and constantly changing mix of health insurance, assistance and payment programs which seek to retain quality and access while controlling the cost of physical and mental health services. The introduction of managed care fundamentally transforms the traditional “agency” relationships on which modern social work was built. Little research on its impact on social services is currently available. The managed care model, with its distinctive external patterns of accountability, raises serious questions about the continuing viability of the “social agency” model of practice to which social work has been committed for most …
