Theory And Research In Strategic Management: Swings Of A Pendulum, Robert E. Hoskisson, William P. Wan, Daphne W. Yiu, William A. Hitt
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The development of the field of strategic management within the last two decades has been dramatic. While its roots have been in a more applied area, often referred to as business policy, the current field of strategic management is strongly theory based, with substantial empirical research, and is eclectic in nature. This review of the development of the field and its current position examines the field’s early development and the primary theoretical and methodological bases through its history. Early developments include Chandler’s (1962) Strategy and Structure and Ansoff’s (1965) Corporate Strategy. These early works took on a contingency perspective (fit …

Strategic Flexibility In Information Technology Alliances: The Influence Of Transaction Cost Economics And Social Exchange Theory, Candace Ybarra, Margarethe Wiersema
Strategic Flexibility In Information Technology Alliances: The Influence Of Transaction Cost Economics And Social Exchange Theory, Candace Ybarra, Margarethe Wiersema
Business Faculty Articles and Research
Utilizing a model drawn from both transaction cost economics and social exchange theory, we analyze determinants of strategic flexibility in a sample of strategic alliances involved in joint development agreements or joint research pacts. Findings indicate that, in general, determinants suggested by transaction cost economics provided flexibility in modification and inflexibility in exit. From social exchange theory, trust was found to be positively related to both types of flexibility while another component of social exchange theory, dependence, was found to be negatively related to the strategic flexibility of the alliance. Results also found that factors suggested by both transaction cost …
Technology Features As Triggers For Sensemaking, Terri L. Griffith
Technology Features As Triggers For Sensemaking, Terri L. Griffith
Management & Entrepreneurship
Technology implementation is complex and often unpredictable. Although previous research describes mechanisms related to the social construction of technology and technology use in organizations, researchers have focused little on the inputs to these models. In this article I attempt to fill this void by examining triggers for initial user sensemaking. The prediction of sensemaking should enhance the application of theories, such as adaptive structuration, and inform the management of technology through greater anticipation of user understanding.
Trust And Ethics In International Business Negotiations: A Cross-Cultural Analysis, Mohammad Niamat Elahee
Trust And Ethics In International Business Negotiations: A Cross-Cultural Analysis, Mohammad Niamat Elahee
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The growing interdependence in the global economic and political arena is resulting in accelerated growth in cross-national commercial relationships. Since some form of negotiation precedes most commercial activities and relationships, the topic of cross-cultural negotiation is of crucial importance to academicians, practitioners, and policy formulators. Despite its importance, research on cross-cultural business negotiation has not been very systematic and most of the empirical studies lack the explanatory power that is necessary for theory building. This study attempts to overcome this shortcoming by systematically linking different dimensions of national culture with different types of negotiation behavior.
This dissertation studies the relationship …

A Simultaneous Model For Innovative Product Category Sales Diffusion And Competitive Dynamics, Namwoon Kim, Ellen Bridges, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava
A Simultaneous Model For Innovative Product Category Sales Diffusion And Competitive Dynamics, Namwoon Kim, Ellen Bridges, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Diffusion of innovation has been the focus of an entire stream of research in marketing, and firm entry and exit decisions have been investigated by marketers, strategists, and economists. However, little attention has been paid to the relationship between changing demand and the entry and exit behaviors of competitors in the marketplace. Understanding this relationship is essential in making resource commitments, as profitability of options depends not only on the size and growth of the market, but also on the number of competitors likely to be encountered. This is particularly important in innovative markets, where changes occur rapidly and one …
Running On The Spot? A Review Of Twenty Years Of Research On The Management Of Human Resources In Comparative And International Perspective, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Howard Gospel, John Montgomery
Running On The Spot? A Review Of Twenty Years Of Research On The Management Of Human Resources In Comparative And International Perspective, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Howard Gospel, John Montgomery
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Research using a comparative and international perspective on the management of human resources is examined, drawing on articles published in leading human resource management, management/ organizational behaviour and related social science journals between 1977 and 1997. In total a little under 2 per cent of the articles under review focused on the management of human resources in a comparative and international perspective. The largest group of these articles was comparative in nature (44 per cent), followed by those with an international perspective (35 per cent). A smaller number adopted a combined approach (17 per cent) and a few were separately …

Habitus Wars And Field(S) Of Dreams: Using Bourdieu To Reframe The Sense Of A Crisis, Louann Hofheins Cummings
Habitus Wars And Field(S) Of Dreams: Using Bourdieu To Reframe The Sense Of A Crisis, Louann Hofheins Cummings
Student Scholarship
The paper illustrates the application of Pierre Bourdieu's oeuvre to a qualitative research project regarding organizational change. Considerable attention is given to the interaction of field delineation, capital stakes struggle, interests, and individual/class habitus at both a church and a medical college. It is posited that a focus on field analysis considers the sources of capital struggle in a given realm. This, in turn, grants a researcher a new way to analyze who participates in these struggles, what prized capital stimulates interest, and how action and prctices are subsequently engendered. This body of work suggests that agents and/or classes have …
Managers In The Middle: A Study Of Long Term Care Regional Managers Dealing With Organizational Stress, Jeffrey W. Ferguson
Managers In The Middle: A Study Of Long Term Care Regional Managers Dealing With Organizational Stress, Jeffrey W. Ferguson
Student Scholarship
Perhaps the most difficult job in long term care chain organizations is that of the Regional Manager. This study considers the chronic and acute events with which Regional Managers must contend and determines how they cope with the stresses of those events. Appraisal theories of Richard Lazarus and P-E fit are used to test the actions of the Regional Managers. The events discussed seem to confirm previous research regarding coping in that the more significant the event, the greater the likelihood that others will be solicited to attain a solution. Corporate staffs who assist in the acute events help to …
