This is Old Dominion University's second annual "State of the Region" Report. While it represents the work of many individuals connected in various ways to the university, the Report does not constitute an "official" viewpoint of the University, or it's president, Dr. Roseann Runte.

This year's Report was produced with the goal of making Hampton Roads an even better place to live. Those who know and love the region of Hampton Roads frequently boast of its numerous strengths and successes, but we do so with the understanding that it would be possible for us to improve the region's performance in …

Seven Aspects Of Loan Size, Mark Schreiner Sep 2001

Seven Aspects Of Loan Size, Mark Schreiner

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Attempts to measure the depth of outreach in microfinance usually start--and often end--with loan size. But just what is loan size? This paper discusses seven aspects of loan size, each of which affects not only depth of outreach but also profitability. The seven aspects are: term to maturity, dollars disbursed, average balance, dollars per installment, time between installments, number of installments, and "dollar-years of borrowed resources." This paper defines the seven aspects, explains why each one matters, and gives examples of their measurement with data from three Latin American microfinance organizations.

The Effects Of Alliance Portfolio Characteristics And Absorptive Capacity On Performance: A Study Of Biotechnology Firms, Gerard George, Shaker A. Zahra, Kathleen K. Wheatley, Raihan Khan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In many high technology industries, strategic alliances have become important for improving a firm's financial performance by providing knowledge that can be used to develop the capabilities needed to introduce new products. Therefore, researchers have examined those characteristics of alliances that can contribute to the performance of high technology companies. There is agreement that the structure and knowledge flows within alliances can affect a firm's innovativeness. However, to date, researchers have studied alliances as individual events or transactions, failing to recognize their synergistic effects as a coherent portfolio. Viewing alliances as a portfolio of strategic agreements, we suggest that portfolio …

Housing Policy, Wealth Formation And The Singapore Economy, Sock-Yong Phang Jul 2001

Housing Policy, Wealth Formation And The Singapore Economy, Sock-Yong Phang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper evaluates the contribution of housing policy in Singapore to financial sector development, housing wealth formation and macro-economic performance, both retrospectively and prospectively. It provides an overview of past housing policies and traces the linkages to the financial sector. Housing policy as effected through the Housing and Development Board and the Central Provident Fund (CPF) hampered the development of the commercial housing loans sector and domestic financial markets, but contributed to the overall growth and stability of the housing loans market and associated financial institutions. Housing policy and the trend of housing asset inflation contributed significantly to the formation …

Equilibrium Spells Death : Applying Chaos Theory To Organisations, Saurav Mukherji Jun 2001

Equilibrium Spells Death : Applying Chaos Theory To Organisations, Saurav Mukherji

IIMB Management Review

Organisations have long been viewed as open systems consisting of inter-connected components having multiple levels of interdependencies that work together by exchanging resources within themselves and with the environment. Treating organisations as complex systems, organisational designers tried to match the structural complexity of organisations with a complex
environment and technology. However, in the light of some important discoveries in other fields regarding the nature of complex systems, it may be worthwhile to re-examine some of the basic assumptions made.

The Moderating Effect Of Social Identity On The Relationship Between Service Feature Importance, Customer Satisfaction, And Customer Retention In A Paid Membership Organization, Matthew Nice

Dissertations and Theses

Based in Social Identity Theory (i.e., the personal identification with a particular group), the present research seeks to broaden current literature by investigating a theorized moderating effect of members' social identity on the relationship between customer satisfaction and customer retention in a paid membership organization. Five hundred nineteen members of a non-profit, predominantly Jewish, community center were surveyed on their perception of service-feature importance, customer satisfaction, and intentions to remain. Results indicated that social identity significantly moderated the relationship between service-feature importance and customer satisfaction. Results of social identity moderating the relationship between customer satisfaction and members' intentions to renew …

How Does The Retail Clerk Make Sense Of His Environment, Tyler L. Watson May 2001

How Does The Retail Clerk Make Sense Of His Environment, Tyler L. Watson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The retail clerk is a common feature of today's society. However, the role of the retail clerk has been largely overlooked from the sociological perspective. More precisely from the ethnomethodological perspective. Currently most of the body of research on the retail clerk is from the business perspective and sheds little light on what it is like to be a retail clerk. This study was designed to gain access to the other side of the retail scene, that is, the side of the retail clerk. Most Americans are already familiar with the store but do not know how things are experienced …

Advertising Appeal And The New Woman, Santosh Dhar, Prashant Mishra, Upinder Dhar Mar 2001

Advertising Appeal And The New Woman, Santosh Dhar, Prashant Mishra, Upinder Dhar

IIMB Management Review

The study of the act reinforces the view clearly reinforces the view that while targetting customers, their psycho-social status as reflected by their employment and marital status, cannot be ignored. Women in today's market cannot be considered as a homogeneous group. Their diversity in terms of psycho-social status must be accepted and taken into consideration while making any segmentation and target decision. The present and previous researches suggest that increasing resources of women and an emerging social shift towards egalitarianism are producing more joint and independent decision-making in product service categories of high perceived risk. The increased importance of feminine …

United States Air Force Graduate Degrees From 1990 To 2000: A Comparison, Jonathan G. Downing

Theses and Dissertations

Throughout its history, the United States Air Force has been concerned with technical graduate education. In 1947, the Ridenour Report stated the importance and need of Air Force officers with technical graduate degrees. This emphasis has served the Air Force well, but there is concern among senior Air Force leaders that there has been an erosion of these technical skills and graduate education. This research will examine the issues surrounding technical graduate education in the Air Force and will address the possible loss of such technical education. The results of this research provide specific statistical data and analysis on the …

The guidance is translated into 18 research questions based on its main tenets. Each duty occurrence is categorized by type …
