Financial Management: Social Agency, Social Enterprise And Social Economy, Roger A. Lohmann, Nancy Lohmann
Financial Management: Social Agency, Social Enterprise And Social Economy, Roger A. Lohmann, Nancy Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
There has been a quiet revolution in financial management practice in social agencies in recent decades, symbolized by the transition from fund to enterprise accounting and increasing recognition of the ‘third sector’ of the social economy. The traditional voluntary agency model of donations has been joined by grants, performance contracts, ‘managed care’ and an array of other options, and traditional voluntary agency based and public agency practice now exist alongside corporate for profit service delivery and various forms of private practice. Social enterprise and entrepreneurship are a common theme in all this diversity, as social agencies must aggressively seek out …

Celebrating Paradoxes In Christian Leadership, Michael E. Cafferky
Celebrating Paradoxes In Christian Leadership, Michael E. Cafferky
Faculty Works
Studying organizations as dynamic, open systems has captured the interest of organizational scholars for several decades. Along with other influences this has led to pr9gressively more sophisticated understanding of how leaders and followers interact and how their organizations interact with the external environment. In turn, as our understanding has improved, scholarly awareness of the complexity of leadership has increased. One might argue that this awareness correspondingly has produced a better understanding of the many tensions that derive from dilemmas and paradoxes that leaders face in their work.

Shared Leadership Theory, Craig L. Pearce, Jay A. Conger, Edwin A. Locke
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Edwin Locke contributed a chapter to the critique section of Craig Pearce and Jay Conger’s (2003a) edited book, Shared Leadership: Reframing the Hows and Whys of Leadership, published by Sage. In this letter exchange, they continue their dialogue on this important topic. They focus in particular on clarifying what each means by “shared leadership” and on what shared leadership can and should look like at the top of organizations.
Measuring Human Capital In High-Tech Defense Companies, Alexander Eksir
Measuring Human Capital In High-Tech Defense Companies, Alexander Eksir
Student Scholarship
Within the hightech defense industry, product reliability results are delivered through the integration of technology solutions and process innovation. This is entirely a result of the ways that people in defense corporations and government agencies develop and use their talent. However, due to the increased average age of defense industry employees and the bimodal distribution characteristics of most technical companies, sustainability of performance is currently at risk. A robust and meaningful way to measure human capital and its contribution to the corporation's net worth is essential to enabling analysis, discussion and appropriate investment. Unfortunately, literature dedicated to human resource accounting …
Where Was The Board? A "Moves"-Based Approach To Improving Npo Accountability, Frederick O. Udochi
Where Was The Board? A "Moves"-Based Approach To Improving Npo Accountability, Frederick O. Udochi
Student Scholarship
Strong arguments have been made that traditional definitions of accountability – financial health, internal controls and regulatory compliance – do not fully capture an organization’s performance (Ospina et al, 2002; Behn, 2001; Kearns, 1996). Failures evidenced by multiple breakdowns of accountability in nonprofit organizations have resulted in calls for boards to pursue a broadened level of accountability. There is little or no corresponding guidance in the literature to show how that could be accomplished. This research paper proposes to explore the “how” by adopting the notion of “moves” (Pentland, 1992), which are the verbal and/or nonverbal actions, routines or accomplishments …

Passport To Trade: Connecting Europe’S Smes From East To West?, Amanda Ratcliffe, Thomas Cooney
Passport To Trade: Connecting Europe’S Smes From East To West?, Amanda Ratcliffe, Thomas Cooney
Conference proceedings
: An EFER report in 1995observed that little of the growth of Europe’s top 500 companies came from existing products in existing markets, but almost two-thirds of the growth came from entering new markets [1]. A large majority of Europe’s 500 are active in export markets, with exports accounting for 40% of their turnover as opposed to the 10% export share for SMEs overall. One of the critical reasons for the poor performance of SMEs within the international arena is their ignorance of local business cultures. This paper is based upon the work of an EU initiative with the project …

Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between family religiosity, family leisure, and family functioning. The sample consisted of 121 parents and 99 youth from various religious groups. Results indicated a positive relationship between family religiosity and family leisure. Both family religiosity and family leisure had a significant relationship with family functioning in this sample. Data collected from both parents and youth provided insight into the influence of family religiosity and family leisure on family functioning. Family religiosity was the strongest predictor of family functioning for parents. For youth, both family leisure and family religiosity were significant …

Continuing Professional Education And Its Impact On The Practices And Careers Of Certified Public Accountants, Jean Annette Meyer
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This research effort was intended to determine the perceived value that continuing professional education has on the careers or practices of certified public accountants licensed in Louisiana. A researcher designed survey incorporated both Likkert type scale responses and open ended questions. The survey was electronically administered to the membership of the Louisiana Society of Certified Public Accountants. The survey focused on the perceived value of and attitudes toward continuing professional education, as well as the desirability of specific methods of delivery. The results of the survey indicated that certified public accountants believe continuing professional education has value. The results also …
Organizational Trauma: A Phenomenological Study Of Leaders In Traumatized Organizations, Shana D. Lynn Hormann
Organizational Trauma: A Phenomenological Study Of Leaders In Traumatized Organizations, Shana D. Lynn Hormann
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
While some organizations die when trauma erupts, others do not succumb. They live and even thrive. The purpose of this study was two-fold: 1. To learn from leaders their perspectives about key conditions that allow organizations to withstand and heal from organizational trauma; and, 2. To inform practice about building and strengthening these conditions in organizations. Participants were leaders who led their organizations during an organizational trauma or who came into programs after the trauma occurred to facilitate recovery. Nine executive directors for sexual assault programs participated in this hermeneutic phenomenological study, sharing their experiences and reflections. Two composite depictions …

Creativity Needed In Non-Profits?, Wee Liang Tan
Creativity Needed In Non-Profits?, Wee Liang Tan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Creativity is something that one might not associate with the social service sector. In fact, one might consider creativity something quite distant from the non-profit sector. "We in the social service sector have more important things to do - we serve our clients and beneficiaries; we don't have the time to fool around with fancy new ideas or projects." Yet such sentiments could be no further from the truth.
