Mentors & Managers, Michael Mcgill
Mentors & Managers, Michael Mcgill
Historical Working Papers
Participants in a managerial banking seminar who had 7 years or less experience were sampled with questionnaires to assess their experience with mentoring. Results indicate that roughly 80 percent of participants experienced mentoring. More research into the process and outcomes of mentoring is suggested.

Person-Situation Interaction: An Exploration, William F. Joyce, John W. Slocum Jr., Mary Ann Von Glinow
Historical Working Papers
Data from foremen working in 3 plants owned by one manufacturing firm were surveyed to assess work climate, job satisfaction, achievement and motivating potential. Results were used to build a taxonomy for classifying patterns of fit between persons and situations. Three congruency models are used to interpret the data and interpretation seems to support the need to weigh environmental variables fully in examining performance.

A Social Learning Approach To Organizational Behavior, Tim R.V. Davis, Fred Luthans
A Social Learning Approach To Organizational Behavior, Tim R.V. Davis, Fred Luthans
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
After first reviewing the existing theoretical frameworks for human behavior, we present a social learning theory approach that incorporates the interactive nature of all the variables of organizational behavior - the behavior itself, the environment, and the person (internal cognitions). We differentiate social learning theory from operant theory, highlighting the processes of modeling, cognitions, and self-control. We suggest self- management techniques as a way to apply the social learning framework in order to enhance managerial effectiveness.

An Investigation Of The Gerontological Educational Background And The Need For Training Of Practitioners In East Central Illinois, Kathryn L. Carey
An Investigation Of The Gerontological Educational Background And The Need For Training Of Practitioners In East Central Illinois, Kathryn L. Carey
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was two-fold. The first was to investigate the gerontological educational background of persons presently working in the field of aging. The second purpose was to determine if there was a need for and interest in further training, and if so what particular topics the respondents would find most critical to their interests or beneficial to their work. The subjects were fifty-four persons involved in serving the over sixty-five population in a ten county area within the East Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging, Area Five.
A three page questionnaire was used as the investigative instrument …

The Traditional Sex-Stereotype Of A Job As A Moderator Variable For The Directionality Of Sex Biases In Performance Evaluation, Bernard Bena
The Traditional Sex-Stereotype Of A Job As A Moderator Variable For The Directionality Of Sex Biases In Performance Evaluation, Bernard Bena
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Accurate and objective performance appraisals are absolutely necessary due to their utility in important personnel decisions such as promotion, demotion and training. This study examines the contaminating effects of sex bias on performance evaluations and it's relationship to the sex-stereotype of the job and levels of performance. Unlike previous studies, this study not only examines these effects at the extremes of performance, but at average levels as well. Also, unlike previous studies, the subjects empirically determined the sex-typed nature of the jobs and the levels of performance within those jobs rather than the experimenter having made a priori decisions. Hypothetical …

Perception Of Public Confidence In Financial Reporting: A Half Century Down The Drain?, S. Paul Garner
Perception Of Public Confidence In Financial Reporting: A Half Century Down The Drain?, S. Paul Garner
Accounting Historians Notebook
In view of the fact that financial and business reporters for general readers can still make the headlines, as indicated in the three examples above, in 1979, it is a bit of curiosity that a prominent writer of a half century ago can also be quoted along substantially the same lines, even though it is natural that the phaseology may be a bit different. Therefore, after going through the 350 pages carefully, and noting all of the comments and conclusions on public confidence in accounting and financial reporting in the early days of the great depression, one may be permitted …

The Operational Effectiveness Of The Behavioral Expectations Scale & The Mixed Standard Scale: A Comparative Evaluation, Deborah Boniske
The Operational Effectiveness Of The Behavioral Expectations Scale & The Mixed Standard Scale: A Comparative Evaluation, Deborah Boniske
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Performance evaluations were obtained on firefighters in a large Midwestern City. The evaluations were conducted through utilization of two different scale types (The Behavioral Expectation Scale and The Mixed Standard Scale). These evaluations were obtained in order to test the hypotheses that the MSS was psychometrically superior to the BES in the reduction of halo and leniency error and that the MSS was also the better scale type in terms of producing higher interrater reliability. Leniency error (in both the absolute and comparative sense) was examined by conducting a series of T-tests. Halo error was investigated by a comparison of …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
in this issue. . .
TWENTY YEARS AGO, Dudley T. Cornish launched The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought. Since that time, we have published nearly five hundred articles on art, biology, drama, economics, fiction, government, history, law, pedagogy, philosophy, poetry, politics, psychology, rhetoric, sociology, and even thermodynamics. Since 1960, MQ also has published poetry, at which a later issue will glance back. To the editors, "contemporary thought" never has meant primarily "thought on contemporary events," and our contributors have been concerned not only with the contemporary world but also with classicial antiquity and the Middle Ages; nevertheless, it …

A Masters Program In Management Psychology For Industry: A Study, Donald J. Tabone
A Masters Program In Management Psychology For Industry: A Study, Donald J. Tabone
Theses
This study explores the design and justification of a graduate program in Management Psychology tailored to meet the evolving needs of industry. Donald J. Tabone investigates the limitations of traditional Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs, noting their heavy emphasis on technical subjects such as accounting, finance, and marketing, with minimal focus on human resource development and psychological principles vital to effective management. The paper argues that as organizations become increasingly complex, there is a growing need for leaders skilled in interpersonal dynamics, motivation, behavior analysis, and humanistic management approaches.
The study begins with a comparative analysis of MBA curricula …

Applications Of Multi-Attribute Utility Theory In The Health Care Delivery System Since 1970, Durjoy Kumar Chaudhuri, Arnold Reisman
Research Reports from the Department of Operations
The Multi-Attribute Utility Theory is a special branch of a more generalized body of theories collectively known as "Decision Theory". Peter Fishburn described it as the "personalistic prescriptive theory of choice for individual decisions". It is personalistic because the decision maker is an indispensable component in almost every phase of research since his personal values and judgements are intimately involved in a decision-making activity. It should be stressed that the multi-attribute utility theory was never meant to be the panacea of any or all decision problems. It helps the decision maker to choose a strategy (or a course of action) …
