Refining The Displacement Of Culture And The Use Of Scenes And Themes In Organizational Studies, Nancy C. Morey, Fred Luthans

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The move to displace the concept of culture traditionally used in anthropology to organizational research is discussed. Issues surrounding the culture concept and the juxtaposition of culture and organization are given special attention. Current thinking about the nature of the process of displacement is refined. Examples from an ongoing study of a city transit organization are used to demonstrate the use of cultural scenes and themes in organizational research.

Organization Structure And Financial Market Performance: A Preliminary Test, Richard A. Bettis, Andrew Chen

Historical Working Papers

Firms in the petroleum industry adopting a multidivisional structure arestudied to observe the impact of structural change on financial performance. The outcome did not clearly show divisional structure to be a determining factor in performance. There is some suggestion that this may have a great deal to do with the vertical integration inherent in the petroleum industry.

Rationalism, Capitalism, And Democracy: The Views Of Schumpeter And Knight, J. Patrick Raines, Clarence R. Jung Jr. Jan 1985

Rationalism, Capitalism, And Democracy: The Views Of Schumpeter And Knight, J. Patrick Raines, Clarence R. Jung Jr.

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

The concept of rationality is both the origination point and the Achilles’ heel of the study of economic theory. Two of America’s more important economists, J. A. Schumpeter and Frank H. Knight, held highly developed views of the rationalistic civilization and rational thought. Although considerable concordance is present in their visions of rationality, conceptual differences exist.

Rational behavior is, in many respects, like beauty in that its meaning is defined by the extent to which there is a mapping with the values of the observer. Any discussion of rationality must begin with this difficult problem of relativity in values.

Work Groups As An Aid To Management, John W. Porter Jan 1985

Work Groups As An Aid To Management, John W. Porter

Theses

The work group is an important part of every organization. These groups are important in that they have a definite impact on both the organization and the employees. Every employee is a member of a work group. The employee that is a part of a supervisory unit or an employee in a department is a member of the formal work group. Those employees that share their time on the job with those individuals that they care to be with for reasons other than the organization's design, are members of the informal work group, or clique as it is sometimes called. …

Contrasts In Management And Productivity Between The Japanese And American Systems; (What Can And What Is Being Done), Jim Venables

Theses

This paper, "Contrasts in Management and Productivity Between the Japanese and American Systems; (What Can and What Is Being Done)" by Jim Venables, provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of Japanese and American management styles, highlighting their impact on productivity, corporate culture, and organizational effectiveness. Beginning with Japan’s post-World War II industrial ascent, the study attributes much of the nation's economic success to superior managerial practices rather than external factors such as labor costs or resources. The paper juxtaposes two corporate giants—Matsushita Electric (Panasonic) and International Telephone & Telegraph (ITT)—as representative models of their respective systems.

The Japanese model, exemplified by …

Research Notes Organizational Commitment: A Comparison Of American, Japanese, And Korean Employees, Fred Luthans, Harriette S. Mccaul, Nancy G. Dodd Jan 1985

Research Notes Organizational Commitment: A Comparison Of American, Japanese, And Korean Employees, Fred Luthans, Harriette S. Mccaul, Nancy G. Dodd

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Considerable attention is currently being given to exploring differences between Japanese and American workers that might explain the widening gap between the productivity growth rates of the two countries. Some researchers have suggested that this difference in productivity growth is, at least in part, due to Japanese workers' having a higher level of commitment to their orgnaizations than American works (Cole, 1979; Hatvany & Pucik, 1981; Marsh & Mannari, 1977; Whitehall & Takezawa, 1968). Turnover rates are commonly cited to support the popular notion that Japanese employees, whose turnover rate is about half that of their American counterparts, are more …
