A Justification For Implementing A Monetary Incentive Plan For All Salaried Employees, Peter N. Pastore Jr. Mar 1986

A Justification For Implementing A Monetary Incentive Plan For All Salaried Employees, Peter N. Pastore Jr.

Master's Theses

The current organizational status of the hunan resource has undergone significant changes. Recent technological advances and increased global competition are causing a shift from labor intensive to capital intensive production in the industrialized nations, with an accompanying emphasis on product quality. Concomitantly, (1) the quality of the machinery depends on the hunan variable in the producing company; and (2) while machines can be sped up to increase the quantity produced, the calibration of that equipment, for example, is left up to the human factor. Since these technological advances are projected to continue, more and more emphasis will be placed on …

Private Human Services In Welfare Society, Roger A. Lohmann Feb 1986

Private Human Services In Welfare Society, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper is an effort to propose a moderately optimistic future for the personal care sector of human services. It is proposed that the best available future scenario for personal care services between now and the year 2019 is to concentrate on privatization of service delivery on a small-scale basis. Government, in this model should be limited largely to three roles: 1) source of venture capital; 2) regulation of service delivery; and 3) income maintenance for the poorest populations. In this future, the main burden of personal care services will be carried by the private sector. Dramatic improvements in the …

A Behavioral Model Of The Medical Offset Effect, John L. Fiedler, Jonathan B. Wight Jan 1986

A Behavioral Model Of The Medical Offset Effect, John L. Fiedler, Jonathan B. Wight

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

Persons who suffer from mental illness consume a disproportionate—and some maintain an inappropriate—amount of general (somatic) health services. Many mental health care providers assert that the timely treatment of mental illness will generate a subsequent reduction in the use of non-mental health care. Although this alleged phenomenon—termed the medical offset effect—has been intensively studied for two decades, these efforts have not produced anything approaching a consensus concerning the very existence of the effect. Different definitions and measures of the concept, different experimental designs, different research agendas, methodologies, and statistical techniques have contributed to researchers more often than not "talking past" …

Instant Business Professors: The Case Against Retooling, Clifford J. Elliott, James C. Goodwin Jr. Jan 1986

Instant Business Professors: The Case Against Retooling, Clifford J. Elliott, James C. Goodwin Jr.

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

After a period of exploding growth, business schools are now experiencing a slowdown in the pace of enrollment. This may be the "pause that refreshes" for many schools that have been coping with crowded classes, insufficient equipment and reliance on part-time faculty. It is generally accepted that any school is only as strong as its faculty, and this key requirement is the subject of this article. In recent years, in attempts to remedy an alleged shortage of faculty, we have experienced the phenomenon of "retooling," a process whereby faculty are recruited from the liberal arts and sciences, or education, and …

Inferential Operations Research On Surface Finish Of Castings, D. C. Ekey Jan 1986

Inferential Operations Research On Surface Finish Of Castings, D. C. Ekey

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

This paper reports the result of an experiment using statistical research methodology to evaluate previous findings, identify new effects and focus on potential future research efforts to improve the control of casting surface roughness.

The objective of developing a functional equation to predict casting surface roughness was achieved. A reliable and valid methodology for obtaining operational "surface imprints" of casting surface roughness was developed.

Gray iron castings within a weight range of 1 to 7000 pounds were studied. The population of 142 surface roughness measurements came from five foundries in the northeast regions of Pennsylvania, Vermont, Maine, and Massachusetts. The …

Accounting Historians Journal

Reading and assessing a large number of manuscripts, essays, papers and dissertations over a considerable number of years, I have formed a few notions of what I regard as their desirable and undesirable features. These I offer here in the hope that they may help authors to attract the goodwill and gratitude of the editors to whom they submit their efforts.

Classical Model Of Control In The Accounting Literature, Lee D. Parker Jan 1986

Classical Model Of Control In The Accounting Literature, Lee D. Parker

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper outlines a classical management model of control based upon concepts identified in the writings of Frederick Taylor and Henry Fayol. The classical model's constituent concepts are found to be replicated in early accounting literature. The accounting model persisted right through the 1970s with only one conceptual change that reflected a concept discussed by Fayol. A number of factors which may have influenced the accounting model's replication of the classical management model are then considered. These include the linguistic derivation of the term "budget", historical approaches to budgeting by governments, the scientific and efficiency orientation of accountants in the …

Contribution To A Concept Of Behavioral Abnormality In Farm Animals Under Confinement, U. A. Luescher, J. F. Hurnik Jan 1986

Contribution To A Concept Of Behavioral Abnormality In Farm Animals Under Confinement, U. A. Luescher, J. F. Hurnik

Agribusiness Collection

Farm animals housed in close confinement often engage in activities that do not occur with animals maintained in traditional and more complex environments. Many of these activities consist of species-typical motor patterns directed towards unsuited or inappropriate objects, or performed as vacuum activities. For example, piglets fed from a trough from day 2 to day 21 after parturition display much nosing. of penmates and ear sucking (DeBoer and Hurnik 1984). Similarly, confined veal calves in crates may lick their pelage excessively, or, when housed in groups, may suck the naval area of penmates; laying hens and broilers often engage in …

The Case For Intensive Farming Of Food Animals, Stanley E. Curtis Jan 1986

The Case For Intensive Farming Of Food Animals, Stanley E. Curtis

Agribusiness Collection

Our world is still a hungry place. At the same time, the number of people worldwide who grow food for themselves continues to dwindle. Most U.S. citizens have never set foot on a farm or harvested one mouthful-let alone a lifetime's worth-of daily bread. Yet our farmlands and climates and our agricultural and food industries are this nation's ultimate resources. By increasing productivity, our farmers and the scientific and business endeavors that support our nation's food production, processing, and distribution have proved to be able and reliable husbands of these precious resources. But make no mistake: The challenge to increase …

The Case Against Intensive Farming Of Food Animals, Linda D. Mickley, Michael W. Fox Jan 1986

The Case Against Intensive Farming Of Food Animals, Linda D. Mickley, Michael W. Fox

Agribusiness Collection

The well-being of American agriculture is indeed a complex subject, fraught with interrelationships, predictions, recriminations, and at times, high emotionalism. In this paper, we will be concentrating on several aspects of the entire picture that we feel are fundamental to the issue of animal welfare in modern agriculture. First, we will take a brief look at two farm animal species maintained in very restrictive systems, that is, battery-caged laying hens and tethered and/or crated brood sows.

Next, the human costs in terms of occupational diseases and consumer health hazards will be considered. Finally, some humane alternatives to the factory systems …

Horsebreakers, Tamers, And Trainers: An Historical, Psychological, And Social Review, Sharon E. Cregier Jan 1986

Horsebreakers, Tamers, And Trainers: An Historical, Psychological, And Social Review, Sharon E. Cregier

Equines Collection

To my knowledge, there has been no organized synthesis describing the historical development of horse handling, management, lore, and training. This discussion offers, in capsule form, some of the historical, psychological, and social considerations which might be taken into account when evaluating horse-handling skills.

First, I would like to describe the natures of the emotional and psychological bonds between man and horse. I will also look at the consequences of various types of bonding on horsemanship or management. We can increase our understanding of the role of the horse in our history and lives by thus seeing how the animal …

The Psychology And Ethics Of Humane Equine Treatment, Sharon E. Cregier Jan 1986

The Psychology And Ethics Of Humane Equine Treatment, Sharon E. Cregier

Equines Collection

The effect on animals of man-induced stressors, such as the disruption of herd bonds, stabling, medication procedures and the like, has been the subject of increasing investigation. Obvious and shocking abuses against animals, bullfighting, certain training practices in the racehorse industry, and rodeo events such as wild horse races, steerbusting or calf-roping, are readily recognized and have, in some instances been stopped. (Steerbusting refers to roping, from horseback, of running cattle in such a manner as to flip the animal backward or jerk it down, knocking the wind out of the animal and occasionally breaking ribs, vertebrae, and neck.)

However, …

As the business environment becomes more complex and more competitive, accountants and other business managers must exploit the advantages of the computer to remain competitive. Even though managers have long used data which was collected, stored, summarized, and reported using computer technology, managers have not traditionally used computers to manage. Only recently have managers realized that the computer is a cost-effective tool which can directly aid and support business decisions (i.e., not only can computers generate data to be used in making decisions, they can also make comparisons, evaluate alternatives, weigh the costs and benefits, and perhaps even make certain …
