A research analysis was conducted to distinguish the differences between contemporary corporate management and entrepreneurial management. A major difference is in the attitude, perception, and priority of the senior management and the organizational mission. Other distinguishing differences are related to individual and organizational leadership, organizational hierarchy and structure, decision-making authority, and compensation systems for employees.

Deregulation, Tax Reform, And The Use Of Consumer Credit, A Charlene Sullivan, Debra Worden Jan 1989

Deregulation, Tax Reform, And The Use Of Consumer Credit, A Charlene Sullivan, Debra Worden

Faculty Publications - College of Business

This article analyzes the probable effects of recent deregulation of consumer credit markets and tax reform on household credit-use decisions. The results of the analysis suggest that deregulation of rates of charge for consumer credit contracts accounts for a substantial portion of the increase in consumer credit outstanding relative to household income since 1982. The effect would not originate from the extention of credit in newly deregulated markets to households that had not been able to get credit before (widening of credit use). Rather, it would come from the provision of greater amounts of credit to borrowers in general (deepening …

The Effects Of An Instructor's Use Of Hesitation Forms On Student Ratings Of Quality, Recommendations To Hire, And Lecture Listening, Craig E. Johnson, Larry Vinson, Michael Hackman, Tom Hardin

Faculty Publications - College of Business

This study examined the impact of instructor use of hesitation forms ("uh," "ah," "um," and "well") in an initial encounter with the students on three measures of teaching effectiveness: students ratings of teacher quality, student recommendations to hire, and lecture listening. The instruction of any amount of hesitant speech significantly lowered instructor effectiveness as measured by each dependent variable. Generally, the use of higher frequencies of hesitation forms was more damaging than the use of lower frequencies. The findings of this study suggest that the use of other forms of powerless language may also detract from the teacher effectiveness.

Resilience And Survival: Executive Careers In Major California Nonprofit Organizations, Cathie J. Witty Jan 1989

Resilience And Survival: Executive Careers In Major California Nonprofit Organizations, Cathie J. Witty

Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Despite the increasing social involvement of nonprofit organizations in public activity, we really know very little about the education, values and career patterns of the executives who manage this nonprofit sector.

This study begins to address these issues through interviews with fifty executive directors of large California nonprofit organizations. Four types of nonprofit organizations were included in the study. Human service agencies [20] and arts organizations [17] comprise the bulk of the organizations, with foundations [10] and scientific research facilities and museums [3] completing the sample.

The study explores the personal dimensions of mobility, career choices, education and …

Organizational And Management Characteristics Of Peace Groups, Mary Anna Culleton Colwell Jan 1989

Organizational And Management Characteristics Of Peace Groups, Mary Anna Culleton Colwell

Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The contemporary American peace movement is a mixture of many small and a few large organizations pursuing a wide range of goals. There has been almost no organizational research focused on these peace movement organizations (PMOs) or detailed studies of the goals, values, and activities of a large sample of PMOs.

The activity of these varied PMOs has had limited impact on public policy. Some authors cite the strength of external forces or the conservative American political culture as the key factors in this relative lack of success. There are few facts with which to evaluate these or …

Medieval Traders As International Change Agents: A Comparison With Twentieth Century International Accounting Firms, Larry M. Parker Jan 1989

Medieval Traders As International Change Agents: A Comparison With Twentieth Century International Accounting Firms, Larry M. Parker

Accounting Historians Journal

The International Accounting Standards Committee's (IASC) exposure draft on "Comparability of Financial Statements" has increased the awareness of the need for international changes in accounting standards. Since the IASC cannot mandate these changes, the accounting community needs to learn how to communicate, adopt and implement changes. This paper discusses an important aspect of the change process, the change agent. The first part of the paper presents an historical example of an important group of international change agents, the Jewish traders of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance. Parallels are then drawn between the Medieval Jewish traders and modern international accounting …

Irony Of The Golden Age Of Accounting Methodolgy, Tom Mouck Jan 1989

Irony Of The Golden Age Of Accounting Methodolgy, Tom Mouck

Accounting Historians Journal

Developments in accounting methodology during the 1960s are contrasted with concurrent developments in philosophy of science. The 1960s was a decade characterized by the widespread adoption of the scientific method in accounting methodology. The same decade was characterized by the degeneration of any semblance of consensus among philosophers of science regarding the nature of scientific inquiry. The irony of these incongruous but simultaneous developments is highlighted with the intent of weakening the current atmosphere of uncritical reverence for science and the scientific method in accounting research. A more contemporary (and more open) view of science : the postempiri-cist view : …

Analysis Of Corporate Culture And Community Relations: A Case Study Of Ibm, Lisa V. Sukovaty-Gordon Jan 1989

Analysis Of Corporate Culture And Community Relations: A Case Study Of Ibm, Lisa V. Sukovaty-Gordon

Graduate Research Papers

The basis for study of corporate culture grew from prior sociological and anthropological research. Etzioni (1964) found organizations which incorporate human resource technique in establishing goals were least likely to alienate their employees and were likely to produce desired responses. Etzioni's method for determining an organization's goals was through "inspection of interviews, minutes from board meetings, organization documents, division of labor, and allocation of resources (1964, p.6)." The purpose of cultures as defined by Etzioni should be to "provide a supportive setting for developing modern organizations and theme worldliness (1964, p.108-109)."

Information Technology In Youth Agencies : A Rural Perspective, Rod Underwood, Barry Sherridan Jan 1989

Information Technology In Youth Agencies : A Rural Perspective, Rod Underwood, Barry Sherridan

Research outputs pre 2011

A survey of rural youth agencies investigated current or projected applications of computer technology to agency management and service delivery. The expectations of agency administrators regarding computer usage by youth workers, the nature of training provided or considered desirable, and identification of issues critical to the applications of computer technology in rural youth: services were studied. Youth agencies generally recognised that computers have the potential to enhance the quality of service provision. The lack of formal training in the use of computers may have serious implications for future developments.

Feasibility Study And Premarket Analysis Of Sites For A Sportsmedicine Facility, Deborah Anne Hardel Jan 1989

Feasibility Study And Premarket Analysis Of Sites For A Sportsmedicine Facility, Deborah Anne Hardel

Theses

The purpose of the study was to develop criteria for determining an advantageous site for a sportsmedicine facility from among 91 municipalities in greater St. Louis. Two types of clinics, referral base and doctor-in-house, were compared to select the most appropriate type of facility for the specific site.

To facilitate data collection, greater St. Louis was divided into four regions, including the city of St. Louis as one region and three other regions formed from 90 municipalities in the county. For each community, data were gathered on median household income, median age, real estate valuation, and number of schools and …

A Study Of Productivity Levels Under Theory X And Theory Y Management Styles, Kevin R. Hranicka Jan 1989

A Study Of Productivity Levels Under Theory X And Theory Y Management Styles, Kevin R. Hranicka

Theses

This thesis will focus on management and the effect of management orientation and style upon work group productivity.

Researchers have attempted to find methods for managers to use to increase employee work output or productivity for decades. As early as the beginning of the nineteenth century industrialists were experimenting with different methods of operation and organization in the hopes of raising output levels and increasing worker satisfaction. In the last fifty years management styles and employee productivity have played an ever increasingly important role in the economy as society has continued to institutionalize its needs and its providers.

This change …

Collaborative Approaches To The Sociopolitical Environment: The Emergence Of Issues Management Alliances, Douglas R. Austrom, Lawrence J. Lad Jan 1989

Collaborative Approaches To The Sociopolitical Environment: The Emergence Of Issues Management Alliances, Douglas R. Austrom, Lawrence J. Lad

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Increasing turbulence in the sociopolitical environment is reshaping the environmental management strategies employed by business and other institutions. New expectations of the role of business in society, changing demographics, critical social problems such as spiraling health care costs, educational reform and child care, and environmental degradation are posing serious challenges to business organizations and society as a whole. Private, public, and independent sector institutions have initiated a wide variety of collaborative, multi-organizational approaches to issues management which we describe as issues management alliances (IMAs). Known by a myriad of labels such as public-private partnerships, innovating organizations, community development corporations, and …

Self-Concept Competency Of National Aeronautics And Space Administration Research And Development Managers, Mark A. Beymer Jan 1989

Self-Concept Competency Of National Aeronautics And Space Administration Research And Development Managers, Mark A. Beymer

Dissertations and Theses

Boyatzis has stated that "true" management competencies are characteristics of a manager which differentiate superior from average and below average performance. Boyatzis, however, treats a manager's self-image (self-concept) as a "threshold" rather than a "real" competency. Lafferty's research, which has measured relationships between several lifestyle (self-concept) variables and corresponding organizational behavior, has found that performance differences between average and high performing managers are associated with differences in self-concept construction. The researcher proposes to treat variations in self-concept measurements from managers as indications of their relative management competency. Thisresearch investigates seventeen hypotheses relating to the self-concepts of high performing, mid-level technical …

Novelty, Complexity, And Importance As Causal Determinants Of Industrial Buyer Behavior, Daniel H. Mcquiston Jan 1989

Novelty, Complexity, And Importance As Causal Determinants Of Industrial Buyer Behavior, Daniel H. Mcquiston

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

To successfully market their products, industrial vendors must determine who participates in an organizational purchase decision and what their influence is. Previous research has shown that participation and influence can vary across products and purchase situations. Though industrial marketing researchers would agree that there are different types of purchase situations, they would disagree on a taxonomy for describing them. The author uses past research as a point of departure and proposes a structural equations model that suggests the purchase situation attributes of novelty, complexity, and importance are causal determinants of participation and influence in an industrial purchase decision. The results …
