The Relationship Between Organizational Culture And The Practice Of Program Evaluation In Human Service Organizations, Lorraine Marais Aug 1998

The Relationship Between Organizational Culture And The Practice Of Program Evaluation In Human Service Organizations, Lorraine Marais

Dissertations

There are many obstacles for human service organizations in evaluating programs. Some of these barriers are the difficulty in defining human behavior and the change that needs to be evaluated, human service programs that take a long time to show results, agency capacity to do evaluation, and cost (Young, Hollister, Hodgkinson, & Associates, 1993). Another subtle yet powerful influence on the practice of evaluation in nonprofit organizations may be organizational culture (Schein, 1990). If an organization is going to employ self-evaluation, an organizational culture may be needed that will support such efforts. This study was designed to assess the relationship …

Developing Leadership Through Self-Empowerment, Anup K Singh Jul 1998

Developing Leadership Through Self-Empowerment, Anup K Singh

IIMB Management Review

Leadership is probably the most desirable managerial attribute but one that is seriously lacking in most organisations. While managers do a good job of maintaining and sustaining existing organisational systems, they fail to steer innovation and transformational change. Today, while the literature on the subject helps managers appreciate the dynamics of leadership, it is short on insights on how to develop oneself as an effective leader of people. Beginning with the nature of leadership and various approaches to leadership development, Anup Singh emphasises the primacy of selfempowerment and self-reprogramming in realising one's leadership potential and presents certain techniques that can …

An Empirical Analysis Of The Relationships Among Entrepreneurial Orientation, Organizational Culture And Firm Performance, Kenneth Herbert Chadwick Jul 1998

An Empirical Analysis Of The Relationships Among Entrepreneurial Orientation, Organizational Culture And Firm Performance, Kenneth Herbert Chadwick

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation was to empirically assess the entrepreneurial orientation (EO) to firm performance relationship and the potential influence of organizational culture (OC). Specifically, OC was examined as a potential predictor of the degree of EO and as a potential moderator of the EO to performance relationship. Firm performance was assessed with the weighted average performance scale and 1997 year ending return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE).

The sample frame consisted of a national sample of bank presidents. The mailing list was purchased from Thomson Financial Publishing. A self-report questionnaire was mailed to a stratified …

Factors Which Improve The Construct Validity Of Assessment Centers: A Review, Filip Lievens Jul 1998

Factors Which Improve The Construct Validity Of Assessment Centers: A Review, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article reviews 21 studies which manipulated specific variables to determine their impact on the construct validity of assessment centers. This review shows that the studies regarding the impact of different observation, evaluation, and integration procedures yielded mixed results. Conversely, dimension factors (number, conceptual distinctiveness, and transparency), assessor factors (type of assessor and type of assessor training), and exercise factors (exercise form and use of role-players) were found to moderate construct validity. On the basis of the review, practical recommendations are derived to maximize the probability that practitioners design and administer an assessment center with construct validity. Finally, new perspectives …

Consortia As Technology Innovation Management Vehicles: Toward A Framework For Success In Venture Based Public-Private Partnerships, Ralph B. Saunders Ii Jul 1998

Consortia As Technology Innovation Management Vehicles: Toward A Framework For Success In Venture Based Public-Private Partnerships, Ralph B. Saunders Ii

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to explore the approach by federal/state agencies, university, and private sector consortia to develop and manage commercialization of innovation technologies. The evaluation, support, and management of technologically based consortia has traditionally been held in the private sector. There is a somewhat mature literature guiding innovation management (Utterback 1996; Rosenberg et al. 1994; Quinn 1997, 1992) in the private sector. However, there is an increasing emergence of consortia consisting of universities, industrial/private sector entities, and government agencies joining in collaborative efforts to launch technology based initiatives. These consortia are non-traditional and the applicability of traditional …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

THOMAS MATCHIE explores a spirituality rooted in goodness, an affirmation of faith and community across the fissures which sometimes separate us, not one expressed in cults, cant, and combat boots, as revealed in four novels set in the Midwest. Professor of English at North Dakota State University in Fargo, Matchie teaches American literature, including midwestem and multicultural authors. He has published numerous articles on the Great Plains, including works by Louise Erdrich, Thomas McGrath, and Lois Hudson. Interested in political issues, he has also served in the North Dakota Senate.

Generating Needed Modernization Funds: Streamlining The Bureaucracy--Not Outsourcing And Privatizing--Is The Best Solution, Jan P. Muczyk Jul 1998

Generating Needed Modernization Funds: Streamlining The Bureaucracy--Not Outsourcing And Privatizing--Is The Best Solution, Jan P. Muczyk

Faculty Publications

The Department of Defense (DoD) budget, in real dollars, has decreased for a dozen years or so, and will likely continue to do so. Since all the funds necessary for warfighting asset modernization will not come from Congress, DoD must free up existing funds for reallocation to its modernization program. So far, much reliance has been placed on privatization and outsourcing as ways of releasing large sums of money. But it is highly unlikely that these instrumentalities are up to the task, and other sources must shoulder a large part of the load. Although eliminating duplication of mission and roles …

Comparing International Human Resource Management Practices Between Yaohan And Jusco In Hong Kong, Mei Ling, May Wong

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

The performance of Jusco and Yaohan in Hong Kong were examined and compared by exploring their international human resource management (IHRM) practices in terms of recruitment and selection, compensation, and training and development. Yaohan and Jusco employed different IHRM systems as a response to their contextual factors - history and background of the company, competitive environment and business strategy, especially the use of retail technology. The results show that the IHRM systems employed by Yaohan and Jusco affect the performance of the company which help to explain the factors contributing to Yaohan's bankruptcy and Jusco 's increasing profitability.

An Exploration Of Firm-Customer Relationships In Retail Banking, Ian Clancy Jun 1998

An Exploration Of Firm-Customer Relationships In Retail Banking, Ian Clancy

Masters

Establishing relationships with consumers as a means of overcoming the anonymous nature of many business transactions, is not a new concept. However, its implementation as a distinct direction in marketing (Relationship Marketing), is a relatively new phenomenon. Nevertheless, its focus and direction remains unclear. Indeed, it has been argued that the proliferation of relationship marketing literature and business practice has focused largely on what the firm perceives a relationship to be, while ignoring the distinct viewpoint of end consumers. This study attempts to address this by exploring genuine relationship development from the consumer’s perspective, in retail banding. It takes an …

Bridging The Gulf (New Haven, Ct), C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

Delivered at the Yale Berkeley Seminar (hosted by Berkeley Divinity School at Yale) in New Haven, CT, this speech asks how Christians might bridge the gulf between work and faith (or God and profit). Pollard posits that the link between the two is to be found in people, all of whom are made in the image of God. In this framework, the corporate firm may be construed as an institution of moral formation.

Entrepreneurship As A New Career At Midlife Or Later: A Study Of The Relationship Between The Entrepreneurial Process And Personal Characteristics/Environmental Conditions In Career Transitions To Entrepreneurship, Suzanne Palmer May 1998

Entrepreneurship As A New Career At Midlife Or Later: A Study Of The Relationship Between The Entrepreneurial Process And Personal Characteristics/Environmental Conditions In Career Transitions To Entrepreneurship, Suzanne Palmer

Student Scholarship

The topic of entrepreneurship at midlife or later was studied against a background reflecting the scope and role of entrepreneurship in the U.S., the phenomenon of downsizing/early retirement, and issues around work and aging. The goal of the project was to understand the entrepreneurial process for later life entrepreneurs, and the relationship between that process and both the personal characteristics of and the environmental conditions for individuals who become later life entrepreneurs. A literature review considered research on the psychology of the entrepreneur and the social and environmental dimensions of entrepreneurship, as well as specific types of entrepreneurs, and career …

Environmental Change And Management Staffing: An Empirical Examination Of The Electric Utilities Industry, Ram Subramanian, Carol M. Sanchez May 1998

Environmental Change And Management Staffing: An Empirical Examination Of The Electric Utilities Industry, Ram Subramanian, Carol M. Sanchez

Peer Reviewed Articles

This paper examines the relationship between environmental change, changes in competitive dynamics, and top management staffing in the electric utilities industry during the period surrounding the passage of the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct 92). The findings suggest that following the passage of the EPAct 92, competition in the electric utilities industry intensified placing greater emphasis on achieving internal, firm-level efficiencies. This external environmental change and the corresponding shift in the competitive context resulted in an adjustment in the composition of the top management coalition in these firms. The dominant coalition following the EPAct 92 consisted of older managers …

Ordinary Canadians: Identity Of Time And Place, Jim Higginson

Student Scholarship

Previous studies on national identity have centered around national identity formation by individuals because of the influence of values and preferences; social connectedness through social interactions; and values orientation of individuals and groups and their ability to change. Talking to a cross section of ordinary Canadians in their own setting about their experiences, stories and thoughts on what is happening in Canada provides an opportunity to assess their thoughts and ideas about a unique Canadian identity. The design of the research is qualitative utilizing experience-based information gathering. Oral histories were conducted with 64 ordinary Canadians from all provinces and regions, …
