The Economics Of Farm Animal Welfare, A. J. F. Webster Jan 1982

The Economics Of Farm Animal Welfare, A. J. F. Webster

Agribusiness Collection

The number of ways that one can be nice or nasty to animals are legion. This article will consider only one very specific aspect of farm animal welfare, namely, those systems of intensive animal production in which the system itself, irrespective of the quality of the stockmanship within the system, appears to restrict the normal behavior of farm animals to an unacceptable degree. The systems that were considered by the House of Commons Select Committee on Agriculure (1981) include egg production from hens in battery cages, production of veal from calves deprived of solid food and isolated in wooden crates, …

Planning For Aging Services: Implications Of Recent Amendments To The Older Americans Act (With 2019 Postscript), Roger A. Lohmann Jan 1982

Planning For Aging Services: Implications Of Recent Amendments To The Older Americans Act (With 2019 Postscript), Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The 1978 Amendments to the Older Americans Act called for the establishment of social planning, greater emphasis on the needs of the frail elderly (“those in greatest social and economic need”), the establishment of community “focal points” and “comprehensive and coordinated service delivery systems” in rural and urban communities. The amendments were implemented in the 1980 guidelines to Area Agencies on Aging. In this unpublished paper portions of which were presented at several conferences, a Guttman Scaling Technique developed in rural New York state was used to examine the development of aging services in 13 counties in North Central West …

Hsus Uncovers Cruel Puppy Mills Sep 1981

Hsus Uncovers Cruel Puppy Mills

Close Up Reports

It is estimated that puppy mills grind out more than half a million puppies every year to be sold almost exclusively in pet stores. But it is not only puppies--who, after all, escape the squalor and crowding after six or seven weeks that suffer. Of equal concern is the fate of the puppy mill breeding stock-living, breathing, feeling adult dogs-used to produce these "valuable" puppies. These dogs often are forced to spend their entire lives in cramped cages or pens, with not enough food or water and no shade from the scorching midwestern sun or shelter from the brutal winter …

Quality Assurance In Hospital Food Service, Carol Henry, Kathleen Zolber, David Abbey, Lydia Sonnenberg, Bertram Connell Jun 1981

Quality Assurance In Hospital Food Service, Carol Henry, Kathleen Zolber, David Abbey, Lydia Sonnenberg, Bertram Connell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The implementation and maintenance of standards and procedures relevant to quality nutritional service in the hospital food service department is essential to effect optimal patient care. This research was conducted to determine the extent to which selected standards (activity task functions) relevant to quality assurance were being performed by hospital food service departments. The results indicated that only 14 percent of the departments performed more than 75 percent of the activity task functions. A compliance score consisting of the number of tasks performed by each food service department indicated statistically that as the years of employment increased the compliance score …

Farm Animal Welfare: Some Opinions, Michael W. Fox Jan 1981

Farm Animal Welfare: Some Opinions, Michael W. Fox

Agribusiness Collection

The subject of farm animal welfare has evoked a wide range of responses from those involved in the livestock industry and those concerned about the humaneness of intensive husbandry farming practices. Books have been published on the subject as well as a large number of articles in professional and popular magazines. Three international symposia dealing with animal rights have been held in the last two years and a major European conference dealing with farm animal welfare and involving veterinarians, farmers, animal scientists and animal welfare groups was held in Amsterdam in 1979.

In the U.K., a governmental Farm Animal Welfare …

Productivity And Farm Animal Welfare, Michael W. Fox Jan 1981

Productivity And Farm Animal Welfare, Michael W. Fox

Agribusiness Collection

In the search for and debate over objective indices of farm animal welfare, productivity is regarded by many animal scientists and others in the livestock industry as the most reliable measure of an animal's overall well-being and adaptability. On the surface, this would seem to be so, as productivity--in terms of growth rate, milk yield, feed-conversion and egg production--can be easily quantified. However, there are serious flaws in this assumption.

A computer model has been developed to analyze alternate management strategies and energy and economic constraints. Daily production of beef animals and growing crops is simulated in response to prevailing conditions and system interactions using the GASP IV simulation language. Complete inventories of plant dry matter, animal status, production resources and economic net worth are maintained over the simulation period.

The Formulation Of A Design To Evaluate The Effects Of Training On Banks, Alison Pratt Jan 1981

The Formulation Of A Design To Evaluate The Effects Of Training On Banks, Alison Pratt

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A well-run business combines motivated, trained employees with the right work environment to produce the greatest results at the least cost. When the results (from a product or service) do not exceed costs by a sufficient margin, at least one part of the system is not operating efficiently. This problem is caused by a production deficiency, which occurs when actual performance does not match the desired performance (Herem, 1979). In order to determine the root of this problem, two areas must be examined. These areas are (a) the nature of the work environment and its organizational structure, which may prevent …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The distribution of dietary labor time was studied in two phases at a university hospital. The objectives in Phase 1 were: (1) to determine by work sampling, labor time and cost by position in twenty work functions of a hospital food service system and (2) to compare data from this study with data from a previous labor time study in the same hospital, utilizing the same Gred sampling methodology. An Assessment Dependent Upon Technology, F. Gregory Hayden Mar 1980

An Assessment Dependent Upon Technology, F. Gregory Hayden

College of Business: Faculty Publications

"Technology and Economic Dependency: An Institutional Assessment,"' by Thomas De Gregori, deserves serious consideration because it reaches to the heart of a conflict in holistic economic systems analysis and planning. The major issue in the article revolves around divergent views regarding technology. One is that technology should dominate society by being made the primary determinant of policy evaluation criteria. Another view is that technology should be treated as a system entity, albeit a powerful one, which must be evaluated along with others. De Gregori's conclusions are based on the first view.

This comment will consider five aspects of De Gregori's …
