Tensions In Aspirational Csr Communication—A Longitudinal Investigation Of Csr Reporting, Lisa Koep
Tensions In Aspirational Csr Communication—A Longitudinal Investigation Of Csr Reporting, Lisa Koep
Conference papers
A recent emergence of academic discourse within organisation and management scholarship is encouraging organisations to embrace the performative power of aspirational talk within corporate social responsibility (CSR) communication. However, there has been no empirical study to date to investigate the appropriateness of such encouragement. This paper analyses CSR reporting and underlying sensemaking processes to trace how far this academic departure from the dominant discourse of verification and standardisation is reflected and accepted within this practice. The process-focused, longitudinal study is based on a discursive analysis of Nestlé CSR reports, revealing the struggles between forward and backward facing statements, and tracing …
Catalyzing Social Innovation: Leveraging Compassion And Open Strategy In Social Entrepreneurship, Thomas Pittz, Laura T. Madden, David Mayo
Catalyzing Social Innovation: Leveraging Compassion And Open Strategy In Social Entrepreneurship, Thomas Pittz, Laura T. Madden, David Mayo
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
We implement an inductive, case study approach to explore the motivations and methods of five successful social entrepreneurs. Our findings show that founders noticed, felt, and responded to someone else’s pain, demonstrating compassion as the genesis of the business venture. Successful social innovation, however, was the result of the creation of an organization structured to include diverse stakeholder input and participation in the decision-making process. Thus, compassion motivates entrepreneurs to pursue broad gains as opposed to singular interests and enhances a willingness to incorporate others’ ideas through an open-strategy process. Our study suggests that interaction with stakeholders can impact the …
Nutritional Labelling Providing Education On Its Usage Could It Impact On Patient's Food Choice Selection For Those In The Obese Classification?, Celia Lane
Theses
A build-up of too much body fat can cause significant health risks and development of medical conditions and disabilities (National Institute Clinical Excellence (NICE), 2014). The causes of obesity involve the disproportionate intake of calories that are not utilised (World Health Organisation (WHO), 2016). The rising trend towards obesity threatens to bankrupt medical systems (Heifer and Shultz, 2014). There has been a heighten awareness from the general public in the last decade of the affiliation between health and nutrition (Irish Universities Nutrition Alliance (lUNA), 2011). In light of the ever increasing obesity trend, individuals still desire to take control of …

Indian Microfinance Sector: A Case Study, Sean P. Gillon
Indian Microfinance Sector: A Case Study, Sean P. Gillon
Honors Theses and Capstones
In developing areas of the world with very little economic structure, many activities are not monetized. In other words, money is not used to carry out these tasks because the people in these areas do not have the expendable funds required. In order to combat this problem, micro financing has become increasingly more apparent in these areas of distress. Microfinance is an economic development strategy that allows for those in need to borrow actual money in order to start a business, go to school, or even gain access to everyday living requirements. Microfinance has made tremendous strides over the years, …

(Anti)Poverty Measures Exposed, Francine J. Lipman
(Anti)Poverty Measures Exposed, Francine J. Lipman
Scholarly Works
Few economic indicators have more salience and pervasive financial impact on everyday lives in the United States than poverty measures. Nevertheless, policymakers, researchers, advocates, and legislators generally do not understand the details of poverty measure mechanics. These detailed mechanics shape and reshape poverty measures and the too often uninformed responses and remedies. This Article will build a bridge from personal portraits of families living in poverty to the resource allocations that failed them by exposing the specific detailed mechanics underlying the Census Bureau’s official (OPM) and supplemental poverty measures (SPM). Too often, when we confront the problem of poverty, the …
Is Organic Labelling Enough? Information Disclosure As Policy Instrument To Empower Consumer Choices, Jing Zhang, Lin Boldt
Is Organic Labelling Enough? Information Disclosure As Policy Instrument To Empower Consumer Choices, Jing Zhang, Lin Boldt
School of Business
Governments have been advocating for an open approach to encourage private sector disclosing relevant information in order to create more efficient market. However, it is not always clear what information are needed by consumers. Policy makers need to develop measures that help decide what information should be disclosed and whether a disclosure should be mandated. In this research, we focus on information disclosure in organic products, where consumers find the complex organic labeling hard to understand. Through two studies, we show that feed origin makes a significant difference in consumers' choice; and sellers with feed from non-USA countries would be …

Assessing The Effects Of The Smartphone As A Learning Tool On The Academic Achievement And Motivation Of High School Agriculture Students In Louisiana, Henry Eric Smith
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Perhaps the most influential device in modern society is the smartphone. Over 90% of Americans aged 18-29 own a smartphone and 74% of teenagers reported using a smartphone as their primary internet connection. Students perceived that using smartphones in the classroom aided learning. However, two-thirds of American high schools ban students from using phones in the classroom. Secondary science curriculum focuses on subjects that regard the biodiversity of plant and animal species, but disregard the student’s ability to identify species. Consequently, secondary students in general are very poor at identifying species of trees. Previous research supports the idea that advanced …

When McDonald's entered France in the 1970s, critics did not believe it would be a success. France is a country with a strong and longstanding gastronomic tradition, and it is proud and protective of its culture. In addition, the country has been known for its anti-globalization views. However, France is today the largest market for McDonald's, outside of the United States. How was McDonald's able to win over the French market and become so successful? This thesis analyses adaptations to marketing strategy that McDonald's undertook in France to better appeal to the local audience and connects these adaptations to trends …

Restaurant Management Strategies To Comply With Food Safety Regulations, Dr. Carlos Juan Calcador
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The recent economic crisis in Puerto Rico has created decreased health department fiscal capabilities, adding more responsibilities to health department officials in charge of restaurant inspections without adding more operational funds, which in turn led to less regulatory capacity. This situation instigated increased food safety regulation violations, and food safety legislation changes, imposing more economic pressure to restaurant owners, which leads to a lack of restaurant sustainability. The purpose of this case study was to explore strategies six business visionaries, smart entrepreneurs, who have positioned themselves as successful restaurateurs, in the restaurant industry in Puerto Rico. They were key factors …
