Hog Barn Density And Location In U.S. And Nebraska, Elliott James Dennis

After the war in Syria, Lebanon became among the top countries hosting for refugees. Many public health issues started to be raised with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) being high on the list. Providing health care for refugees is not easy since it requires huge resources, continuous follow-up encounters, and an extensive financial support. Reports show that NCDs are a health priority in Syrian refugees, and hypertension is the most prevalent one affecting more than half of the older Syrian refugees in Lebanon. This creates an enormous burden on the host community health system that needs effective interventions. While Lebanese citizens favor …

Governance entities that have tackled public participation for decades are now approaching more participatory democracies, throughout which citizens are directly involved in influencing decisions that matter to them. In Lebanon, young people’s disengagement from the sociopolitical realm demands a framework for youth dialogue on policy matters. In 2017, the Hariri Foundation for Sustainable Human Development designed, initiated and managed a youth-centered public participation approach in Saida, Lebanon, engaging young citizens in local research and development and empowering them to multiply their influences at the regional and national scales. This approach has been recognized on all levels as an effective methodology …

Corona Crisis And Inequality: Why Management Research Needs A Societal Turn, Hari Bapuji, Charmi Patel, Gokhan Ertug, David G. Allen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

As the world struggles to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, the stark inequalities in our societies have been laid bare, and the interplay between organizations and societies has also become evident yet again. This crisis underscores the need for management scholars to take a societal turn and examine how organizational practices interact with societal economic inequality. To illustrate this approach, we discuss organizational practices – corporate social responsibility, work design, recruitment and selection, and compensation management – that can contribute to the normalization, reinforcement, and reduction of economic inequalities in society. We conclude by calling on scholars of inequality, as …

Pretrial Justice Reform And Property Crime: Evidence From New Jersey, Jung K. Kim, Yumi Koh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Several states and localities have begun to implement various forms of pretrial justice reforms aimed at reducing the size of pretrial detainee population. However, empirical investigation of the effect of such reforms on crimes more broadly (other than recidivism) is limited. We analyse the effect of the 2017 New Jersey Criminal Justice Reform on property crimes. We find that property crime per 100,000 population increased by 22.5% within the first two years. Our findings suggest that reducing the likelihood of pretrial detention for less violent crimes can have substantial impact on behavioural incentives for offenders of such crimes.

JOHNSON CITY (Aug. 4, 2020) – When Dr. Cecilia McIntosh retires from East Tennessee State University one day, she hopes to leave “a whole chapter in the book” on plant biochemistry.

That goal is important to the researcher, but equally important is the legacy she leaves with her students – undergraduate and graduate – a legacy of critical thinking skills, hands-on and high-tech laboratory practices and a drive to keep asking, seeking, discovering and sharing.

Exhibiting a mathematical mind at an early age, McIntosh was encouraged and challenged by her grandfather, who gave her math problems to work in her …

Predictors Of Organizational Decoupling In The Context Of Corporate Sustainability, Ajith Venugopal

Management Dissertations - Archive

The gap between what firms say and what they do is referred to as organizational decoupling. Despite the fact that decoupling is a widespread phenomenon, there is a paucity of empirical studies that have examined individual level predictors of organizational decoupling, especially in the context of corporate sustainability. In this dissertation, utilizing upper echelon theory, I examine how CEO psychological charactersitics predict policy-practice decoupling in the environmental and social dimensions of corporate sustainability. Using a sample of U.S.manufacturing companies from S&P 1500 during the period 2009-2018, I test the relationship between CEO personality (FFM traits), CEO value (self-transcendence), and CEO …
