An Economic Analysis Of Contributions Under The Income Tax Laws, Floyd E. Gillis, Vernon L. Smith Jan 1958

An Economic Analysis Of Contributions Under The Income Tax Laws, Floyd E. Gillis, Vernon L. Smith

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

In this note classical tools are used to examine the treatment of "gifts in kind" under the federal income-tax laws as they were but a few years ago, as they are today, and as they should be, given the objective that the law appears to be trying to achieve. It will be demonstrated that, under certain conditions, firms today can maximize profit after taxes by producing some output to be given to acceptable charities.

The Analysis And Evaluation Of Supervisory And Managerial Personnel, Robert A. Huston Jan 1958

The Analysis And Evaluation Of Supervisory And Managerial Personnel, Robert A. Huston

Masters Theses

Introduction

The rapid growth of American industry during the first half of the Twentieth Century has brought managements face to face with the necessity to delegate responsibility and commensurate authority to the various echelons of the supervisory and managerial personnel. The owner-manager era is a thing of the past. Gone with it is the intimate relationship that once existed between the owner of the business and those who worked for him. In its place has arisen the corporation, a statutory entity that cloaked ownership with impersonality.

Coincidental with the change of character of ownership and, indeed, one of the major …

These characteristics have been enhanced by such elements as the growth of corporate enterprise, greater governmental regulations of business, and increased demands by consumers for more business services. With the increase of these complexities, the need for accurate and readily understood records is great. Therefore, the need for specialists who can understand, prepare, and interpret these records becomes more and more important. It is the function of financial accounting to give expression to these records and to make the activities of a …

Towards A Behavioral Theory Of Communication, Russell L. Ackoff Mar 1957

Towards A Behavioral Theory Of Communication, Russell L. Ackoff

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This Research Memorandum develops a formal framework for understanding information as it relates to decision-making. It introduces the concept of an individual's "purposeful state," defined by objectives, valuation of those objectives, possible courses of action, their efficiencies, and the probabilities of their selection. The study defines the amount of information in a purposeful state using the probabilities of choosing among available actions and evaluates information conveyed in a message as the change in information before and after the message. Additionally, the amount of instruction and motivation in a purposeful state is quantified, based on the efficiencies and values of actions …
